1993 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford

more

Nicely aged with great balance. 12.5% alcohol - compared with same producer reserve 07 BV2 at 15.5%. While the 07 had huge fruit by comparison the 93 was perhaps the better made wine that expressed Rutherford terroir well and it stood the test of time.

Too young. Very crisp and mineral driven but not intriguing at this stage. Has potential.

Solid effort. Slight heat on finish but overall nicely balanced. A little more acidic and lighter weight than Peay's Estate bottling (tried side by side).

2005 Newton Chardonnay Unfiltered

Napa Valley more

Wow. This is a huge Chardonnay. It has aged well and does have some oxidation. The front palette still displays freshness but the incredibly long finish brings out some of the oxidization and carmel notes. It is close to dessert like in weight. The complexity and range of flavors is amazing - highly suggest drinking over a couple of hours to see how the wine evolves. Clearly this is not for everyone but it is one of the most interesting examples of aged California Chard I've ever had (IMO better than Ridge and Kistler). I would drink now as there is still ample freshness to balance the oxidization.

2012 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley

more

From half bottle. Even from half bottle, I think this needs another 1-2 years to reach full potential. This is a heavier darker pinot and a solid effort. The wine displayed a little heat on the finish that distract from this otherwise very enjoyable pinot - it was a warmer year. I think this has the potential to gain another point or two if it comes together a little more. ME wines are always good but IMO the pricing is starting to climb a little north of the value for the basic bottles. 2013 saw a price increase.

Needs time in bottle. At least two to three years and then has the potential to be a 90 point wine. Lots of ripe fruit and bit disjointed at this stage. Recently tasted the 2002 and it came together very nicely.

This wine has evolved in the past couple of years and taken on more weight. The fruit has become more rounded and pronounced. Drinking well. Not memorable but very nice and a good value.

Outstanding. Compared to other 2007 Napa cabs this was the most balanced, also considerably lower in alcohol. Great depth of flavors with slightly more earth notes and darker fruit than the other 2 cabs we tried side by side.

2007 Hewitt Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

3/29/2015 - Anonymous Likes this wine: 92 points

Compared against a couple of other 2007 Napa cabs of similar caliber. Decanting helped open it up and release secondary notes. This seemed a little out of balance, although all the parts were there (fruit, oak, tannins, a little light on acidity) but perhaps just needs another year or two to come together. Should certainly hold up for several more years.

In comparison to the normal non-vintage Ink Grade this is much bigger and deeper. This is still a baby and easily has a couple of decades to go depending upon how you like your port. Huge fruit with some complexity - bolder than expected.

1997 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

more

3/29/2015 - Anonymous Likes this wine: 90 points

Agree with other tasting notes that this has some old world BDX notes. Two things are apparent with this wine. First, that it is well made with nice balance - far better than the Mondavi's that I've had from the 2000's. Second, the fruit from the vintage, which was ripe, shows through and continues to take center stage. This wine over its life has evolved from bright red fruit to darker sweet fruit. The tannins are still present and to a degree mouth coating. I also agree with others that this is in a nice place and while it should hold for a while longer, it is on the downward side of the slope.

2007 Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena

more

3/29/2015 - Anonymous Likes this wine: 93 points

This wine is super extracted with massive fruit. It is not for everyone but it is impressive what has been achieved with regards to the ripeness and density of the fruit. The alcohol is noticeable on the finish and this could pass off as a port. We compared it to other premium Napa 07s and finished it off next to a port - this had the most fruit of the cabs and was close to the port. It needs decanting and will show different layers of flavors. Curious how it will develop over time once the fruit calms down.

Slightly unbalanced with alcohol showing through on the finish. Suspect this may be starting to lose some of the fruit that initially covered the high alcohol. Still inky purple with lots of fruit but I would not hold too much longer. Nice wine.

This bottle was drinking nearly perfect. Decanted for about 30 minutes and then in glass for two hours with some development. Balanced and great fruit and range throughout front mid and finish. Better than other top Pinots I've had including other WS, Sea Smoke and Kosta Browne. Perhaps just a special bottle at its peak - everyone tasting agreed it was exceptional.
