3/11/2006 - sthugo wrote: 85 pointsTetsuya's Super Dinner (Tetsuya's Restaurant, Sydney, Australia): Purchased this wine at the Beverly Hills Liquor Castle, Los Angeles back in 2000 from a little old man named Levi. Back then didn't know much about French wine, and still don't mind you, but Levi suggested to buy this bottle and lay it down for 5-7 years then drink. Well 6 years had gone and the occassion seemed right so this was the first red consumed during the night. Decanted for 2 hours prior to arriving at the restaurant, the colour was a dull crimson, suggesting that this wine had peaked and was approaching the downhill slopes very soon. The nose was very strange, honey, coffee, earth ... my initial thought was this was going to be another disgusting, waste of time/money Frenchie. But on the palate the wine tasted nothing like I was expecting. Although you could tell the wine was fading it still had a subtle tannic backbone, surrounded by flavours of dark fruit, mocha, and pencil shavings. Very smooth with a medium finish, this wine was probably the most different of the night, but also the most interesting. My French wine education continues! |

3/11/2006 - sthugo wrote: 90 pointsTetsuya's Super Dinner (Tetsuya's Restaurant, Sydney, Australia): Opened as an after thought back at the hotel. Top of cork was slightly stained and suggested that the bottle had been exposed to some heat during it's short life. And based upon the first bottle of this wine we had a few months back, this bottle was definitely not as good as that one. Deep purple in colour, the nose was very closed and unfortunately we didn't have anything to decant it in. But after some furious swishing in the glass the wine began to come to life with floral and black fruit aromas. The palate was rich but lacked the fruit intensity. Also the finish was a bit lacking but still the wine was very good. Very smooth and balanced this was still a great wine, but not the spectcular show I was expecting. After drinking this bottle I can now see why there are a few differing views on this wine, setting aside individual tastes, etc. |

Could still do with a few years of cellar time to gain some complexity but drinking very well now if you like that upfront sweet fruit flavour. |

3/2/2006 - sthugo wrote: 92 pointsA deep, dark very serious Barossa shiraz. Aromas of ripe dark berries and plums, this wine straight away packs a punch and gives your palate a real work out. Mouth coating and very full-bodied, this concentrated wine seriously delivers with flavours of chocolate and dark fruit. Well balanced, smoooth with fabulous length ... definitely a stand out from the 2003 vintage. Still a babe and will only get better with some bottle age. A little heat on the finish but none-the-less a pleseant surprise. Get some in your cellar if you can still find it! |

3/3/2006 - sthugo wrote: 93 pointsVery enjoyable WA cabernet. Decanted for 3 hours prior to consumption. Lots of black fruit, blackcurrant and spice on the nose and palate mixed with flavours of well handled French oak. Very smooth and drinking very well now with a medium to long finish of fine, silky tannins. A very elegant, very classy wine from a great vintage. You will not be unhappy with this wine! Glad I have a few more of these in the cellar. Drink over the next 3-6 years with confidence. |

2/22/2006 - sthugo wrote: 92 pointsAfter 2 very average bottles of the 1999 vintage of this wine, I thought I had better crack a bottle of this and see how it was going. Lots of fruity aromas on the nose with a bit of mint in the background, this wine exhibits a very fruit forward palate of ripe black fruit. Initially had a very grippy tannic finish but after 1 hour of air time this disappeared leaving a a very smooth, velvet like wine which was well balanced, and finishing with soft tannins. Definitely agree with Campbell on this wine that "you could pour this for just about anyone". No worries with this vintage. Drinking well now but should have a long life in front of it. |

Showing age on the palate, no fruit ... come to think of it not much of anything stood out, this wine is past it's prime. The wine got worse with more air and my wife commented it smelt and tasted like vomit! YUMMO. The rest was poured down the sink. If you have any of this vintage left I suggest you crack a bottle soon to see how yours are travelling ... hopefully better than my last couple of bottles. |

2/19/2006 - sthugo wrote: 90 pointsMedium bodied, very fragrant shiraz with a definite fruit theme. The palate has plenty of up-front fruit that finishes with persistent, sandy tannins. Great oak use. Great mid priced Barossa shiraz from the much talked up 2004 vintage. Definitely worth some room in your cellar as this will improve once it fully integrates and softens. |

