2014 Blason de Bourgogne Mâcon-Villages

Chardonnay more

2/8/2016 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 85 points

It is a little simple and one dimensional, but still sharp, fruity and tasty. Medium golden color. The nose is crushed citrus and honeysuckle. There area few of those mildly nutty and industrial off flavors and aromas. A bit of glycerine on the palate. Sharp acidity. Decent, weighty viscosity. Something a little bitter on the moderate at best finish.

Unique and inspired blend of vinifera and hybrid red grape varieties. The nose is earty, dusty and rustic. Noticable dry tannins on entry. Muterd cherry and other red fruits iniially that open up nicely with some swirling, and really start to grow on you. Like moat Michigan wines, delicate and light but still full flavored. Opens up to some blueberry and buttery richness. Some roundness from oak. Mulberry, cherry, and graphite on the finish.

Toasty oak nose with wild cherry preserves. Rich, sophisticated but still elegant mouth feel. Well rounded and integrated cherry, raspberry, blackberry and plum fruit. Not full bodied but full flavored. This 2012 still young on it's feet. Quite drinkable now, but the fruit, oak, tannins and acid could benefit from more short term cellaring. A bit of green pepper, graphite, mocha and toasty oak with the fruit on the finish.Even a lingering taste of elderberry.

NV The Round Barn Winery Chardonnay

Lake Michigan Shore more

12/27/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 88 points

The whole package nicely captures the essence of the Chardonnay varietal. Honeysuckle meets vabillla, tree sap, pear, apple cider and citrus with a bit of typical Michigan terroir thrown in. Judicious use of oak nicely rounds out the ripe fruit. Maybe some lees action. The acid layer makes it's own contribution towards the finish after the fruit has filled your palate.

NV Bedrock Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc Sherman & Hooker's Shebang! Cuvee III

I am going against the grain of other tasters and declare this wine delightful. It doesn't exude Sauvignon Blanc character because the flavor profile is that of Semillon. There is a nutty, rich smoothness that is really unique for California. The subtle elegance and mild superb balance are commendable. The real beauty of this wine is the finish which leaves a sandalwood, walnut shell flavor, with a bit of caramel, honey and peach that to my palate is a real treat. As it warms in the glass an even more interesting cinnamon and spice emerges. Good job Bedrock.

Did not realize as I was tasting this wine it sells for under $10. This is not an incredible wine, but it is pretty complete for the price. The nose shows medium heavy toast oak, probably not from barrells, ripe red raspberry, cherry and blackberry. Super dark purple color. Typical northern exposure, expressive, ripe, deep red and dark fruit. Not exactly layered and structured, but still some interesting hints of menthol, graphite, vanilla and minerals for a wine this inexpensive.

Though not exactly typical, there are many things to enjoy with this super value Pinot. I don't mean this in a bad way, but part of the flavor profile reminds me of the taste of Nyquil, with a minty, menthol component. Also some flavors like cherry cough drops. Bright magenta color. Sharp, spicy, baked, sweetened tart cherry fruit with surprising lingering richness. Not really tannic or acidic. Uniquely different from other Pinot's in this price range.

Like almost all Riesling's produced in Michigan, the overall characteristics of this wine are an elegant delicacy, and precise crispness. A little lighter in viscosity than Rieslings from most other areas. The color is rather clear. There is an earthy, slate, taste component. There is some structured guava and grapefruit behind the initial apple and pear fruit. By the finish there is some peppery spiciness with the acid and fruit.

Most if not all the Riesling's we have tried from this producer have been regional, not designated. This one seems just a little more focused and precise. This is still a relatively uncomplicated, value priced wine that has some nice, secondary chalk and slate flavors. Tart apple, peach, pear and citrus fruits. Just enough residual sugar to remind us it is German Riesling.

There is lots to like here. For about $10 this is a tasty mouth full of Cotes du Rhone. Made in somewhat of an International style, this 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah blend that doesn't have much of those toasted, roasted, stemmy and leafy flavors. Little or no oak. Not overly acidic. Just a lot of ripe red fruit with some "Old World" earthiness.

2/2/2016 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 87 points

Knew this was a Washington State wine by the taste before I read the label. The fruit had that big sunshine, ripe red fruit, soft but expressive entry. This one is made in a little different style. The ripeness overcomes most of those typical, welcome, mild green pepper meets graphite and mocha flavors. The fruit is actually sharp and precise fresh red raspberry and mulberry. Still very young and vibrant. Juicy. Well integrated oak that really does it's job well without imposing. Even a little lean, in a good way, for a Merlot.

I'm a little surprised, this may be the first time I have ever been less impressed by a Kiwi Pinot the second day than the first. Upon opening was impressed this 2012 was so lively, especially the tremendous nose. The fruit was sharp and precise. The nose was wet dirt with ripe red cherry. Almost textbook magenta color. There were integrated mint and menthol flavors with cinnamon and a bit of sweetness. And, of course, some rustic, gamey flavors. The second day the nose had turned into poopy wet socks. The sharpness is gone. Still spicy. Relatively civilized acid. The fruit is tired and things are sort of falling apart. This wasn't very expensive, just wish we would have finished it while it was fresh.

