Hmm, interesting. A bit hot, but still poised. Big cherry fruit pokes through old leather and rotting leaves on the nose, and while the finish is a bit strict from the heat, it's still quite charming. Not bad at all. Crazy that this is 15. Neat!

1/27/2016 - Gargantua Likes this wine: NR

Was delighted when discovering this producer's pretty discombobulated, crazy wine last year. First half of this botle showed an overwhelming nose of candied pineapple with violet and a hint of garrigue. Glass residuals feel a bit more correct for Cornas; leaner, slightly peppery, and more herbal and meaty. As I moved through the bottle it got more animale. This is still showing less animale and barnyard than when I'd tasted it at the Cornas event during the Découvertes en Vallée du Rhône last year. I'll age my remaining bottles--as is proper for any 2010 Northern Rhône Syrah, I suppose. This bottle was imported via Wine Traditions (not Angel Share). I wonder just how much sulphur is in here (I'm not typically one to ponder this, but this wine begs the question to my nose at least). Leftovers on day 3 showed a bit more savory layers that were missing: age this, don't drink it now.

Lovely spritzy with crunchy mineral presence, I really liked this out the gate and much prefer it to the 2013 kabinett. Some floral baby fat but really quite poised already to my palate. Yum.

Light bodied, green bubble gum stemmy character. Nice, refreshing for a domestic red, but I have to say my experience doesn't match the hype.

This is delicious. Has me hearkening back to aged Casa de Mouraz Biotite Vinho Verde in that there's a honeyed peach aroma, but very narrow and dry on the finish with greenish chalk. Bit of candied ginger too. Quite gulpable. I wonder if this grows in a granite soil. I swear I can feel it. Producer website speaks only of flysch (sedimentary deposit) in a vague catch-all description of vineyard soils; hmmm. If only the label didn't look like some Cold War/Eastern bloc crisis.

This wine has many years left and is nowhere near over the hill; noting this as I see someone tagged this drink before 2015 max. Much riper than I expected for an 08, but not at all overly ripe in any way. Characteristic aromas of Mexican milk chocolate and cinnamon, unfiltered cider a bit; but a plump red berry fruit makes a very balanced and alluring wine. So glad I held it all these years. I should buy those 97s.

Nose is quite pleasant with lemony dough, lemongrass, and maybe something akin to styrofoam; palate disappoints a bit with a broad, undefined attack and somewhat chunky weight. Nitpicking for a champagne at this price point, however. Probably just needs time to integrate, to be fair.

1/7/2016 - Gargantua wrote: NR

This bottle is unbelievably more taut and closed than the last, but then that might make sense as these bottles are part of a recently arrived new library release shipment from the Raffault cellar via Bowler, and clearly these have not been pushed forward in time through brief moments of improper aging. The last bottle I had tried was in a friend's cellar for about 5 years...and unclear how long it had been on a shelf in a shop. Stil great, though; just less crystalline and expressive strawberry fruit.

I'm not sure if this bottle is slightly oxidized or perhaps heat damaged, but this was a really bizarre showing. Freakish nose with corn, milk, and salt in the forefront, and a palate attack that reminds me a bit of some over the hill Alsatian whites I'd had from auction many years ago, which I surmised were scarred with acetyldehyde...but the odd thing is that the glass residuals of this wine smelled of prettier, fresh Chenin fruit. I figured that's where the wine is heading, and double decanted it then let it sit in a decanter for a half hour; at first it seemed to reduce the odd aromas on the nose, but ultimately couldn't really shake it from its odd aromatic core. I have no idea what the story really is here. From Rimmerman and properly cellared, so, no reason to think heat damage, but... odd indeed.

In a better place than my last tasting, but feels quite kirsch liqueur ripe. I wonder how late they picked in 08. I'd hoped for a leaner wine in purchasing an 08; by comparison, 04 feels far less ripe and candied (and still has some tannic bite left as well!)

12/4/2015 - Gargantua Likes this wine: 89 points

Dense with burly dark fruit, but a proper acidity and a tannic bite on the finish keep it all in a lovely balance. There's an earthy character to the burly fruit, but it remains light bodied on some level in that Nuits/Gevrey sort of way. This needed a long time to unfurl and probably should have been aged 3 more years; I was curious how long it should age, as I can never find these in the US, and had a FR friend bring one back to me after falling in love with this wine at a Beaune wine bar. Becky Wasserman selection (still, I believe).

12/3/2015 - Gargantua Likes this wine: 90 points

Why is it so many folks simply don't "get" Graillot wines? It's a thing. I for one, adore them, and have gleefully noted these wines in many other winemakers' cellars (regardless of country). They are a rock-solid, benchmark Northern Rhone syrah to my mind. This bottle was lovely, showed vibrant fruit in a lithe frame with a pleasantly earthy, slightly bitter finish. I love pairing Graillot Crozes with black bean burritos (often with grilled chicken; tonight with flank steak). Sad to see the last of my Graillot vertical disappear, but I regret nothing. Need to reconstitute my Graillot library!

Lovely wine but seems like it wants time to settle into itself; still some spritz and a bit of disjointed aromatic elements, but lovely and noble, lean and refreshing. I'll bet in six months these'll be just as godly as they should. So enamoured with this producer.

Tonight's tasting confirms it; I liked this while tasting with our Martin Scott rep, and I like it finishing the bottle now. At a great, affordable price, this brings what I'm expecting from Sangiovese (dominant) blend--leather, some cherry, and a disarmingly pleasing bit of biting iron. I'll bring more of these home, for sure. No idea how this is farmed, but I like the results (at least in this vintage), and have low expectations at this price point.
