2011 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi Ranch

Russian River Valley more

Tasted over 3 days - consistent throughout (vacuvin'd and stored in fridge overnight). More open and rich than I thought it would be, given the character of other 2011 Carlisle's I've tried. An interesting red-fruited tartness to counter the richness. Drinking rather seamlessly at this point. Excellent Carlisle zin yet again.

Not sure if it was my palate, bottle shock, or an off bottle or what, but this bottle showed much better than the bottle I opened a couple of months ago. There was some subtle oak, and the wine as a whole was beautiful and expressive, showing a nice core of dark fruit and good balance and depth. Fantastic accompaniment to BBQ pork spare ribs.

Lots of primary fruit, fairly ripe, but balanced by abundant acidity. Love the field blend character of this wine. There are so many flavors going on throughout the palate. My first taste of a Two Acres bottling and I'm not disappointed, though I think this will really improve with a few years on it at least.

Not sure who is setting the drinking window on this wine, but this is drinking beautifully now and I'd say that this is only entering its prime drinking window now. A drinking window of 2008 - 2011 for a 2005 Napa Cabernet from a classic old school producer? That's a joke. The drinking window should be 2013 - 2025 for this. And for those of you that like full throttle Napa Cab, yes, this is not an exciting wine. Instead, this a balanced, medium-weight Cab without tons of oak, just pure Cab flavors. I found this to have very nice eucalyptus/minty Cali Cab aromas and flavors, good concentration, and good balancing acidity with structure and depth of fruit to age for 20 years. The palate does tend towards the simple side but I think more age will help out here.

The note written by <MATTEO> earlier is absolutely spot on. Though for me, the acidic imbalance detracts from my enjoyment a bit and I can't give it such a high score. Very good wine to accompany hearty pasta dishes.

This bottle was more advanced (read: over the hill) than the previous bottles that I've tried recently. Light fruit, good balance, a little barnyard funk. One has to expect some bottle variation in wines of this age I suppose.

Second bottle opened with a chance to spend more time with it and taste over a couple of days. My impression has not really changed very much: it's a very balanced, light, and pretty Pinot with very nice aromatics and interesting and pleasing earthy flavors. The character didn't change much with the extra air exposure on the second evening. I won't go so far as to say that it is "thin" or "watery", but I can't disagree with anyone that does; I did spend quite a bit of time paying attention to the finish where it seemed to lose focus and the flavors dissipated very quickly. On the other side of the spectrum, some other notes have used descriptors like "fruit-forward", "medium bodied", "good concentration" and I will have to disagree somewhat with those characterizations. To me this falls firmly into the "light-bodied" category and is not at all fruit forward or concentrated. In any case, I like this wine for its great aromatics and pure flavors that, to me, speak of the terroir. That said, this is certainly worth the $19 but, to be honest, I would not seek this out if it was at a price point above $28 or $30, as there are many other good domestic Pinot options available in that range.

Enjoyed this again - it seems to have settled down a bit since I last tried it. The dark, brooding nature of this wine is still there, though, and it really delivers a great drinking experience. I had this as a late night cocktail and it was great, though I think this shows better with a hearty meat and potatoes meal.

This is a balanced white with really interesting aromas and flavors. Flavors enhance as it warms up from fridge temperature. I wouldn't put this in the "refreshing and crisp" category -- it really drinks more like a serious red wine and has some weight to it.

Sound bottle. Ripe fruit, confected sweetness, really tastes very young. Simple and sweet, lacks structure and acidity. First glass was drinkable but my palate tired very quickly of this and I couldn't choke down another glass.

This seems very young still, with some prominent french oak on the nose and palate and boisterous young fruit throughout. Very good depth and concentration. Unfortunately, this did not last very long with the crowd I was with so it didn't get a chance to evolve much with air. Still, I think this has the makeup to improve for years to come, maybe 5 or 10 years or more.

This was opened at a family gathering with six tasters, so it was gone in less than an hour. Initially, poured into a decanter through an aerator. Fascinating and extremely pleasing nose with some fresh berries and a little funky note coming through. Very aromatic. I spent an inordinate amount of time sniffing before I took a sip because I was so fascinated by it. The palate showed very light and delicate at this point with some muted earthy flavors. My father referred to it as "thin" - not a compliment, but he has a decidedly new world and right bank bordeaux palate. The others said they liked it but there were few comments. Because this was gone so quickly due to the number of tasters, it did not get a chance to evolve with additional air, though I did get the last tiny pour from the decanter (two sips) and it seemed to be fleshing out a bit and gaining some weight. I will try the next bottle with my wife only and give it a longer decant.

Really weird nose on the pop 'n pour and even after a few hours of slow-oxing. Kind of a slightly rotten vegetable thing going on that was pretty repulsive. Fortunately, on the palate, the wine showed pretty well with some mature Pinot flavors but a bit tight and subdued and some alcohol was apparent. The next day I tried this again and the repulsive aromas were almost completely gone but the palate had picked up a lot of weight and was too ripe and alcoholic. Strange transformation.

On the pop 'n pour, this was pretty nice, showing some attractive aged zin characteristics with some nice pepper notes. However, with more air, this dried out and got astringent and oaky with prominent alcohol. It was very enjoyable in the early stages, though.

Like HAWK30, I found this to be too oak-heavy on the pop 'n pour. However, I still found the oak influence too heavy after leaving overnight, though there is a good core of fruit as well. I actually kept this for several days and the oak integrated a bit more each day, but, as another note described, the fruit fades. Many others seem to love this at this stage, but I think it needs a few years to shed some of the oak and flesh out a bit. I think it has the goods to be a great wine, but it's not there yet.

The deep core of fruit and unfiltered texture, traits that I've found with all Sandlers that I've tasted thus far, are here with this Grenache as well. Overall, I found it good but pretty unremarkable at this young stage. It's pretty well balanced and not overripe with good flavors and look for this to develop for a few more years. This was tasted after the very good Tercero 2010 Watch Hill Grenache.
