2001 Château Léoville Las CasesSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/24/2024 - Julian Marshall wrote: 92 pointsThe nose is fragrant and charming, with old rose, a little plum and red cherries. On the palate, similarly charming, very civilized and understated, with blackcurrant, a little cranberry and redcurrant, then some plums and vanilla. This could have been a bad bottle, but I found it lacked intensity and the velvety power I would expect from a LLC. On the basis of this bottle, perhaps starting to fade and I wonder if it wouldn't have been better a few years ago. Still a delicious wine, but there are better 01s and for four times less than the current price, CDM 00 is a lot better. |

2016 Bertin-Delatte Chenin Blanc L'ÉchalierVin de France more |
4/24/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 pointsStill drinking well, but I'm a bit concerned that the slightly oxidised-tasting fruit will succumb so I won't wait too much longer before opening my last bottle. For now, a very beguiling blend of bitter orange and lemon, interspersed with notes of honey, finishing crisp and dry. |

2015 Château du TaillanHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/24/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 pointsCreamy, quite dark and rich, with blackberry and dark cherry mixing with a little vanilla and coffee flavours, so borderline internationally bland, but a little acidic bite and grip midpalate bring it back onto the straight and narrow. Really rather good, if teetering on the edge of the dark side. |

2010 Château La CardonneMédoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/19/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 pointsMuch better than my last bottle, this was really rather good - soft ripe fruit, less spicy than before, well-rounded and charming, whilst sturdy enough to warrant more cellaring as it may even get better. |

2016 Clos du MarquisSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/19/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 94 pointsNotes of strawberry and coffee amidst the blackcurrant aromas, with hints of spices and forest fruits. The attack is smooth, effortlessly charming, with pure blackcurrant fruit and waves of strawberry and plum, then already a middle section featuring dark cherry and vanilla, before a long, rising finish dominated by juicy blackberry, with silky tannins keeping it all in check. Delicious. |

2016 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron Les Griffons de Pichon BaronPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/19/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 pointsClassic Pauillac aromas of pencil shavings and cassis, plus a little black pepper and blackberry, then a very silky mouthful of blackcurrant and blackberry, typically Pichon Baron in the way it's composed, a little oak but fairly unobtrusive, plus some rounded but lingering tannins on the finish. Approachable now with a long decant but promising much more in the future. Plenty of core energy to the fruit but well-balanced and not remotely overdone. Still a work in progress but great potential. Very impressive. |

2014 Château CitranHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/15/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 pointsMuch better than the last one, this was an interesting wine to compare with the 09. Very crisp and acidic, with bright red fruit and leather on the nose, then a very fresh, biting attack, smoothing out midpalate to reveal some cool but quite rich blackcurrant, then some dark cherry on the finale. Good stuff. The 09 has more body, more fruit and tastes riper, but this is the one I came back to most. |

2009 Château CitranHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/15/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 pointsStill going strong, in fact very fresh still, with perhaps a little too much lush blackberry, but with enough crisp blackcurrant on the finish to keep it from becoming syrupy. Many years left. |

2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos GuillotCabernet Franc more |
4/12/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 pointsLike the 08, very fresh and acidic, with sappy fruit and perhaps a more floral nose. The fruit is a blend of red cherry and redcurrant, very appealing but at this stage, just lacking a little charm compared to the 08. |

2008 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos GuillotCabernet Franc more |
4/12/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 pointsVery bright, fresh and vibrant still, with sappy red cherry dominating both nose and palate. Quite acidic, like Guillot often is, and the only reproach I might make is that it lacks a bit of a bass line, a bit of stuffing, but very enjoyable as it is and, surprisingly, better on this occasion than the 2010. |

2005 Château FerrièreMargaux Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/8/2024 - Julian Marshall wrote: 91 pointsNot bad - at first, very unimpressive. Five hours in the decanter changed nothing, it just tasted rather faded and past it. I considered chucking it, but recorked it and left it in the cellar for three days, after which a new wine entirely had emerged, much fresher, with at last some decent blackcurrant fruit, and a fairly long, elegant finish. Not really a match for the 2000 - it has neither the charm nor the intensity, nor, for me at least, for the 2008, but a perfectly decent bottle if you give it enough time, so it may improve further in the future. |

2015 Château D'HanteillanHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/4/2024 - Julian Marshall wrote: 85 pointsJust about serviceable, especially on the second day, but not all that good. Some mildly interesting blackcurrant notes midpalate, but surprisingly for a 2015, it tastes a little green and unripe. Hopefully time will help because there are tannins to resolve. |

2020 Château de Plaisance Anjou RoncerayChenin Blanc more |
4/1/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 pointsOrange peel and lime at first, then notes of yellow peach and lemon aromas, very mouth-watering. Like the Ogereau, a very crisp attack, but the pears are a little richer, a little more intense, albeit without a trace of sugar. The middle section focuses on bitter orange and yellow peach, with just the slightest hint of honeydew melon mixed with lemon and lime on the finish, but again, not remotely sweet. More verve than the Ogereau, no less delicious. |

