1998 Château Giscours

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

2/7/2016 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

Still going strong, with a rich seam of cranberry and red cherry amid the usual elegance and charm, full of understated persistence. No hurry, this won't improve further but should hold for a few more years.

Crap vintage, crap wine. Lean, green and bitter.

2006 Domaine Jo Pithon Savennières Roche aux Moines

Chenin Blanc more

2/6/2016 - Julian Marshall Does not like this wine: 75 points

A Savennières for 12€? I should have known better. Not premoxed exactly but a victim of malactic fermentation - nearly orange in colour, the taste bludgeoned into submission - sad, really, because you can sense the minerality struggling to emerge. Not undrinkable hence the score but rather akin to UHT milk.

2008 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses

Cabernet Franc more

2/3/2016 - Julian Marshall wrote: 90 points

Based more on potential than current drinking pleasure, but I'm quite confident and it could prove better. Chunky and full-bodied with good fruit, a touch of green pepper and still some serious tannins, this is more for tasting now than drinking - rather cloying and hard work but very impressive.

1996 Château Léoville Barton

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/30/2016 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 points

Nutty nose at first, then strong hints of dark cherry and blackcurrant. Full bodied, rich and spicy, with notes of Xmas cake and black cherry jam, but very prominent tannins which suggest this needs a little longer still. Very impressive nonetheless and probably destined for greater pleasure in another three years. Sleek and classy.

2000 Château Daugay

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/29/2016 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

Perhaps my cellar is colder than most, because my 00 St.Emilion are holding up well. This has always been good and if anything it has improved since the last bottle in 2012. Plenty of rich flavours of plum and blackcurrant and an interesting second wave of wild strawberry giving it a complexity which was absent before. At a mere 12 euros this was an excellent buy.

2009 Château Greysac

Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/27/2016 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 86 points

Yes, this is good, very ripe and fulsome - too much for me at the moment, but if you like your wine young and juicy this is a good example at the right price. For those who prefer a little more jam and complexity another three years, maybe more, are required.

2010 Château Vray Canon Boyer

Canon-Fronsac Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/21/2016 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 86 points

Like the 2011, this is really very tasty - plummy, rounded off by good acidity, no oak and although modern in the sense that it's clean and refined, it doesn't suffer from over-extraction or peer-jealous flavour inflation, so a very good bet for weekday drinking, and it wouldn't disgrace a dinner party. Excellent value.

1/17/2016 - Julian Marshall wrote: 90 points

Again, this is a reflection of others' tastes rather than my own, but I can see this acquiring the finesse I prefer in another two or three years.

2002 Clos Fourtet

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/16/2016 - Julian Marshall wrote: 82 points

Took a while to open but rather disappointing in that the fruit, while still exuberant doesn't have enough depth or follow through to back it up, so overall not successful.

2008 Château de la Dauphine

Fronsac Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/11/2016 - Julian Marshall Does not like this wine: 70 points

Well, my mother-in-law liked this so at least my last bottle went to a good cause. Perhaps the quality of the company helped put things in perspective because it didn't taste quite as appalling as the last two. Not a wine I would take to a desert island.

2008 Château Cantemerle

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/10/2016 - Julian Marshall wrote: NR

I can't note this until I try it again because this didn't taste like a Cantemerle. Quite concentrated, but tasting more of leather than fruit, not a very pleasant experience.

Still very good indeed but not quite as stellar as in 2014. All the components are there but there is a hint of drying out, so to be tried again soon.

2000 Château Croizet-Bages

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/4/2016 - Julian Marshall wrote: 86 points

After the last two this was almost a nice surprise. Less green pepper and a modicum of fruit, with decent body and length. It will never deliver the promise it showed a decade ago, but it is quite enjoyable. I wouldn't wait too long, though.

2001 Château Gruaud Larose

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/1/2016 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 points

Perfect for NY Eve. Opened in the morning, it was just right by the evening. Perhaps slightly better than the last bottle, but definitely in its prime. Good blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, with a touch of leather and spice, not quite the intensity of a top vintage, but not far off. Hints of bitterness but nothing too obtrusive and deliciously smooth and long. Good for another few years.

2000 Château du Tertre

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/27/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 points

Not quite as good as the last one, mainly due to a streak of yeasty flavours which detract from the fruit, but still a very good du Tertre.

2004 Château Lafon-Rochet

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/27/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 90 points

Much like the last one, a decent bottle with good notes of cherry and blackcurrant, but lacking in depth and persistence. Just doesn't quite have that wow factor and I can't see how it could acquire it in the future, but it will provide good, solid drinking for several more years, probably at its best in another two.

2007 Château Tour du Haut-Moulin

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend more

Plenty of middleweight charm, with more redcurrant than usual, quite dusty tannins but they're still there, so not quite ready yet. Very good at the price.

2002 Château Brane-Cantenac

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/20/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 89 points

Perfectly acceptable as long as you don't expect too much, this is along the same lines as Giscours 02, unusually centred on cranberry flavours without the usual lift and elegance. Quite juicy and youthful, so it may improve a little, but several components are lacking compared to the 98 and 99 for example, much better at the same price.

2001 Château La Dominique

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/13/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 93 points

Very expressive nose, with raspberry and wild strawberry very apparent, leading into a fresh, winsome mouthful of the same, very well-rounded and unctuous. Not a trace of oak, not over-cooked or overripe, with a lingering finish. Excellent, infinitely better than the 98. Probably good for another five years, well worth finding. The best since the 1990, by a long way.

2003 Château Serilhan

St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/10/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 91 points

Very impressive, this is bright, juicy and fresh, already a surprise from 03 even if this is a St.Estephe. Still quite primary fruit, with loads of blackberry and wild strawberry flavours, not the slightest hint of burnt fruit or dried raisins. The finish is long and lingering, so for the price paid quite excellent value - like a good Ormes de Pez at half the price and not far off in quality from Haut-Marbuzet. It will probably improve further.

2003 Château du Glana

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

11/29/2015 - Julian Marshall Likes this wine: 92 points

This just gets better and better. In the two years since the last bottle, it has taken on depth and more surprisingly, freshness, losing the slightly burnt and pinched taste that mars so many other 03s. It's now of CC standard, much better than expected. No hurry, this will last for several years and perhaps improve further.
