Rule One: Drink this wine close to room temperature! Cold zaps it of its flavor and considerable charm. I was skeptical of a Mendocino Gewurz but found it spicy and fairly true to the varietal's traits. You get the lychee, grapefruit, the white pepper, the floral thing. Good intensity and minerals, too. Lengthy finish and a bit of alcohol heat.

Bricked color and loads of chunky residue. Rich, deep and wide flavors – intensely powered by black, blue fruit, and prune for sure, especially on the second day. Coffee, spice, perhaps a hint of caramel. Fruit is likely on the retreat but I’d still describe it as full state. Some bright acidity and bold tannins that react well to a burger.

A crowd favorite at our Ocean Grove dinner party. Intense and dense, with some oak influence. Massive and fruit-filled, this is one to pair with your most intense of proteins. Tons of dark fruit, leveled by just enough acidity. No real notes but I wouldn't hesitate to buy again at my price ($33).

WOTN. No notes but classy and confident. We consumed this bottle on the heels of a very bold Argentine BDX blend. The restraint of the Bel Air was even more impressive in contrast, and it thoroughly charmed with its perfume, lovely balance and deliciousness factor. For the money, an extraordinarily winning wine.

Decent intensity here, layered and semi-rich. Don't think it merits the $50 price tag but a fairly opulent, moderately complex Wash. red. Yeah, not overly impressed.

Lovely spicy nose and an equally impressive intro on the palate. Rich, complex and supremely balanced. Medium acid, herbs, light menthol, all sorts of fruit (red, blue and black), spice, firm-ish tannic structure. Low level alcohol burn on the lasting finish -- one that lingers for minutes. Really, really nice WA juice.

Upon opening, a big spicy nose and noticeable oak on the palate. With some time the aromas evolve to bring out menthol and tea. I rather like the aromas. After about 30 minutes I got more fruity hints, cherry, meat. The palate doesn't evolve enough, though. A bit muddy, medium-plus tannins, spice, long finish. Perhaps not as much bogged down by oak as drained of fruit, its harsher elements taking over. There’s ample heat on the finish, too. Not a bad wine but one that plays against type and that's an unwelcome trait when it's the distinct flavor of Grencahe we seek. File under generic Cali red.

Lovely wine, again confirming the strength of 2012 Chardonnay in Southeast Pennsylvania. Acidity, vineyard rock, spicy fruit. A lean, European style that loves food. Impressive-plus.

Possibly past peak but admirable in its restraint in alcohol (13.something%) and subtlety of flavors. Unfairly matched against an intense Carter Cab Sauv at Will BYO in Philly, it skewed our judgement, but the wine's charms did emerge. More red in fruit, good acidity, earthiness.

No notes but a thrilling, concentrated wine with balance and intense flavor. Black-blue fruit, earth, some acidity, mouth-filling and wonderfully crafted. Needs an hour (minimum) of air. Drank from half bottle at Will in Philly.

Steely, stony and bracing. It’s unquestionably lean but the tongue detects traces of light residual sugar poking through in the form of lime and apple, though the notes of saline, rock and petrol cannot be denied. Rich, deep purple and plenty of nose. Full flavored, with blue- and blackberry, earth, mint/menthol, an herbal component. Lovely tannins. Bright acidity provides some balance. Good length too. This was a gift from John Behler and it takes me back to our drive by the actual Papa's Knoll, with its elderly vines.

One of the strongest vintages for Penns Woods, and it shows in this bottle. Still a bit austere and vegetal but this is serious wine built for plenty of aging. Great structure and coiled power within. Reddish fruit, menthol, light spice and fine tannins. Savory notes. Impressive cold climate red.

Creamy strawberry delight, balanced by vibrant acid, great length. Some intriguing greenness too, maybe celery. Earth. A strong showing by the Kanzler farm for sure. I could see aging another several years, but the alcohol level is concerning. There is a burn on the finish.

Love this wine. It's still drinking very well, and the $14 price still warms my heart. Vibrant and fruity, good acidity and body. Some green notes. Holds up to food without a flinch, drinks well on its own. Stelvin cap, which likely won't need to be re-employed.

Intense and concentrated. Dark, brooding fruit, earth, spice, menthol, tartness. Vegetable hints, medium tannins. Complex and brooding. A big, excellent steak wine with good length. Plenty of life left.

Mighty fine, honest Grenache that's awfully food-friendly. Rich intensity on the nose, followed by supreme balance, minerality, gentle fruit, spice, a touch of earth, length. Drinking very well now.

Classic traits of Sauv Blanc. Lush nose, flavors of grass and grapefruit, intense acid. Medium body and good intensity; medium to long finish. Kermit Lynch strikes again.

Perplexing wine. Rich oaky sweet odor says OAK before it hits the lips. Uh-oh. On the palate it’s disjointed, like it’s falling apart. Surprisingly acidic, with a bitter element that throws off the taste buds, lots of oak (probably too much), kind of over-rich. Highly extracted, it feels less Wash than Cali, and there’s a distinct alcoholic burn on the finish as the fruit fades precipitously. Glancing at the bottle, it indicates 14.8% ABV though I’d guess higher. This is no surprise judging from how poorly it’s aging. An imbalanced, disappointing pour for the money.

Fortitude is the word I think of. Petrol nose, dry with great acidity that burns through til the end. Mineral, apple and is that creaminess upon opening? White pepper spice too. Impeccable balance, a formidable Riesling.

Petrol fruit nose. Gorgeous wine with impeccable balance, part peach, citrus, some petrol and loads of rocky backing. Clean, mineral, richness. Crisp as heck.

Indulgent and thoroughly enjoyable. Extracted but not flabby, rather concentrated, chock full of blue and black fruit. Spice, tannin, light oak. Dusty and subtly acidic. No overthinking required.