2020 Domaine Ogereau Anjou Vent de SpiliteChenin Blanc more |
4/1/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 pointsPear, white peach and lemon aromas, then a hint of spring flowers, very fresh, before a crisp attack of citrus fruits, then a slightly softer wave of apples and pears, before a long, lemony finish. Although chiselled and taut, this has great finesse and elegance. It has kept the purity of the fruit whilst losing the sappiness it had a couple of years ago. This has a long life ahead of it with more complexity to come. Excellent wine. |

2006 Château Gruaud LaroseSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/31/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 pointsFresh blackberry and sandalwood on the nose, then a classic GL mouthful of gently spiced blackcurrant and blackberry. Drinking beautifully, this is a very silky, elegant example of Gruaud. No, it doesn't have the concentration and body of the very best vintages, but it does have a lot more charm and finesse than the old Cordier GLs. Much better than the mid-90s vintages plus the other "classic" 00 ones. At 40 euros, this was excellent value. And a civilized 13% ABV. |

2008 Château Sociando-MalletHaut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/27/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 pointsOnce again, much improvement from the 08, which has defied my initial expectations. It won't quite hit the heights of the 01, I think, but it's better than the 02, 04 or 06 and arguably better than the 03. It has taken on depth and body over the years, which is weird, but above all a certain Pauillac-like gravitas, with cassis and cedar notes on the nose and a moderate dose of cassis in the mouth, whilst remaining true to the SM tradition of a slight mintiness to the finish. |

2015 Famille Bouey Médoc Château Maison BlancheRed Bordeaux Blend more |
3/22/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 89 pointsGood stuff - ripe red berries but balanced by some fresh blackberry mid-palate which ensures it stays away from anything syrupy, and an interesting savoury note to the finish. Not the best CB ever, but for 7 euros, excellent value. |

2022 Domaine de la Taille aux Loups Montlouis-sur-Loire Clos de MosnyChenin Blanc more |
3/17/2024 - Julian Marshall wrote: 90 pointsMy first white Blot for several years. My Loire Chenin education began with these wines in the mid-90s and there's no denying the sterling pioneer work of Jacky Blot, who alongside François Chidaine, completely rehabilitated Montlouis. But since then, others have emerged and I sort of lost interest so I was curious to try a recent one. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

2018 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon La Croix BoisséeCabernet Franc more |
3/13/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 94 pointsMuch less pong than the 2017, the initial nose was almost clean, but it still improved after a few hours, becoming very persistent and perfumed, full of sweet peas and raspberries. On the palate, it has gone back into its shell compared to the last bottle tried in 2021, but is still very impressive - concentrated and intense red fruits, mostly rose hip and wild strawberry this time. A lovely wine in need of time. |

2017 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon La Croix BoisséeCabernet Franc more |
3/13/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 pointsA Baudry wouldn't be a Baudry without a strong smell of manure and this one had plenty! I'm not sure it's a badge of honour, but it's certainly a characteristic. Anyway, as usual a couple of hours in the decanter got rid of the pong, leaving bright notes of red cherry, redcurrant and herbs. On the palate, I was relieved to taste proper fruit, rather than the savoury variety, loads of wild strawberry and red cherry. At the moment, it doesn't have the complexity it will have in the future, but it does have a beautifully silky texture and subtlety to the fruit. Very enjoyable indeed. |

2014 Château d'ArmailhacPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/7/2024 - Julian Marshall wrote: 90 pointsIt’s not bad, but not as good as most of the other 2014s I tried. The nose is classic Pauillac and very promising, but in the mouth, despite the pleasingly classic but restrained cassis, it’s lacking in depth, a little lean, with a slightly drying finish for now. It could do with a little more plumpness and oomph. But for 27 euros, it was a good buy so no complaints. |

3/4/2024 - Julian Marshall wrote: 89 pointsUnlike other 2014s tasted last week, this was quite backward and unyielding, with prominent and quite harsh tannins. Nevertheless, there was a fine silky quality to the fruit, which should dominate the tannins in a few more years. Overall, I was not impressed enough to buy more - it reminded me too much of the 08, which is not their best. Hopefully it'll improve. |

2014 Château Haut-Bages LibéralPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/4/2024 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 pointsUnless you only like the riper, more robust type of wines, this is a wine for everybody. The nose, like the palate, leans more towards red fruits than black fruits, which is surprising for a Pauillac but not for HBL. Quite attractive aromas and tastes of red cherry and redcurrant, with some more usual blackcurrant. Medium-bodied, decent acidity, fruity but not OTT, well-balanced and definitely promising. A better version of the 2001. |
