2010 Saxum Syrah Booker Vineyard

Paso Robles more

Decanted 22 hours. From memory, high quality dark fruits lead the way in this well balanced and compelling youngster. Obviously full bodied and heavily fruited but also somehow maintaining that Saxumesque sense of overriding elegance, almost as if guiding the bulk with feminine guile. Lots of room to shed some fruit, gain some complexity, and ratchet up the charm, I plan to wait a few years for the next but we'll see.

Fully mature, and frankly caught right before fading into oblivion, this showed a lovely light lemon and mineral character. Very pretty and well defined. Very Chablisesque.

Bright, clean, and fresh with excellent intensity. Shows a bit too much vanilla oak at this point but another exceptional value Secret. Better in a couple of years.

Pnp. No notes taken but from memory this was surprisingly fresh and lively for its age with interesting flavors of caramelized apricots, plums, honey, and dried flower and berry potpourri. Showed the beautiful sunset colored rim of maturity. Stood out amongst many good wines on the evening. In fact, probably tied with a 2010 Saxum Booker Vineyard.

Pretty and precise. Lots of crunchy red-fruited pinot character with a lightly creamy texture. Currently preferred over the more masculine and less resolved Estate, though with cellar time that may change. 89-90

Good solid syrah that showed best after a few hours in the decanter. Blackberry with loads of tar, some savory herbal notes, and black pepper. A crowd pleaser.

Decanted 2 hrs. Smooth and easy with moderate richness coupled with good depth and underlying power. Lovely structure as well. There's a slight dip to the dark fruit/wood/herbs profile in the mid palate, which may or may not resolve with further cellaring. Shows better without food due to lower acidity. Despite my nitpicking this is an excellent young wine that's a pleasure to drink.

Decanted 1 hr. Soft and fully approachable right out of the gate. There's an underlying green note, but not too distracting. Has a lovely supple mouthfeel and the fruit forward personality of flamboyancy without the mid-palate depth to get there, which was a relief.

Decanted 2 hours. Typical Epoch with its round, gentile mouthfeel and purple glycerin glass-clinging style. Didn't show a lot of temp character nor the expected toothsome tannic bite on the finish, but a seamless and classy Paso version nonetheless.

Decanted 4 hours. Gorgeous depth and quality to the California Grand Cru quality fruit but it is buried beneath excessive oak. A problem repeated throughout his entire '09 vintage. Even our grilled ribeye couldn't tame it. Aargh, so frustrating!

Lovely wine. Delicate fruit balanced between citrus and tropical with some vanilla cream. A little light on acidity and lots of minerality on the mid palate. Good sense of chardonnay character without the bitterness of oak or the metallic twang of Chablis. Soft, easy, and delicious.

Decanted 2 hours and drank over 2 days. Soft and layered with creamy sweet red and black fruits, melted licorice, well saturated chalk, and a dusting of cocoa with plenty of graceful sex appeal. It could use a few more years to tone down the fruit intensity as the impression of sweetness from the grenache was a bit much on both days, but the texture and mouthfeel were exquisite!

3/4/2015 - Redguy wrote: NR

Aggressively decanted for 2 hours. Wow, there's so much high quality material here. It is such a bruiser on its own at this point with huge fruit and tannin, but there is balance and charm. And Perfume! With medium-rare grilled ribeyes the tannic veil lifted revealing a seductive, elegantly styled beauty. Amazing!

While the first thing you notice is the intense power and concentration, what really sets it apart is that underlying elegance that allows glimpses of the extraordinary beauty waiting to emerge... a soft satiny whisper rising above the roar of engines.

Decanted 2 hrs. First experience with this wine and it's more open and generous than expected. There's a lovely ball of fruit and secondary's like tobacco and fresh soil that are matched perfectly to a comparably sized wall of chocolaty wood tannin. Quite round and supple with a silky fine texture that adds feminine elegance. And the whole thing is stitched up nicely by well integrated acids. Certainly approachable now, though this should become ever more lovely with a few years in cellar. 90-91 today

This opened up nicely after a couple hours in the decanter and paired wonderfully with grilled lamb T-bones. Concentrated dark fruits, damp earth, and coffee laced wood notes and spice that power through the moderate length finish. Shows the power and richness of the vintage without the roundness of more modern examples. Not the most complex, but the quality of the fruit and tannin are excellent and the surprisingly good acidity and moderately powerful backbone points to the excellence of this Chateau.

Light chardonnay profile. Brassy and grassy with light lemon and plenty of oily minerality, which defines the mid palate. Wanting for depth and acidity, merely decent as a light quaffer.

Decanted 2 hrs. Round but gentile in its touch this shows some lemon chiffon and coconut cream, which gives it a tropical feel, brassy top notes that faded a bit with air, and a touch of marshmallow oak influence. Very nice but it seems a bit loosey-goosey. I would like more focus and acidic cut at this price.
