2012 Berberana Tempranillo Dragon

Vino de la Tierra de Castilla more

6/29/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 83 points

Not real excited about this wine, but not ready to rate it as low as 79. It is a little weak. The color is clear enough to see your two fingers. We get some red raspberry and bing cherry on the nose. Relatively thin across the palate for a Tempranillo. Seems to gain some structure with some time in the glass. Very acidic, even poured through the aerator. Some red raspberry on the finish, but mostly a disappointment.

Really bright and sharp. Burgundian nose with a bit of barnyard behind the black cherry fruit. The color is dark, almost purple, but you can still see your two fingers. Subdued, still young black cherry and blackberry fruit that could really use a decant. The acid likewise could use some bottle age or a decant. The mouth feel and viscosity is pure Oregon. The tannins are soft and subtle. Blackberry and light minerality on the finish.

This rose has a flavor and aroma completely different and unique from any other rose I have ever tasted. There is a briny, metallic, slate flavor to the extremely crisp cranberry and other red fruit flavors. Fills the palate with a hard to describe, outdoors, forest floor, evergreen meets petroleum influence to some extremely fresh fruit. Super solid, lip smacking acid.

So rarely do we see a vintage designated sparkling wine. I like almost everything I get a chance to taste from this producer. The very clear, just barely salmon color is no indication of the layers of subtle fruit and mineral complexities to follow. The relatively rich viscosity shows there is a fair amount of Chaddonnay in the blend. The fruit is a somewhat unusual combination of strawberry and lemon. The bubbles make it glorious. Rich creamy finish with near perfect acidity.

2014 Carmen Sauvignon Blanc Wave Series Left Wave

Leyda Valley more

6/14/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 87 points

This is sort of a split personality wine. The New Zealand experience of the Chilean winemaker is readily apparent in the taste of this Sauvignon Blanc. On the nose, and the first taste on the palate is that unmistakable grass and herb combination, but it is entirely civilized. Following, is some typical to Chile wet earth influence that works rather well. Plenty of citrus, grapefruit, and apple fruit, but also an herbal, zesty, crisp, mineral thing. Relatively light and easy on the palate. Almost elegant for a Sauvignon Blanc.

2012 Brandborg Pinot Noir Fleur de Lis White Pinot Noir

Umpqua Valley more

6/9/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 88 points

Like probably everyone else I don't know exactly what to make of this wine. Their first vintage or so, they produced white Pinot out of grapes that would not quite ripen properly. But, by this time in the evolution of this offering, they have perfected the process, and chosen to make a certain amount of this on purpose. We are sure glad they did. This is a pretty tasty wine. We served it at cellar temperature, but it really blossomed as it warmed a bit in the glass. There was a superb combination of the cherry, tannin and acid of a red Pinot Noir, with a lightness and delicacy of a fine white wine. Just the right amount of balancing acidity. Great mouth feel. Maraschino cherry on the finish.

Spot on Bordeaux Supererieur. Before I even read the label I knew this was majority Merlot. Also did not realize this was from the Saint Emilion side of the tracks. The color is a relatively clear reddish purple that allows you to see your two fingers. The nose is raspberry meets cotton candy. Solid hit of red fruit across the palate. A bit of a chalky texture. Not complex, but very clean. Balanced. Just wants you to take another sip.

2013 Turn Key Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Pillar Heights

6/20/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 85 points

My last review of the 2012 version of this wine was disappointing to say the least. This 2013 release needed an overnight decant to show it's true tasting qualities, but still nothing all that special. Typically I find Paso Robles Cabernet's to show more red fruit than dark, and this one is no exception. The decanting brought out some red raspberry and strawberry. On the simple side. Little or no oak, or tannin. Nice fruit and no off flavors.

Was very pleasantly surprised by this Riesling. There were some commendable secondary flavors behind the typical slightly off dry honeyed citrus, pear and apple flavors. A nice touch of earthy minerality. Maybe some light orange marmalade and molasses. Crisp well proportioned acidity. Nice weight and viscosity. Lively and tasty.

2013 Aldi Sauvignon Blanc The Exquisite Collection

Nice job Aldi, for under $10 an authentic French version of Sauvignon Blanc full of flavor and character. The nose is pure Sauvignon Blanc, well appropriately subdued and civilized. The color is slightly more golden than from most other areas. The flavors of grapefruit, gooseberry, lemon, apple and pear survive harmoniously for our enjoyment. Precise balancing acidity. Nice weight in the mouth. A true value.

Central Valley more

6/27/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 points

From one of my favorite Chilean producers, this Cabernet is somewhat on the light side in terms of body and color, but does a pretty good job with the flavor side. The palate is much more red fruit than dark, especially raspberry. There are some mild, typical Chilean earthy sappy flavors. The roof of the mouth is very nicely coated with a lingering cherry/raspberry preserves flavor. The finish has lots of graphite with the persistent red fruit.

A really decent bottle of white wine for under $10, but not nearly a 90 point wine. Has an immediate, quick hitting, mouth filling taste of green pepper influenced lime and grapefruit, but overall lacks the typical, continuing assault of flavors. Could be this is still a little young and not quite together. The acid sort of overpowers and drown out the non citrus pear and apple flavors all the way through the finish.