2/17/2006 - sthugo wrote: 94 pointsFirst bottle of this vintage for quiet some time. Deep red in colour this wine straight away gave off aromas of berry fruit and chocolate, followed by some undertones of mint and leaf. The palate was a delight, lots of rich, sweet, creamy black fruit offset by some good handling of oak and a well-rounded attack of acid. Concludes with a medium length finish of soft, silky tannins. Unmistakably Cabernet, and very Coonawarra. This wine IMO is the complete package ... well balanced, medium-full bodied, smooth, elegant, well structured and has a great mouth feel to boot, and refreshingly only 13.5% alcohol. Has probably peaked but has many years ahead of it. The 1991 and 1994 vintages have been my favourite of this wine up until this point, but I may have to rethink that after this bottle. A very enjoyable drop of juice. Serve me this any day of the week! |

2002 Glaymond Wines Cabernet Sauvignon ASIFBarossa Valley more |
2/16/2006 - sthugo wrote: 91 pointsDeep midnight black in colour this thick, tight beast of a cabernet was very mysterious at first, deciding to stay in it's cave, lurking, hiding, waiting for the prime moment to STRIKE. And after a long, chilling wait, the monster finally stirred with fragrances of blackcurrant, olive, and cedar. The aromas continued to strengthen with more time in the glass, and like all Glaymond monsters, they need plenty of air to show their best. The full-bodied palate had ripe, juicy, up-front fruit which coated every part of the mouth, super-fine tannins and a very long finish. The only negative aspect about the wine is that it hasn't fully integrated yet, but a few years in the cellar will fix this. Although possessing a very high alcohol content, there is enough fruit here to see the journey through to the end. Definitely my pick of the 2002 Glaymond releases, and it should age very well and continue to improve over the next 3-5 years. |

2/15/2006 - sthugo wrote: 85 pointsDeep red/black colour. Inititally nothing on the nose to speak of. Very closed and tight. But after some time it began to open up with aromas of blackcurrant, eucalypt/menthol and black olives. The palate followed the same theme with flavours of blackcurrant and olive, however, for me lost some of its appeal with a very gritty, tannic finish. Even after 3 hours of air time this wine was still wound very tight. Not sure if more time in the cellar will improve this wine (?) ... I hope so otherwise this wine from a very talked up vintage will be a dud. If you are the gambling type, don't drink for at least another 3 years, otherwise sell, sell, sell! |

2002 Rockford Rod & SpurBarossa Valley Cabernet-Shiraz Blend, Red Blend more |
2/10/2006 - sthugo wrote: 92 pointsHave seen notes describing this as the best Rod and Spur yet, and after this bottle I cannot argue. Although initially I was a bit worried as the cork was totally saturated and the wine had a very funky aroma, but this blew off after it got some air. This blend of 56% Cabernet and 44% Shiraz had a deep red/crimson colour which displayed aromas of berries, menthol and oak. The palate had very good length which consisted of sweet fruit, spice, pepper, oak and ripe, silky tannins. Still very tight with a nice acid backbone. A wonderful elegant wine which is balanced and smooth. Probably could do with a few more years in the cellar but it is drinking very well now as long as you give it plenty of air-time before consumption. A very good example of a great Aussie blend. |

2/11/2006 - sthugo wrote: 91 pointsFirst bottle of a six-pack purchased at cellar door last year. For a 1997 release this was a nice surprise. Although when tasted at cellar door I thought it was good enough to buy, didn't think at the time it was up there with the 1994 and 1996 releases of this wine. However, after this bottle I must re-evaluate this release. Lots of rich fruit on the palate, plum and blackberry dominant. Not overly sweet by very full and complex with a long, drying finish. This went down really well over nibbleys on a hot Saturday afternoon. Great drinking now but definitely has another 3-4 years in it easily. |

2/5/2006 - sthugo wrote: 81 pointsAromas of blackberries, mint and herbs, the palate starts well with flavours of blackberries and herbs and a fair whack of acid, however it is wound up very tight and then there is the mid-palate hole which is about the size of the Grand Canyon. Finishes with grippy/sappy, very drying fine tannins this is probably one vintage of St Hugo to take OFF your buying list. Hopefully this is not an indication of what we can expect now from this label due to the inclusion of "Jacobs Creek" on the label. Hopefully this is just a blip on the radar due to the weak vintage and 2003 will be a welcome return to form. Hopefully ..... |

