2004 Chateau Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend more

7/24/2015 - sthugo Likes this wine: 90 points

Found this in a wine shop in Hawaii and being 11 years old thought I might try a bottle to see how this vintage is travelling. Medium garnet in colour, this has the usual old world aromas upon opening, wet earth and leather. The palate was light-medium weight, more medium bodied than light. Soft, smooth sweet black fruit dominate the palate with spice and raisin playing a supporting role. Quite complex in design there is enough going on here to suggest it has a few more years to show its best. Although it is drinking well currently. Good acidity with a medium finish of soft, fine grained tannins. A good but not great Musar.

For US$38 I suppose you don't expect too much for a bottle of NV Champagne. Pretty simple from start to finish. No excitement factor whatsoever. A good BBQ champagne to be splashed around without a care, but for me I think I would prefer to spend double and get a decent French Champagne that at least gives you something to remember. Pass

2009 Marc Hébrart Champagne Spécial Club 1er Cru

First 2009 vintage small grower Champagne for me and this was a very nice surprise. Plentiful small bead, citrus, lemon aromas which follow through on the palate. Do agree with Wine Sparty that as this loses it's initial fridge chill, the wine becomes fuller and brioche, bread and yeast notes become dominate on the nose and palate. However, this actually makes the wine more interesting and complex. Refreshing acidic finish which finishes a little short but this is just splitting hairs. A very good release and worth sacrificing some space in your cellar to see how this ages over the next 4-6 years. It won't be a long-lived release but it should get better.

2012 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley more

7/21/2015 - sthugo Likes this wine: 92 points

Although the 2011 is a good drink now proposition, this vintage, unlike the previous, has the stuffing to actually get better with some bottle age. A very seductive nose of dark fruit and vanilla. Glides over the palate like satin with more of the same dark fruit, supported by oak and spice. Has an extended finish of soft, grainy, fruit ladened tannins. This is well made, balanced - acidity, fruit, oak all in harmony. Although 14.5% in alcohol, you wouldn't know it. Don't get me wrong this is a heavy wine and although it is elegant in nature, describing it is an elegant wine is doing it a disservice. This is restrained power in a bottle. Remember this is a US$30 wine but for it's price point it competes well above it's weight division. Drinks well now with a good decant, but if you have the patience, 3-5 years or more in the cellar will reward. Beautiful.

This is a pretty good effort and bodes well for the 2012 vintage for cabernet in California. Medium to full bodied. Lovely up-front black fruit but not over the top. Good oak use with a nice savoury tannin backbone which suggests it could benefit with a bit of bottle age. Only negative is that the finish is a little short but has enough in it to keep you interested. For under US$20 this is good value for money. Drink one now and lay a couple down to enjoy the journey this wine has to offer. Matched with Eye Fillet.

Was introduced to this wine when we lived in London and drank a truck load of it through the English summers! However, have not had it since until discovering it at Costco in Hawaii. Love the shape of the new bottle but it you wanted to cellar some forget about it! However, who cellar's Rose anyway!! The 2014 is just how we remember it. Lovely palate of strawberry, melon and a twist of peach. Not much fruit sweetness to speak of but finishes dry. Good acidity to keep you interested. Not simple but not complex either ... nicely in the middle. Good example of the style. I know real men don't drink Rose, but maybe a few should give this a try. It might surprise!

One of my favourite year on year mid-priced Napa cabernets. Although 2011 in Napa wasn't one of the strongest vintages, this delivers above expectations. Soft, smooth, well balanced cabernet. If you had a friend who was just starting to appreciate wine, especially red wine, then this would be a good start. Not overly complex but thoroughly enjoyable. No harsh tannins to speak of. Finishes quite short but who cares! For the price, put away your notebook, grab a pizza and knock back a bottle of this. It will keep for a few years but cannot see this getting any better so why bother. Enjoy now and look forward to the 2012!

2004 Stonyridge Vineyard Larose

Waiheke Island Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/5/2015 - sthugo Likes this wine: 93 points

Decanted for 1 hour. Deep crimson core with a strip of garnet at the rim, this has a very earthy nose, with maybe liquorice and vanilla in the background ... very old world in character. The palate is full flavoured, blue cheese and dark stone fruit dominating with spice and white pepper making up the rest of the choir. Finishes long with a crescendo of fine grained, savoury tannins. Overall a very good Larose release where well cellared bottles will still improve with a few more years bottle age. Matched with eye-fillet roast.

Drunk with a seafood medley of Queensland scallops, soft shell crab and King Prawns on a crisp, sunny Saturday afternoon in Sydney. Fine, plentiful bead. Cannot believe this is already 13 years old. Super expressive nose of brioche, bread, lemon and citrus. Rich, balanced palate of green apple, pear and lemon which finishes with laser like minerality and acidity. Long finish. Still a puppy so no rush but still a pleasure to drink now.

Really like their entry level NV stuff, but this bottle was something extra-ordinary. Last tasted at the winery many years ago, it is still as fresh now as it was then. Blend of 80% chardonnay, 20% pinot noir. Beautifully balanced fruit, oak and acidity. Deep, rich, full-flavoured and incredibly complex. Long, powerful finish. If you want a champagne moment then grab a bottle of this. Drinkng well now but will last a decade or more. Spectacular!

