1993 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Aszú EssenciaFurmint Blend, Furmint more |
12/5/2023 - winesteward Likes this wine: 97 pointsExtremely dark. Viscous, syrupy. Curiously, not a great deal of aroma, but wonderful flavor. Dates, raisins, figs, Christmas pudding. Tremendous sweetness balanced by a strong, sharp acidity which makes it very easy to drink a lot. Silky smooth. Powerful enough to stand up to a dessert of lebkuchen and stollen. Lots of sediment. Beautiful wine. |

11/30/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsPop and pour. There was a difference of opinion on this wine between myself and JC. He thought it was corked. It was certainly musty but that blew off after some vigorous swirls of the glass. I find most corked wines rather flat, but this was pretty expressive. But then JC has a PhD in oenology. I would like to think I have enough experience to to figure out if a wine is corked or not; although I do admit my sensitivity is lower than others, and it was my bottle, so biases might have come into play. |

11/10/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 92 pointsHalf bottle pop and pour. Inky, opaque. Ripe berry and touches of chocolate and middle eastern spices on the nose. Rich and sweet. A bit peppery/spicy at the finish. Very attractive right out of the bottle. Quite polished. Already fairly soft. Nice acid hit at the end for freshness. Good length. Will definitely age, but already an excellent drink. |

2009 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado EneaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
9/29/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 92 pointsAnother Prado Enea with a dodgy cork. Had to use a Durand to get it out in one piece. Decanted 3 hours before dinner. A very slight brown at the edge but the core is still opaque and purple. Lovely nose - spices, lots of black pepper, and Fox's blackcurrant boiled sweets. Soft, very rich and mouth filling. Sweet, ripe berries, and a little coffee. Dried fruit (raisin and prune) comes and goes. Just enough acidity to balance the sweetness. Dryish finish and good length. Perfect wine for a hearty dish. Good to go (at least with the 3 hour decant), but still an adolescent. More hedonistic than the more classically structured '04, but still, a beautiful drink. Must buy more! |

2007 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La CrauRed Rhone Blend more |
9/5/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsHalf bottle. Much more character than the previous bottle 2 years ago. Soft, sweet, earthy, a touch stinky, and rich. A proper CDP that's probably as good as it'll get. Nice with couscous and spicy mergueze sausage. |

2003 Château GuiraudSauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend more |
8/24/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 92 pointsPretty much immortal. Rich, persistent, honey, brown sugar, baked apple. Candied orange/marmalade. Has a good deal of freshness about it making it quite easy to drink. Had no trouble at all dealing with a tarte tatin. |

NV H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Laetitia BrutChampagne Blend more |
8/24/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsMy type of champagne. Brioche, slightly oxidative, a little sweet for a Brut, but that doesn't bother me. Fleshy, commanding presence. Converted some non-champagne drinkers in the group. Great persistence of flavour. Seems like age (8 years) has really improved this. Sadly, my last bottle. Hope someone eventually imports this in Manila. |

1972 Oremus Tokaji Aszú 6 PuttonyosFurmint Blend, Furmint more |
8/9/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsVery dark, amazingly youthful - rich, viscous, marmalade, candied fruits - orange, pineapple, and mango. High acidity gives it a freshness and youthful aspect. Very much alive and will likely outlive everyone at the lunch. |

2004 Marchesi de' Frescobaldi Chianti Rùfina Riserva Castello di Nipozzano MontesodiSangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
8/9/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 92 pointsWas able to source a couple more bottles of this, which is currently my favourite Chianti. Much like my previous bottles - fully mature, although it does need a little air to soften the tannins a bit more. Beautiful sweet fruit. Drinking perfectly now and probably has room to age although I don't think it will get any better. |

2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling AusleseMosel Saar Ruwer more |
7/20/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsGreen/gold, green apple, lemon peel, baked apple, grape skins, apple skins. Medium+ weight. In terms of sweetness, closer to Spatlese than Auslese. Thoroughly enjoyable. A hint of bitterness at the long finish prepares you for the next sip. Long, long life ahead, but a great drink now. |

2004 Bodegas Muga Rioja Gran Reserva Prado EneaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
7/12/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 91 pointsBad, crumbly cork, rescued by a Durand. Extremely deep, dark, and purple for its age. Looks like the latest vintage rather than 18 years old. Nose is very attractive and complex. Ripe black berries, sweet spices, pepper, mint, hint of vanilla oak. Lots of sediment. |