2/3/2006 - sthugo wrote: 92 pointsFirst bottle of a six-pack purchased on release. 50/50 Coonawarra blend of Cabernet and Merlot. Deep purple the wine displays aromas of strong blackcurrant, followed by nuances of chocolate, coffee, and savoury French oak. The palate is full, smooth, and balanced which is packed with blackcurrant flavour, with a strong supporting cast of oak and acid. Medium/long finish with dry/fine tannins. This wine definitely needs more time so as to soften up the ruff edges and integrate but once it does it should be a very smart wine indeed. Do not agree with Parker on this one (WA 84) as history "does" suggest this wine does improve immensely with some bottle age, and to be quite frank, the experience he talks about having with this wine must be very limited. Like most Coonawarra cabernet's, give it some time and patience and you will be handsomely rewarded. |

2/2/2006 - sthugo wrote: 97 pointsHaven't had this vintage for nearly 2 years and was the 2nd wine I bought along with me to dinner. This wine is all class and is steps above the '03 and '04 releases. Midnight black in colour, glass staining stuff, the nose displayed loads of blackberry, chocolate, vanilla, spice and oak. The palate was like drinking the finest silk money can buy, rich and smooth with no traces of the 15.5% alcohol content. Terrifically balanced, loads of sweet fruit and dark chocolate envelop the mouth coating it for a roller-coaster ride of a finish that lasts for ever. A complex wine that will age for many years to come. However, it is drinking so well right now it is hard to convince myself to put the rest away. May have to lock them up and throw away the key! In the words of RP, this truely is a "full-throttle", sensational wine that only the Barossa can produce. WOTY so far for me by a mile. |

2/2/2006 - sthugo wrote: 88 pointsThe first of 2 wines consumed at dinner during the week with a friend from Brisbane who is a self confessed Barossa Shiraz fan. The bottle was clad with so many Trophy and Gold Medal stickers that this wine had won at wine shows across the country that is was hard for my friend to work out what he was drinking. Unfortunately not decantered. Crimson in colour the nose displayed aromas of vanilla, plums, raspberry, and malty oak. The palate was thick and mouth coating with lots of ripe fruit, chocolate, coffee and malted oak latching on to every taste bud in your mouth. Although it had plenty of flavour, it just lacked something for me. Not as complex as I would have expected. Although it had a medium-long length finish I am beginning to think that this wine is no longer my perferred drinking style. |

Palate again was packed full of flavour, lots of fruit - red berries, raspberries - mixed with spice and oak. Definitely a more complex wine than the Kalleske. Great structure and balance with a medium length finish of fine tannins. Could do with a few more years in the cellar to soften up but other than that a very enjoyable wine. |

1/31/2006 - sthugo wrote: 89 pointsFirst bottle of the six-pack I bought on release. Lovely nose of jammy dark fruit, chocolate, cedar, with a touch of spice. The palate continues along fruit theme, with blackcurrant/berry and plum coming to the fore. Not as much oak as one would expect but the wine definitely isn't a fruit bomb either. Elegant, well-balanced with soft tannins and enough acid to keep it chugging along for a few more years yet. Medium length drying finish. Definitely has room to improve as it does appear a bit simple right now but should gain complexity with some bottle age. Give it a couple more years and it should be drinking quite nicely. For the price, good value for your hard earn buck. Well done Penfolds. |

As soon as I got the first whiff of this bottle I knew it was a different wine straight away. Lots more fruity aromas, blackcurrant/berry and maybe some plum as well, mint, aniseed and some oak in the background. A very lovely nose. But would the palate be the same? No let down with this bottle. Beautifully balanced, continued the sweet blackcurrant/berry theme, with a supporting cast of acid and oak finishing with long silky tannins. Drinking well now, this is still a baby and will only get better with some more time in the cellar. |

1/29/2006 - sthugo wrote: 92 pointsNot decanted. Deep red, the wine displayed very muted aromas at first but after 20 minutes in the glass it started to open up. Blackcurrant, leafy green, earthy, gamey aromas. Not at all a big wine as one would expect, but very well-balanced, smart, elegant Coonawarra cabernet that exhibits blackcurrant, leafy, herb flavours finishing with grippy/firm tannins. Although drinking ok currently IMO still needs time which is not surprising for this label. Has many years in front of it. Definitely better than JO's 87 points. |

The palate continue along this same road with rich flavours of blackberries, plums, mocha, chocolate and some well used oak in the backgorund. This is a beautifully balanced/complex wine with finishes with soft/silky tannins and plenty of length. Very Coonawarra and very, very nice .... a great example of the vintage IMO. Not sure where JO's score of 86 comes from and his drinking window (2002-05), but I'm with JH and Campbell on this one who both scored it 93+. Easily has another 5 years in it as well. |
