Beautiful, rich nose of cream, hazelnut, cherry, and brioche. The palate was gorgeous! A rich wine that conforms (in a way) to the big house champagne stereotypes but does it with a lot of class. I found the zippiness of the palate to offset the richness and creaminess very nicely. Drinking in a beautiful spot!

Intense aromatics on earth, spice, and oxidative elements. The palate was incredibly layered and complex with red fruit tones woven together with cream, minerals, and soft florals. A gorgeous rose that stands out among its peers.

Beautiful aromatics at first, but tight as a drum. Some of the cabernet franc elements were there with some earthy tones, crunchy red fruits, and floral notes. The acidity and tannins were pretty stout at this point.

Delicious wine that combined a streak of earthiness with a nicely concentrated core of red fruit. Great balance and it's easy to see that time does very good things to Jim's wines.

Lots of dark berries with some earthy/floral notes. Palate is slightly tannic and, just like my other bottles, was a lot of fun. Looking forward to aging the rest of my bottles.

Aromas of wet leaves, soft floral notes, and some red berries. Featherweight wine that has a great, earthy character to it. Lovely.

For a young syrah this has a lot of character already. Nice combination of violets, dark berries, meat, and pepper. Makes me think of what young ESJ syrah are like. Palate is clean and pure. Top-to-bottom this has everything you could want from a young syrah; a great combination of fruit, earth, meat, and florals. High hopes.

A bit more lean and restrained compared to the 2012. Had some lanolin notes on the nose with a good dose of lemon. The palate was dominated by a sweet lemon curd note with nice acidity and, overall, good balance. Not overly complex, but entirely delicious.

A very cool-fruited chardonnay. Incredibly lithe mouthfeel was rather soft and didn't have much in the way of acid. Nonetheless, I thought the flavors of pear, apple, hay, and lemons were harmonious.

Lovely aromas of tea, cherries, cranberries, earth, brambles and roses. Palate was beautiful, and at times airy. There's some tannins at work here, and it feels like this has some gravitas to last a good time. Despite the tannins, it's already a pleasure to drink. #gulp

Drinking great 4 years later. Really liked the firm mineral note throughout the wine with some sweet lemony notes overtop the rockiness. Lovely as expected.

Served blind. I thought this was a 2012 Burgundy, and chuckled a bit when the real identity was reveled. I've thought about Benetiere as a very Burgundian and this was no different. Lots of berries, floral notes, some beef broth, and spice. Combines the elegance of a Burgundy with the wildness and edginess of a young Cote Rotie. Amazing wine.

Notes of pear, brine, mineral and lemon on the nose are firm and deep. The palate was a bit surly, void of almost any fruit, but full of salty, herbal, floral components. It was probably a mistake to drink this without any food - its acid was just begging for some shellfish.

What great, young, Cote Rotie should taste like. Lots of florals, dark cherry and a mushroom/beef broth thing that gives this a rustic, old-world character. A lot of people talk about Benetiere as being a very Burgundian syrah and I can see that. The spice and mushroom components speak of places North of Cote Rotie but the floral and meat notes ground this firmly in the Northern Rhone. Lovely.

Drinks at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): Liked this quite a bit. Nice nutty, earthy, red-fruited aromas with airy but powerful. The palate was in a great place. Still retains a nice structure, with great spice notes, smokey nuts, cherries, plum, and earth. Can probably go many years.

Drinks at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): This is why I collect Northern Rhone syrah. The combination of rustic, earthy notes with concentrated fruit and great acidity. This was just about the total package in my opinion. Lots of meaty notes on the nose with exotic floral and earth tones mixed in. The palate was rich, concentrated and perfectly balanced. Lovely stuff.

Drinks at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): Brought this blind to a small dinner after decanting it for 2.5 hours. Great combination of berries, spice, florals, and earth. At this point in its evolution, it was a bit of the sweet side but I think that with some more time, there's nothing holding this back from becoming even better. But the price...

Drinks at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): A lot of 2007s of late have been in a good drinking spot, but I think this needs more time to open up. You could tell that there's really nice material here and that with 2-3 years it'll become quite nice. Right now, there's some nice berry and floral notes but not a ton more. 90 pts on potential.

Drinks at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): I wasn't down on this wine as much as my friends were. The color was nearly clear (a lot different than other vintages I've tried) but it still had a nice, funky, aromatic profile. The palate was ripe with a hair less acidity than past years. Despite its ripeness, it still had really nice balance.

Good Friday Drinks (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): Interesting aroma profile...maybe a blend of cherries, cranberries, earth, and veggies. The wine had a really nice, cool fruit profile to it. The fruit was incredibly energetic as it seemed that there might even be an electric current running through the wine. There's a lot going on in this wine and I think that with 5 years we could be faced with something even more enjoyable.
