1998 Château Lynch-Moussas

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

Should have been drunk several years ago, but still quite silky and not without style, although essentially insipid and with bland fruit

Heady and almost a touch of the syrupy, but there's enough body to cope with the high octane flavours of the vintage. Excellent value

2011 Château Larose-Trintaudon

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/22/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 88 points

As usual, a good, solid performance, with typical elegance and finesse. The fruit veers from blackberry to red cherry, with a little kirsch flavour on top. It's a little thin and high-pitched, but I'm quibbling. Probably better in another year but not for the long haul.

2001 Château Dauzac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/19/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

Much better than the last bottle, this was splendid, with sweet scents of cherry and violet and a mouthful of jammified fruit, offset by Margaux elegance and a crisp finish. No sign of decay, this tasted fresh and vibrant.

Very fragrant with strong, clear aromas of raspberry and blackcurrant. Much the same in the mouth, very fruity and refreshing. No great complexity but a good drink.

2005 Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Pays de l'Hérault

Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/11/2015 - Julian Marshall Does not like this wine: 82 points

Better than last year's but still a surprisingly weak effort. The red cherry is quite appealing, but there's no complexity and really no prospect of any in the future. One-dimensional, good for uncritical quaffing, but this sells for a fairly high price, so serviceable, but there are better wines for far less.

2003 Château Camensac

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/11/2015 - Julian Marshall wrote: 83 points

Better than the last bottle, it even began quite well, with reasonably fresh tastes of spicy blackberry, so my taste-buds perked up in anticipation of a nice surprise, but sadly this wasn't to be. The middle section tails off into a short, dry finish. I suppose for 10€ there are worse bottles and we did at least finish it, but not with any great pleasure.

2009 Château Lieujean

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

5/3/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 87 points

Slightly more mature than last August, but should be better in another year. Promising, I like the feel of the blackcurrant, which is full of zeal and zest, but the lack of a backbone will become problematic so not for the long haul.

Not bad, Cru Bourgeois standard, but I expected better. It does have the feel of LB but in a rather diluted way.

1996 Château Brane-Cantenac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/28/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 96 points

Whoever said that modern Bordeaux couldn't age well? Admittedly this isn't exactly a typical example, in that it could hardly be less classic in style and structure. The last time I tried one was in 2013 and like its predecessors, the bottle was still suffering from a harsh, cold tannic streak which brought back vague memories of various 1975s, so I wondered whether or not it would ever come good.

It has. The bouquet is still rich and creamy with notes of blackcurrants and blackberries, offset by cedar. The attack is similarly sweet and inviting, with a fresh, rounded feel to the mid-section but the finish is now silky, long and elegant. Immensely satisfying and pleasurable, a Margaux at the peak of its powers, an outstanding wine. Even better than the 98 I tasted recently, this is certainly the best mature Brane I've had since the 83.

Of course the only problem is the patience needed...sadly my last bottle from a case.

2005 Château Les Gravières

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/19/2015 - Julian Marshall wrote: 86 points

Not bad but I wasn't over-impressed. Tannic at first, which I expected, thankfully not too much oak, but there isn't the depth of fruit I had hoped for. Maybe it'll come out of its shell in another two years.

2002 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/19/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 points

Another vastly underrated 2002. Classic Pauillac aromas of cigar box, cedar, cassis and lead pencil, classic Pauillac tastes of cassis, plum and violet, very suave and velvety, with a long, satisfying finish. This will probably improve further over the next two or three years and hold for another decade.

Still enjoyable but this was much better a few years ago. There is an agreeable freshness to the finish, but the fruit is starting to get a bit tart and thin.

2005 Domaine de Montcalmes Coteaux du Languedoc Rouge

Red Rhone Blend more

4/12/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 87 points

Very good but still something of a disappointment, since I was expecting further development since my last bottle two years ago. The fruit is fine, but the intensity has gone - it needs finishing before it completely dries out.

2006 Château Tour du Haut-Moulin

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/7/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 88 points

This has developed well since I last tried one two years ago. The aromas and flavours are much the same, but the rusticity is less evident and the wine has acquired a certain sheen. It hasn't quite got the fruit and depth to compare with other vintages, but this is still a good example of La Tour DHM and at 5€, I'm more than satisfied.

1989 Couly-Dutheil Chinon Clos de l'Olive

Cabernet Franc more

4/4/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 95 points

My first bottle of Clos de L'Olive and my first Chinon 1989. It's a remarkable wine. Very sweet cherry aromas, with a minty feel, then a hint of liquorice and earth. Good colour, only just bricking at the edges. Immediately seductive, a rich but subtle attack of cherry, then waves of raspberry, strawberry and blackcurrant, with a long, persistent finish. I love the way it caresses the palate, oozing around the mouth, bending around the tongue, all with exquisite elegance. Plenty of life left, at least another decade. The best wine this year

2011 Domaine de Fabrègues Coteaux du Languedoc Le Domaine

Red Blend more

4/1/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 89 points

Excellent QPR at 6€. Juicy, with red berry fruits at first, then a startling wave of intense blackcurrant that tingles the tongue before finishing at the top of the palate. The finish is well-rounded, with an almost mineral touch to it. Well balanced, not overdone, very impressive at this price level.

2000 Château Larcis Ducasse

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/30/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 89 points

Not quite the necessary concentration for a top rating but very enjoyable. Dark cherry and herbs on nose and palate, with a second wave of plum and raspberry, then a quite persistent finish. Ripe but not OTT, without any invasive wood.

2003 Château Fougas Maldoror

Côtes de Bourg Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/26/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

This has turned out surprisingly well. I enjoyed the last bottle three years ago but wasn't expecting much of this one. Fresh, quite vibrant notes of redcurrant and cherries, with a well endowed mouthful of the same, but what is striking is the strong second wave of citrus fruit that gives it lift and poise. Good finish too, so very satisfying. It shows no sign of dropping off the cliff so it could improve further.

2000 Château Chasse-Spleen

Moulis en Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/23/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 89 points

Starts off very well, after a rich, fragrant nose of brambly fruit and redcurrant, with a decent dollop of ripe blackberry and cassis, but the middle section is a bit compact and the finish is short. Very enjoyable, but it doesn't quite have the requisite depth or persistence. It should improve, this may be a bad patch, but I'm not over optimistic.

2002 Château Haut-Batailley

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/23/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 88 points

Reticent nose of blackberry and plums, with a touch of cedar. The fruit is also quite reticent, but it does have plenty of suavity and quite a tight, velvet grip. Still quite tannic, a serious wine that lacks a bit of sparkle. It improved over two days and I think it could be better in another two years but not a crowd pleaser.

2001 Château Moulin Saint-Georges

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

3/16/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 points

Very impressive. Rich, dark aromas of blackcurrant, leather and spices, but also violet and cherry. Immediate sense of style and grandeur on the tongue, with rich flavours of blackberry and blackcurrant, followed by quite a deep-throated roar of red berry, but with enough lift and deftness to avoid any stodgy downsides. No oak and no chocolate - great! A modern St.Emilion without the clichés.
I prefer this to the 00.

Probably not the best vintage and certainly tasting a little over the hill, this still had bright cranberry notes on nose and palate but not much body and overall it was rather slight and under-powered. It'll be a good summer drink but no more.
