Must keep my hands off these. Certainly pleasant now, but showing every indication of being rather special in a few years. Nimble and lively, delicious.

Rich, still showing lots of dark fruit, but with balancing structure. Lots of life left in these, just starting to mature.

Nice dark fruit nose, balanced palate. Fairly straightforward, not much nuance, but varietally correct.

This wine has gotten successively better each time I've tried it over the last five years. Popped and poured, immediately accessible and quickly blooming. I enjoyed the nose for several minutes before taking my first taste. Violets, minerals, and barnyard, wonderful. Silky, balanced and lively on the tongue. As with most well made cru Beaujolais, refreshing and an utter pleasure to drink.

Ripe and rather monolithic, lacking the nuance and secondary flavors I usually love in John Paul's wines - even entry level bottles like this. I blame the vintage.

Year in, year out, sets a standard for serious rosés. Lovely nose of sea breeze and minerals. Rich and powerful on the palate, layers of flavor with an intriguing trace of angular bitterness on the finish. I'm actually kind of conflicted about this wine: it's so damn good, yet it's almost too rich and full-bodied to provide the lightweight, casual refreshment I usually want from a rosé.

Wow, this was really, really good - absolutely prime from the first sip to the last. Brick-ish color, rich nose of dark fruit , oyster shell, and earthy spice. Resolved sweet tannins, cola, autumn leaves, smoke, black cap raspberries... the palate just won't quit. Long, seamless finish. Medium weight, balance, just beautiful.

Nice. Threw off visible sediment in the neck of the bottle and a bit in the glass. Deep garnet with a fairly wide pale rim. Dark fruits and a faintly sharp, mysterious somethingorother - wood smoke, maybe? - on the nose. Sweet and sour cherries with an earthy herbal thing across the tongue. Texturally wonderful, almost Burgundian silkiness. Exemplary Cru Beaujolais.

2009 Vincent Pinot Noir Eola - Amity Hills

more

4/20/2015 - Brix Likes this wine: NR

As always, a delightful OR Pinot at a crazy good price. Medium bodied, lots of raspberry and earthy autumnal funk. Broad clear rim, medium garnet color, wears its 14% abv lightly. After an hour or so of air, sweet tannins, bramble berry, and classic OR flavors dominate, balanced with bright acidity. Enough heft to pair well with steak au poivre. Looking forward to trying my single vineyard '09s from Vincent.

Generous, open nose of citrus and oystershell. Rather less interesting on the palate: more citrus, minerality, but unfocused. Lovely texture, though. With a couple of hours of air, flavors became muddled, leading me to believe it's time to drink up.

Although I anticipate improvement over the next ten years or so, I popped one of these to set an early baseline. Not disappointed. Tight and tannic right out of the chute, but quickly opening up to show sweet dark fruit and some nice leathery notes. Light to medium weight, a bit hot at 14% ABV, but nice balance, with plenty of structure to support further development. Leftovers on Day 2 were disjointed and harsh.

Slippery, soaked cork. First pour reveals this wine's age: burnished medium mahogany in the glass. Clear, without a trace of sediment. With a few minutes of air, a fascinating, poopy nose, traces of raspberry and sherried olives. Weird, but compelling. Equally unusual on the palate, a dose of bitter olive, some herby stuff, soy sauce, and traces of tannic structure. Evolving rapidly in the glass - noticeably different from minute to minute. Hit its peak at 30-60 minutes and declined thereafter, falling apart to become rather disjointed and tannic. Interesting wine, but definitely in decline. Drink up.

2002 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard

2/22/2015 - Brix wrote: NR

Surprisingly youthful in appearance: dark crimson-purple in the glass, no evidence of fading. A beguiling nose, but not typical – brambly, blackberry pie. Similarly young and rich on the palate, lots of dark fruit and new oak vanilla. The wine is well balanced, tasty, and will provide many more years of life, but tasted blind I would be hard pressed to identify it as an Oregon pinot. Not my style, and therefore unrated.

Medium in color, with some bricking and a burnished edge. Equally mature, and best on the nose: ripe red fruits, some herbal notes and a wee pleasant trace of barnyard. Silky and subtle on the palate, with soft tannins, moderate acidity, and a nice floral quality in addition to the fruit/herbs. Difficult to imagine this improving, but has the stuffing to hold for another year or two.

Graceful and crowd pleasing. Less oomph than a few years ago, but this wine has gained balance and a quiet charm. Rhubarb/raspberry, with mineral notes, a silky palate, and subtle, receding tannins. If this wine is a bit less compelling than it was in the past, it's still a tour de force of skillful winemaking: impeccably pure and oh so easy to drink. Yum.

In a word, delightful. Pale, pale garnet, almost amber at the rim. Reticent nose of roses and cherry. Lightweight but satisfying, with crisp acidity and a lifted tannic structure, versatile and accommodating of many light dishes. Poor man's Nebbiolo. Screaming deal at the KL store, going back for more.

2003 Soter Pinot Noir Beacon Hill

Yamhill-Carlton more

12/31/2014 - Brix wrote: 87 points

Better than I expected it to be. We opened two bottles, with similar results. Darkly colored, especially for an OR pinot, with only faint bricking at the edges of the glass. Gently herbal nose with some alcoholic heat. Powerful, still tannic, with a stemmy complexity that complements the abundant dark fruit of the warm 2003 vintage. Not my favorite Soter, but this wine hasn't fallen apart, which is a testament to his skill as a winemaker. Well stored bottles still have a few good years left.

This is a reliable and wallet-friendly choice to accompany a weeknight dinner. Clean, balanced, food-friendly. Texturally similar to Cru Beaujolais, possessing similar juiciness and lift. Light on the palate, but with a stemmy complexity that adds interest and keeps this wine from being tedious. Basic, yes - simple, no.

Wow, this is drinking very well, and surprisingly rich for the generally lean and elegant 2011 vintage. Medium garnet in the glass with a tiny arc of amber at the rim. Initial reductive odors dissipated quickly, leaving a full nose of raspberry and earth. Texturally lovely: slightly viscous and silky across the palate. Rich but balanced dark fruits, some offsetting bright cherry acidity, and complementary floral and saline notes. Nice wine, and happy to have a few more for the long haul.

Somewhat to my surprise, this wine keeps getting better. Nicely balanced, smoky dark fruit coupled with lift and acidity. Threw off a fairly heavy load of sediment in the bottle, but the wine itself is still medium garnet, with a pleasantly funky nose of barnyard, stewed fruits, and earth. Even better on Day 2.