Have to agree with steffenpelz note on this wine. For the price this 100% based chardonnay champagne punches well above it's price point. Small bead. Great structure and balance. Long acidic finish. Wonderful way to start a night with friends. Back the truck up for this one!

The initial release I believe of this label. Didn't start well with the cork breaking on opening! But managed to jimmy out with a traditional corkscrew. Fine bead. After a brief time in the glass the wine had a very savoury nose of earth and sweaty leather. Palate, continues along the same theme with still a lick of black fruit on the mid palate. Complex, clean, smooth and beautifully balanced, this is gloriousness in a glass which finishes long. A fantastic aged sparkling shiraz which should hold for a few more years but will not improve any further.

Ruby/Garnet in colour, rich (bordering jammy) bouquet of ripe blackberries, raisin and dark fruits, with a touch of vanilla in the background. Palate envelopes the tongue with plenty of savoury dark fruit, spice and gamey/earthy undertones. Balanced, riding that fine line between finesse and power with style. Long, long finish of dusty, fine grained tannins. Drinking great now with a decent decant, or will do just fine with another 3-5 years of bottle age. Save for a special occasion!

Medium ruby in colour, aromas of dark fruit and vanilla. Medium to Full bodied with plenty of heavy ripe, rich fruit which coats the mouth. Definitely not elegant in style but more of a powerhouse. Big finish of savoury, silky tannins. Enjoyable now with a decent decant and a BBQ beast of some description, but has the legs to go for a few more years yet. Will drink the rest of my bottles over the next 5 or so years.

Beautiful sweet nose of dark fruit and spice, this deep, dark garnet/ruby coloured Napa cabernet has aged gracefully. Soft, succulent, rich and full of flavour, this is probably one of the best aged California cabernet's I have had for a while. A nice surprise. Plenty of integrated black fruits, plum, cherry and olive coat the palate. Wonderfully balanced and mature cabernet with no noticeable middle palate hole. Has a WOW factor about it without being pretentious. Long, fine grainy finish which brings a smile to your face. Don't see this one getting any better but it will hold for a few years yet. Sublime.

Deep, dark ruby in colour. Plenty of sediment crust on the inside of the bottle. Notes of spice, plum on the nose with a hint of mint in the background. This is rich and ripe, on the edge of being another jammy shiraz, but comes across as well balanced. Restrained power. Has an elegance about it that just draws you in. Long finish of dusty, dry tannins. Based on this bottle, still has a few years before it peaks. Probably not the best release from Troy but might make the top 5 releases of this label. A very good effort.

Deep ruby in colour, nuances of black-currant and vanilla are dominant on the nose. Dark fruit, plums, spice run across the tongue, a hit of acidity, culminating with a soft, fine tannic finish that has wonderful length. A beautifully balanced wine that is drinking very well right now. Not overly complex but true to it's style and a pleasure to drink. Will not get any better but well cellared bottles will hold for a few more years yet. Sealed with Cork.

Deep purple in colour and decanted for 1 hour, aromas of sweet black cherry are evident upon opening. Medium to full bodied Napa cabernet which is well balanced with plenty of dark fruit. Easy to drink but nothing to complex. A bit of a show pony, plenty up front but the finish is a bit of a disappointment. However, overall not a bad effort. A crowd pleaser/BBQ wine ... but nothing extra special. The fruit will make sure it holds for a few years but cannot see this one getting any better.

12th bottle of this and I must admit this is the best showing by far. No signs of mustiness or age on the nose for this 21 year old Clare Valley Sparkling Shiraz. Still has a plentiful small bead. Beautifully balanced on the palate, soft, creamy, rich black fruits supported with an underlying savouriness and a kiss of oak which adds to the complexity of the wine. Technically a very clean wine which finishes long and powerful. Based on this bottle we haven't seen the last of this wine, but probably has peaked but will hold for a few good years yet so no rush to drink. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Have to agree with every point given by Campbell and JO on this one!

Lots of black fruit straight away on the nose - blackberry dominant. Beautiful, bright red in colour. On first taste the word balanced comes to mind. Well crafted. Fruit, acidity and oak in harmony. Finishes dry and long with silky, sandy tannins that coat the tongue. A very good Majella cabernet which will hold for many years to come. Don't rush to drink this one but if you have to, you will not be disappointed!

Deep garnet in colour. Soft and subtle aged Super Tuscan. Fruit is fading but still a very classy, balanced wine. Drunk over 4 hours, the wine showed savoury flavours of cassis, earth, tea and leather. Definitely peaked, this won't get any better. Although a treat, for the price a bit simple and lacking complexity. A drink now proposition.

If you want a bottle of 2012 Riesling to convince you that this was a good vintage in Clare Valley, then grab a bottle of this! Wonderfully smooth and succulent, this is mind-blowing good Clare Valley Riesling. Bone dry, refreshing with a lemon/lime backbone finishing with long chalky, minerally acidic finish. GW sums it up nicely with his review on Winefront ... "just so clean and straight with its glacial freshness that it’s immediately impressive". With a drinking window till 2032 it is scary to think how good this can get!
