Decanted at 3:30 for dinner at 6pm. Not a perfect bottle. Seems somewhat prematurely aged, esp. compared to the one I had just 5 years ago. Seems 15 years older than that bottle. This one must have been cooked along the way, but it was still enjoyable.

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted at 12:30pm.] Sweet fruit, but with excellent structure. A touch hot, but that should fade in a few years. Menthol.

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted for one hour at about 11am.] Fragrant black cherry nose. Rich, sweet, gorgeous. Still young, but quite enjoyable. Should be at its best 2020-2030.

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted at 12:30pm.] Muted black fruit nose. Tight and tannic. Very backward and hard to judge at this point. Doesn't seem to have quite the richness of the best 2001 Barolos. 93-??

Cappellano Vertical (Lusardi’s Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted for one hour at about 8am.] A bit hot with black cherry liqueur on the nose and palate. So intense. A little over-ripe for me. Too much like cough medicine. Could be great in 10 years, but I would not bet on it.

[Double decanted at 4pm. Brought to restaurant around 7pm.] Rough, tannic, unresolved. Not bad, but not what I'd hoped for.
[Open 4 days with the cork stuck back in.] It is now what I had hoped for. Pure black cherry fruit. A lovely nose of flowers and spice. Amazing. I will definitely have to give my other bottles significant air.

Nebbiolo Dinner with Punch Brothers (Peck's Arcade, Troy, NY): [Double-decanted for 1.5 hours at 5:30pm. Consumed around 1:30am.] Nose of dark black fruit and tar. Like the 98 Bartolo, not what I was expecting in a 1998 Barolo. Much more backward and structured. This is proving to be a much more serious vintage than it was originally given credit for. Still young with plenty of tannin and sweet black fruit.

Nebbiolo Dinner with Punch Brothers (Peck's Arcade, Troy, NY): [Double-decanted for 45 minutes around 6pm. Consumed around 12:30am.] Tight nose. Lots of lovely sweet fruit in the mouth, but not showing much else at this point. Hard to judge such a young wine in the context of these older ones. Certainly a very clean, well-made wine. Will have to wait to judge its future complexity. 92-95

Nebbiolo Dinner with Punch Brothers (Peck's Arcade, Troy, NY): [Double-decanted at 11am. Consumed around midnight.] Purity!!! Who could believe that a nearly 50 year old wine could shine like this? The extraordinary clarity of this wine was immediately obvious to everyone at the table. Hard to put a score on this. It didn't have the complexity or structure of the Giacosas, but what it had was the essence of pure aged Nebbiolo. I could not have asked for more from a wine that was older than all but 2 people at the table.
