1971 Rene Schmidt Riesling Schoenenbourg

Alsace Grand Cru more

Because it was a '71 I was forcing myself to drinking it, while most others just set it aside. Its interesting, much lanolin, mineral, broad but for all that not terribly enjoyable.

5/25/2015 - Ben Christiansen wrote: NR

Well I thought it was rather fine - big, rich, Chenin-y (wooly) not as tight on the back end as the Samurs we were drinking along side it but methinks this was more fun.

First glass showed much alcohol. Second glass opened up more, and by the fourth it was in gear. So, I guess surprising to me because I thought it would be old and tired, which it wasn't. IN fact, I wanted more from it - more fruit, more power. Maybe needs more time to fully open up?

Smells like beef stew that has been over reduced.

Nose is pretty hard to take, palate is solid in the mid, finishes with black chocolate.

Chocolate, maybe showing the vintage? Bill notes that its still got a lot of life on it.

Tupungato Malbec Blend, Malbec more

5/20/2015 - Ben Christiansen wrote: NR

70% Cabernet, and 30% Malbec co-fermented. Malbec is picked a touch late, Cabernet a touch early, 20 months in oak.

Some hints of under ripe, some VA I believe.

Same vineyard site as the entry level but from a single vineyard site the ripens much later - about a month later.

Smells like a French burgundy. Like a Chorely Les Beaune or something. Bill says its Domaine Leroy like. Maybe in terms of its VA and structural components. Ok, I'll grant him that.

Concrete egg. The idea is to focus on the purity of terroir.

Has a touch of spicy but in an actual Pinot-like way. Totally confused here.

2011 Viña Fray Léon Pinot Noir Prisma

Casablanca Valley more

5/20/2015 - Ben Christiansen wrote: NR

Touch of smokeiness. Clay on grainte, a touch of oak for used French oak barrels. So I would guess the smoke is not reductive but rather the terroir of Argentina. Herb and smoke, rosemary, meaty.

Lots of limestone in the soil here. There are three main sub regions in the Unco Valley. Wal-ti-edity is the highest and that is where this is from. Picked at three different times and then put into a mix of concrete eggs and stainless steel. So with all that its supposed to be a very long term ager.

Much milder than the Prisma, which is to say a very different style.

These are the original planting of SB in Chile apparently. In '82. Clay on granite SB. Gooseberry, grapefruit, rather delicious too.

Casablanc apparently has five sub regions and this ones the SB more Melon and papaya than the NZ style.