7/9/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 88 pointsPretty deep red violet. Strawberry/raspberry and a touch herbal on the nose. At first, a fairly high acidity which I found unpleasant. About 45 minutes exposure to air tones that down, although it is still a bit higher than I would like. Tannins are quite strong as well, at least for a Beaujolais, anyway. Robust structure. The acidity gives the impression of slightly unripe fruit, but you can detect the sweetness at the finish. Good length. Best if left alone for another 5 to 10 years. Definitely has the stuffing to age. |

7/3/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 88 pointsPop and pour. Very dark. Lovely nose, lots of sweet red and black berries, just a touch of forest floor, and a nice mix of spices; both savoury and sweet. After all the high alcohol Beaujolais lately, nice to have one at a comparatively tame 13% alcohol. Soft and dry. Cleansing acid backbone. Respectable length. An easy drink that's pretty good right now. |

2009 Domaine Huet Vouvray Cuvée ConstanceChenin Blanc more |
6/14/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsVery sweet, peach, apricot, honey, candied pineapple. Not a lot of marmalade, though. Very fresh and balanced. Acidity makes it very fresh and easy to drink. Sweet enough to go with vanilla ice cream. Lovely stuff. |

1996 Penfolds GrangeSouth Australia Shiraz Blend, Syrah more |
6/14/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsStill young. Quite spicy, dry, needed a double decant and a couple of minutes in the glass to open up. Well balanced. A good bit of acidity to give it freshness. Nose not too expressive. Meaty, black berries. Needed a steak. You can leave this alone for another 10 years at least without any trouble. |

2015 Antinori Chianti Classico Villa Antinori RiservaChianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
6/13/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 88 pointsFrom a half bottle. Still a bit of tannin action going on. Needs maybe 20 minutes in the glass to soften it. Attractive, fruity nose. Very bright acidity - strawberry, raspberry, sour cherry. Maybe a little too much if you're just drinking and not eating. Appropriate wine for spaghetti and meatballs and pizza. Not a lot of complexity, but enjoyable with a meal. While it might have a bit of upside potential, I would rather drink it now. |

6/1/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 92 pointsVery dark, opaque. Nose and palate full of ripe black berries. Rich and fat. A bit of tannin at the finish, but hardly noticeable with food. Quite attractive. Very nice to drink now but has the stuffing to age. |

5/28/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 91 pointsViolet. Nice nose - red berries, sweet spices, and a hint of earthiness. Cherry, strawberry, raspberry. Soft, open, juicy. Refreshing acidity. Slightly peppery finish. Surprised and somewhat alarmed at the 14.5% alcohol. Certainly didn't feel like it. Pop and pour and drink now. Good summer lunch wine with a pastrami sandwich. |

4/7/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 88 pointsVery dark. Sweet spice and red berry nose. Soft, juicy, milk chocolate, and a bit of the sweet spice. A proper Beaujolais - not one trying to be Pinot Noir. Easy drink now wine. Moderate 13% alcohol helps. Nice with some barbecued Angus short plate and Mac and Cheese. |

2/14/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 88 pointsScrew cap. Still quite dark. Coffee, cocoa, black berries on the nose. Ripe and sweet on the palate. Pop and pour is fine. Very soft already. Drink it if you have it. Not a particularly interesting wine, but can't really fault it either. Good length. |

2/12/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 92 pointsInky purple. Needs at least 30 minutes in the glass to open up. Meaty, earthy, mostly black berries. Medium+ weight. Ripe fruit. Aside from the black fruits, there's some strawberry and cherry as well. The meaty and earthy qualities are reinforced on the palate. Throwing quite a bit of sediment. Tannins are no longer aggressive. Soft enough it you have it with some food. A touch of dried herb and black olive at the fairly long finish. At least from a half bottle, pretty approachable already. A perfect match for minestrone and meatballs with tomato risotto. |

2/9/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 88 pointsVery dark. One could mistake this for a Syrah or Cab based on the color. Quite fragrant. Raspberry and strawberry, and a little coffee. Pretty much the same on the palate. Slightly woody note as well. Surprisingly tannic at the start although it didn't take too long for it to soften; less than 30 minutes. Very dry. Decent length. Not bad, if not all that interesting. |

1/29/2022 - winesteward Likes this wine: 93 pointsAmber. Not a lot going on in the nose - mostly oranges. There's a good amount of sweetness, but not quite dessert sweet. Sweet spices, nuts, dried citrus peel, and raisins. Starts out pretty sweet but then the acidity kicks in to give it a lovely freshness and lift. Very tasty. I imagine this would be a killer wine for foie gras. Great sipping wine. Good length with a gentle bitterness at the finish which primes you for the next sip. Delicious stuff! |
