Lush and viscous, sweet core of fruit and bit of leather. Good heft but still elegant. Tannins are pleasantly bitter.

Tobacco, dark cherry, vanilla on the nose. Milk chocolate and charoset on the palate. Quite like this. Super delish, nice little acidic kick throughout. Modern-ish but not grossly so.

THE RED WHALE California Cabernet Tasting (Alek's house): Beautiful, shimmering dark color. Smells a bit hot, intense and ripe. There is an intriguing density on the nose. Well-balanced with structure provided by acid, soft tannins. The palate has sweet currant and blackberry. This is new world in style, but well-executed.

THE RED WHALE California Cabernet Tasting (Alek's house): Menthol on the nose, bit of red fruit. The palate is all cherry ludens. Not super exciting, but perfectly drinkable and a great deal. I like these guys.

THE RED WHALE California Cabernet Tasting (Alek's house): Smoky black currant on the nose. Smells "classic" and, within the context of Napa, Bordelaise in style. The wine is quite young and will certainly develop in the bottle for a couple years. Before the well-handled but fairly aggressive tannins set in, one can taste a very pure black currant combined with something like pencil lead.

THE RED WHALE California Cabernet Tasting (Alek's house): A pronounced note of Ethiopian coffee bean (read: blueberry) combines with dying lilac and something savory. On the palate, the fruit is buried under earthiness and a pretty serious wall of tannins, which coat and linger... This wine is super young.

THE RED WHALE California Cabernet Tasting (Alek's house): A nice medium ruby color betokens the charm of the cabernet. Red fruit (cranberry) and dried herbs on the nose. There is something pinot-like about the weight of this wine, which displays soft tannins that close out a very drinkable but not very "compelling" wine--which is a good thing. You can taste the location (Mendo and Lake) and vintage in this wine. Well done.

THE RED WHALE California Cabernet Tasting (Alek's house): The fruit on this nose is a bit reticent, showing mostly rubber. The 15.5% alc shows through on the palate, but it is not unpleasant. Dark fruits transition into firm tannins. There is a pleasing rusticity here, but it lacks balance and complexity. At $16, though, I'm not complaining.

THE RED WHALE California Syrah Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Dark plum, cough syrup, "sweet" nose. Good rustic mouthfeel that does not sacrifice acid for richness. Combines dried herbs with pleasant red and black fruit. What a value at $11!

THE RED WHALE California Syrah Tasting (The Jackson Arms): This purple wine smells of grape and alcohol at first, but it develops a black fruit profile with air. Cocoa/blackberry palate. I found this wine to be a bit monolithic, but still quite enjoyable.

THE RED WHALE California Syrah Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Loved this wine. Very nice rose and white flower component floats above blueberry and green pepper. Very nice, refreshing body, light on its feet with vibrant acidity, with a richness that you register in your short term memory. That sounds ridiculous, but it's true. A great wine.

THE RED WHALE Sonoma Tasting (The Red Whale): This had a cherry chapstick, strawberry and cinnamon nose that indicated grenache immediately. The palate is fairly straightforward, light on its feet and with delicate tannins. Quite nice, but a bit pricey at $23.

THE RED WHALE Sonoma Tasting (The Red Whale): Bacon, savory black olive, blueberry, and an overall meatiness that everyone quite liked. Powerful, tight, dark and brooding. Quite a serious wine but somehow still fresh. This wine is good, but demanding.

THE RED WHALE Sonoma Tasting (The Red Whale): Nose of confectioned red fruits...not quite jammy, but definitely red fruit with some sugar mixed in. Very fruity-driven, with nice, finely ground black pepper tannins. Good stuff--rustic, fresh and bracing--but just a bit pricey.

THE RED WHALE Sonoma Tasting (The Red Whale): Definitely some malo on the nose, baked pear, creamy, sur-lie yeastiness. Medium body and nice, crisp acidity. Lemon meringue pie. After a few hours, yeastiness turns into maltiness, almond...not totally pleasant. At $11, this wine admirably combines lushness and acidity. Good value.

Drank at Camino in Oakland. Everyone loved this bottle. Quite savory--bloody, smoky, bacon--but with great freshness and a very pure blueberry component. The wine developed throughout the meal, with warmer spices emerging. Quite serious but very pleasant. Really wish I left some in the bottle and watched this develop over a few days. Just a stunning Syrah from Salinia.

The Red Whale California Pinot Tasting (The Jackson Arms): My favorite wine of the tasting. Some found this nose a bit off-putting, but I loved it. Reminded me of a Loire Valley wine, with green pepper and fresh, crunchy tart berries. It tastes like a Cali wine, though, lovely fresh fruit accompanying the briary characteristics. Glad to see this kind of wine being made in these parts--and at $27. Bravo!

The Red Whale California Pinot Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Very RRV nose of blood orange, christmas spice and dark cherry. Someone picked up cherry cola as well as a "dark room" smell (this blew off on day 2). Nice and lush. Once can tell this is well made but it needs some time to come together.

The Red Whale California Pinot Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Yum! Fresh raspberry and strawberry combine with leafiness on the nose. Showing good "lift." Everyone likes the nose on this. Very fresh in the mouth despite not bursting with acidity. Reminds me of a more modern-styled Bourgogne Rouge. Very bright and spicy rather than lush or velevty. Well-balanced and a great deal at $21.

The Red Whale California Pinot Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Quite powerful. Sweet strawberry and plum paired, tobacco. A bit goopy and brooding, reminding me of a 2007 CdR, but one feels that it just requires time. Tannins are a bit bitter--almost licorice-like. I liked this, but it's not overly pleasant. At $23, this is a lot of wine.

Pale gold, wonderful tropical aromas and a distinctive lemon curd note. Very elegant and well balanced...just the right amount of fat to round out the acidic fruit profile. Delicious Burgundy. (bought at legrand)
