NV Quinta da Romaneira Porto 10 Year Old Tawny

Port Blend more

When first opened this seemed like a pretty average 10 year old tawny, but with air, specifically 24 hours, this really blossomed. Classic caramel, sultana raisins, wood spice and a lively orange/lemon/lime citrus tang that really perked up the palate. Lots of depth here for its level.

This seems a bit better than previous bottles I've had in the past. Still, quite simple on the palate, where it is this mostly about ripe, crunchy red fruits. Lots of ripe strawberries and cherries. The acids are correct, keeping this crisp and balanced. The bottle was drained quickly and made for a decent, low end sparking wine.

Very light ruby in color. There are some good points here... light, elegant and shows a lot of transparency . No fancy gimmicks or heavy use of oak... very pure. However, this does seem to be a bit too evolved, with the fruit a bit oxidized. Drinkable, but only providing modest pleasure.

Similar to my previous bottles. When you want a big, bold, plump and juicy Zin, this fits the bill. Loads of blackberries, plums and spice. Decadent, yet structured. Nice pairing with a hanger steak.

Excellent showing, and perhaps a bit deeper than the 2007 version I had earlier. Red fruit, smoke, herbs and cedar. A lot of material here, but this is not heavy, but rather light on its feet. Smooth and silky.

Ripe, red-fruit driven Pinot with a bit of orange peel and cinnamon. The alcohol seems a bit more obvious than before, but this is still enjoyable given the wealth of buffering fruit. Not subtle, or complex, but fun.

(Mostly) reds at Salil's (Vernon, CT): The fruit here still seems youthful, with fresh apple, pear and peach notes. While there were no "baked fruit" notes that I sometimes get from older Rieslings, it is starting to develop a bit of that "petrol" thing. Fresh, lacy and clean, but almost too polite, with only medium acidity.

(Mostly) reds at Salil's (Vernon, CT): Beautiful wine, with a soaring bouquet of cedar, celery seed, graphite and subtle red fruit notes. This have that lovely sweetness that comes from bottle age, without seeming tired. Medium length, with a silky, slightly grippy texture that frames the finish in a crisp, cleansing manner.

(Mostly) reds at Salil's (Vernon, CT): Wine of the night, with the most expressive bouquet on the table. Explosive aromatics of violets, olive tapenade, game, iodine and earth. The palate echoed the aromas, with a plush, velvety texture. The tannins are well resolved, though I suspect this could go for a few more years without any problems. Gorgeous, complex wine that is in a great drinking spot.

(Mostly) reds at Salil's (Vernon, CT): Dark fruits, with a nutty, tree bark note. It could have been my imagination, given the region, but I also picked up some "Nebbiolo-like" notes of tar and rose petals. This improved a bit with air, and although it was an interesting wine, it never really charmed me. This could probably have used even more air.

(Mostly) reds at Salil's (Vernon, CT): A bit mute on the nose when first opened. First impressions were of a light, lifted, tart and crisp wine; almost steely. Deceptively light, however, as the middle was quite flavorful and layered. This really improved with air, gaining more plushness in the middle. Lovely notes of plums, cassis, leather and damp earth. The structure seemed to come across and more acidic than tannic, with a clean, energetic finish. A lighter styled claret, but quite enjoyable.

A monster of a wine, with dark, ripe fruit, cocoa and damp soil. A bit blocky right now with severe tannins, but this seems to have the stuffing and structure for aging. UPDATE: On day two, the tannins softens and the fruit, licorice and black pepper notes popped out. Really lovely.

A truly outstanding showing, with the lovely plumy and floral aromatics soaring from the opened bottle. This was showing so much power, drive and concentration. Quite primary, with grippy structure, but this was still immensely enjoyable to drink nonetheless. The finish was palate-staining and persistence with wonderful depth. This needs more time to gain complexity, but it will surely get better.

A bit better than my last bottle. Deep purple, with plums, pepper and spiced berries. The alcohol is well buffered by the sap and rich pulpy fruit, yet this doesn't cross into the sweet and syrupy side of things. Lingering finish with good energy and lift. Great pizza wine.

A lovely, delicate wine that might be declining, but still very enjoyable. Structure has melted away, revealing a soft, silky, dried flowered wine. Silky and smooth, with no overt oak, just a light spice note on the finish. Not a lot of fruit here, as this is almost all secondary and tertiary. A bit short, but this is lovely for those who appreciate what age does to Rioja. On day two, this was pretty much dead.

Light, simple, well balanced wine. Red fruited, with hints of herbs and earth. Decent acidity. Drinks well now and not a bad weekday wine, if a bit on the dilute side. Not much length here, but it does finish clean and precise. Overall, this isn't a bad Burgundy wine for $19.

This is really a lovely, polished, black-fruited wine with depth and structure, but the structure is so velvety and accessible. Some darkish notes of coffee, leather and damp earth. A pleasure to drink. I might let my other bottles age to see where they go. UPDATE: On day two, the structure almost melted away, leaving the wine a bit sweet and flat. Perhaps not one to age, but this was wonderful on day one. Score based on day one.

A wonderful surprise. A huge, extroverted nose of flowers, herbs, game and smoke. The palate is meaty and savory, with blood, plums and spice. The tannins are well-resolved, but there seems to be no urgent need to drink up. This appears to be at a plateau of fantastic drinkablilty. Much better than the TL Hermitage from the same vintage, which was frankly quite boring.

Another excellent showing. While it shows some wood influence (on the round, rich palate, rather than overt lumber notes), this remains precise and lively on the palate. Tangy and citric, with some melons and pears. Just a lovely, well balanced, energetic wine that is tough to tire of.
