A little too tart, a little too thin for my tastes. Not how I usually feel about MacPhail's rosé.

There were 2 magnums in our LWS, we were buying one when our wine guy said that he thought something was wrong with one of the bottles and wanted to make sure we were getting the good one, then he said 'Just take this one too and see what you think'. We could see that bottle was definitely darker in color.. and when we opened it, there was definitely something wrong with it. Dark gold in color and completely pre-moxed. Phew! We opened the '08 Grand Cru for comparison and had a mini wine tasting lesson on Mother's Day. 'This is what it should taste like, this is what it shouldn't taste like'

Well - this is a beauty. Plush, but not overbearing, rich and full, but balanced. Dark fruits, ripe blackberries and currants, tannins are present but silky, and the acidity keeps it all from being flat and boring. Decanted and drank over the evening (I had a glass before everyone else - oink!), this was the favorite of the evening. If I found more of this, I wouldn't hesitate to pounce on it.

When first opened and decanted (I thought there might be sediment but there was only a touch), I thought perhaps it was over the hill; by the end of the night - I thought 'Nope, it's just getting going now'. It's quiet, not in your face; and really nice. Fruit was muted at first but later it was brighter and there was quite a bit of cherry, along with the earthy flavors of the woods on a damp spring day. Ready to drink now or hold a little longer.

Wow. This is still just a baby. Decanted the first evening for 5 hours - and could have decanted longer (3 hours more the next evening!). Dark fruits, black raspberry, currant, cassis, vanilla and cedar on the nose, with those dark fruits on the palate as well. It's still a bit tannic (hence the long decant), but it's lovely all the same. Very lush.

Very approachable even at such a young age - very pretty floral/earthy mushroom nose (very much a MacPhail scent), balanced and supple with red fruits.

Opened with a bit of trouble because of some wine seepage between cork and bottle. Used a screen as transferred into decanter. Decanted for about two and half hours. Was a little concerned that the wine might have been tired and well over the hill, after reading some tasting notes. I am happy to report it delivered on every level. Still plenty of fruit with smooth tannins - really a lovely 35 year old wine!

Lemon oil/wax, citrus, candied lime peel
Rich, heavy bodied
Lemon honey
Saline/salinity
Nicely balanced with fruit and acidity
First sip was a bit too warm and the wine was still really, really good, but a bit of chill brought out the acidity making it even better - makes the oak show more too - the vanilla butterscotch is coming through

Licorice Necco wafers (not everyone's favorite, but I like them)
Soft powdery floral, spice... What is it... Clove or Allspice <rummaging through the spice drawer>, I can't decide.
A bit thin in body to my surprise
A bit tart with acid, but evens out with the fruit
Hot with alcohol - sinuses say ow,
Grippy tannins
I probably wouldn't purchase this again - there are better zins imho

One nice thing about having a cellar is having more than one bottle of a particular wine. Today - our first bottle of this was corked. So, I trotted downstairs to get the other - and - shazaam! Here was a very nice cabernet. It's still tight and I think could use further aging. Definite notes of blackberry/currant with a bit of oak. Tannins are still drying and a bit rough.

Decanted for an hour - for me this is a shy, mousey wallflower of a wine. Some chocolate and tobacco, currants, some minerality and a hint of musty-ness. Light in body, with very little tannins, the acid is fine. A little disappointing compared to the last Bordeaux we had (which I shouldn't do - different year, different chateau, different appellation), too delicate and fading away, a bit too little of everything i like in Bordeaux.

First bottle - pop and pour - something was not right. Nose was odd and chemically, fruit was muted, and it didn't taste *right*, not like a typical Quintessa (and as it's a favorite of mine, I think I know what is 'typical' to me). I opened a second bottle and while the nose is a bit strange-ish, the fruit is there, and - thank goodness - it tastes so much better. My take-away is that I should drink the remaining '04s sooner rather than later and move onto the '05s.

PnP - a bit woody, still a bit hot with the alcohol poking out - so slightly out of balance. That said - it's pretty damn good. It's rich with black fruits but not over the top, tannins are evident. Acid is low though. Last bottle, not sorry I drank it, but not sure I'd make an effort to re-purchase.

From a magnum - gorgeous nose of spice and forest floor - rich with that spice, and it carries on in the mouth with cherry/cranberry (but not super tart or super ripe). The balance is excellent - the acidity and fruit were perfect - with a long finish.
This is a beautiful and elegant wine. Truly delicious.

An elegant wine, with fresh cherry, rich dark fruits (not sure which ones), and a long finish that really lingers. I did pick up a bit too much oak on the finish for my taste - but over all I really enjoyed this bottle. I think they're getting better with time.

Even with a long (over an evening) decant, this is really tannic - very structured. Lovely fruit is still showing it's just getting run over by those tannins. For me this means I have to leave the remaining bottles alone for at least 2 more years... and the magnum alone for - uh - a lot longer.

PnP, big nose with quite a bit of barnyard at first - after an hour or so, it blew off. Big cab, lots of dark fruit (currant and blackberry), tannins are still going strong, lots of life yet to go in this wine. We finished the entire bottle with lamb meatballs in a swiss chard stew. Glad I have a few more!