Clarksburg White Blend more

6/5/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 points

Long a fan of a similar offering from Pine Ridge Winery, had to give this a try. Very satisfied with my choice. Though I often contemplate "why not just individual Chenin and Viognier" have to admit this blend has some merit. The combination of the Viognier bringing some body and richness, and the Chenin bringing some crisp acidity, the result is a taste and flavor profile neither could achieve alone. A wide range of fruit from melon, papaya, mango, pear, peach and apricot to citrus and pineapple. Maybe a tiny bit flabby, and probably best served at close to room temperature.

I have been walking past the wines from this producer almost as long as I can remember without giving them as much as a notice. Though by no means spectacular, this is way more than just acceptable and actually pretty good. This is one of those value Merlot's you could pick out blind because of the mild but noticeable green pepper and wet flint. Not rich and fruity. Probably a little artificial and manipulated. Wish it had more fruit. The oak probably did not come from barrels, but overall not too bad. The finish is quite stylish with moderate cherry before oak and graphite.

This was a gift for dog sitting that was very pleasantly surprising. In a sea of so so Pinot Grigio this one was decidedly fresh and vibrant. The nose is floral lemon and peach. The palate is first extremely crisp but also has more than enough fresh peach, pear and citrus fruit for a high 80's score. Some nice supporting flavors like lanolin and wet white stone. Just the right amount of mouth puckering acidity. Serious lingering citrus and orchard fruit finish.

2010 Chateau St. Jean Fumé Blanc

Russian River Valley more

6/17/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 88 points

Not normally a fan of Fume Blanc, this one has always been a pretty close to my heart. Chateau Saint Jean was the third place I ever tasted, in wine country, and they offered this as one of their three tastes of white wine. It was unique and tasty then, and still is now. I believe the bottle age this 2010 received in storage somewhere has really enhanced the flavors. Very dark for a Sauvignon Blanc. There is a commendable richness from some barrel aging and malo lactic. The nose has ginger ale, mature wine barrel, tree sap and citrus. Still very crisp, the lemon, lime and other citrus dominate the lighter melon and peach flavors. Gains flavor momentum as it slides down the palate, and also as we drink down the glass. Some taste of barrel with acid and fruit on the finish.

Not terribly exciting, but really nothing wrong. Pretty dark for a Garnacha. I raised the score a point after the first glass mostly because some of the stemmy funk dissipated and the finish just wants to keep on going. Beautiful magenta rim. Alcohol on the moderately suspect nose.
Not exactly fruity at first but some sharp red raspberry and cherry sneak into the flavor profile. Old world flinty and graphite secondary flavors with some wet stone. Lingering licorice, wet steel and black cherry.

I am going to humbly eat my words from my previous review of this wine and start all over again. Last time I gave it an 86 thinking my palate was missing an appreciation for this wine. This time it gets an 88+ mostly because of a really nice taste of peach and honey that was totally absent from the last bottle. Still has bracing acidity and a solid touch of minerality. My last bottle for some reason tasted flat. This one is vibrant and alive.

About the same overall as the 2013. This one does have the signs of a little spritz in the glass, and the taste on the palate. Not complex, but still very tasty. Pineapple and very ripe peach on the palate. Raw, but necessary and adequate balancing acidity. A touch of glycerine. Big mouthfeel and viscosity.

This is the real thing. Often the stuff we get around the $10 price point is mediocre at best, but not this one. Thick and unctuous fruit. Unashamed big dark fruit and serious alcohol on the nose. Depth and structure across the palate with lingering black fruit on the roof of the mouth. Probably a touch of residual sugar. Plenty of oak which has now integrated. Sneaky balancing in the background acidity. Big finish of blackberry and super ripe black cherry on the finish, with even a hint of tannin.

There is nothing really wrong here, but also nothing very exciting. Unfortunately the flavors of this wine very much remind me of bargain basement white wines from California Central Coast, a little flabby and not very much acid. In truth, this tastes a lot like Two Buck Chuck. It may have a little more white pepper spiciness. It would be hard to pick this out as Viognier blind. There is some typical Viognier style generous viscosity, but not much else to mention.

I'm not going to score this below 80. This is by no means a memorable wine, but it is clean and without flaws. My first taste made me think; 2 buck chuck at twice the price. It had that atypical sassafras leaf type of flavor. So, I put the cork back in a tried it next day. That was a good idea. It is barely discernible as Sauvignon Blanc, but it is not terrible. A lot of the off flavors dissipated revealing some pineapple and peach flavors. No grass, no herbaceousness, minimal acid.

This is pretty respectable for a mass produced California Central Coast Pinot. There is a nice concentration of the darker side of Pinot like flavors, black cherry, plum, and blackberry. Made in a lessy, oaky style, it still, just barely, maintains it's Pinot like delicacy. There is plenty of oak, but there is enough fruit and acidity to balance, The finish is rich and creamy with dark fruit and some earthy stuff.

Very interesting complex nose of cherry cola, rose water, watermelon rind and fresh cut lemon. Super light and delicate upon entry to the palate, it takes a second for the flavors to kick in. Light salmon color. Once it coats the palate, the complexity found on the nose releases and expands many times past the initial delicacy leaving a tart cherry and red raspberry lingering impression. Superbly integrated with perfect balancing acidity.

6/5/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 85 points

This Riesling from the Pfalz is quite different from their Mosel offering. There is a mildly oily character to the stone fruit flavors. Has the heft and weight typical of a German Riesling. Quite sweet on approach, but better balanced as the other flavor components access the palate. Does not have that secondary hint of tropical fruit. There is kind of a brown sugar flavor with very nice acidity on the finish.