84 is probably generous. The nose actually has some true Pinot Noir, clove and barnyard aromas. The color is clearish magenta. The palate at best is weak and at worst totally devoid of flavor. Don't think the problem is residual sugar, though I don't think it is totally dry. Way deficient in real acidity. Thought rhe 2012 was more credible.

Not as disappointed as I was last time tasting this Zin, I still can't get excited. The nose, with some commendable fresh brambłe and blackberry fruit was basically a tease. The palate still has an industrial and nedicinal flavor that is totally unfamiliar as a wîne flavor. Rather thin color. Disappearing mid palate. Kind of tastes like hand soap.

Very nice indication of what Columbia Crest can do with Syrah in Washington State. For only 8 bucks we get to enjoy some true, ripe, clean, easily identifiable Syrah type flavors. Big expressive nose of upfront raspberry and blackberry flavors with the aroma of roses and toasty oak. Mouth coating, sharp, red and dark fruit. Rounded and smooth oak and fruit flavors with just enough crispness. Way more concentrated than we would expect.

Kudos again to our friends from Aldi for delivering a real Pinot at a ridiculous price point. This is not world class Pinot, but for a cool 7 bucks it hits enough flavor points for a hell yes. Clearish magenta color. This one avoids the pitfall of many California value priced Pinot's that have an industrial nose, this one has violets and maraschino cherry. The fruit is about adequate, not exactly overpowering, but holds it's own against some serious acid and tannins. It is not real concentrated and fades a bit with some air, but still good job.

I still remember the impression the 2007 version of this wine left on my palate. That one surprised me, but this time we knew what to expect. This is a lot of wine for the money that drink way beyond it's price point. This time I think the Carmenere component is a little more dominant than I rembered. There is deep rich purple color on full bodied wine with plenty of smokey oak. Kind of a traditional Bordeaux blend with a Chilean bend with a stemmy, woody characteristic. Lots of both red and dark fruit. Smokey. Spicy. Plentry of oak. A hint of raisin with big graphite and lingering dark fruit on the finish.

Give them credit for what it is. This is a smooth, mild, International style, crowd pleasing, value priced red wine. Always found way under $10 and extremely consistent from vintage to vintage and they make a boat load of it. Nice ruby red moderate color. Decent red fruit entrance with more than a little help from some mild pepper, dried herbs and earthy elements. Medium bodied. Not exactly rich and complex but very approachable and drinkable in lots of situations. Solid acidity. Cherry and other red fruit on the finish.

To it's benefit, I think this 2011 is a little long in the tooth and would most likely have showed better aboiut a year ago. Probably not exactly fruit forward upon release, at this point in time the aged fruit is not fullfilling it's task of balancing some of the earthy stuff the terroir in Cohors is almost guaranteed to bring us. There is a noticeable streak of pencil lead and slate affecting the mostly dark fruit. Close to full bodied. Tar, licorice and wet tree bark secondary flavors. With a little more fruit we could better appreciate these normally enhancing flavors. Would like to try a more current vintage.

Something to admire here. This 2011 Pinot Grigio should be well past it's peak by now, but is actually showing quite well. Part of it's success is due to a little more residual sugar than would be appropriate upon release, but that has magically preserved and probably enhanced this wine today. It does taste like a mature white wine, just a touch of oxidation and a touch of bottle funk. The color is pretty dark gold. The taste is totally acceptable molasses and caramel infused citrus and spicy apple. Still youthful and zesty. I don't think they intended this wine to show this well this far from the vintage and this should probably been sold and consumed by now, but lucky us today.

At first taste, having no idea this was a product of Antinori, thought this was one of those unique little treasures we occasionally stumble across. Given it's famous ownership pedigree, we can easily expound on what and why we think it is so good. There is a crisp, precise, sharp entry of fruit and minerals close to what we expect from Chablis. The combination of fruit, acid and minerals is basically incredible for $13 in South Carolina. We taste citrus, especially tangerine and orange peel with pear and melon. Vedry judicious light touch of oak really raises the bar. Even a touch of nuttiness with clean, crisp citrus on the finish.

In about the same level as their Cabernet offering, this humble Lodi Chardonnay from a very generic producer has limited but noticeable merit. You can tell it is Chardonnay with a bit of spicy citrus, peach and mango fruit and a bit more viscosity than most non Chardonnay wines. Not exactly crisp or precise, but not totally terrible.

We did everything we could to give this Cabernet a chance. At first taste things were disjointed, overly acidic with underwhelming fruit. After a couple of minutes of vigorous swirling we were able to discern some real Cabernet green garden, green pepper, leafy, mineral and red currant flavors. Think there was some acid manipulation. Not much oak or tannin. This producer creates hundreds of pretty generic wines and this one has some merit but there are better places to spend your $10.

Despite it's NV humble origins from a producer who releases more brands than anyone can remember, this is a pretty decent wine. I'm sure there is a small amount of residual sugar, and know there is a basic lack of natural acidity, but there are still things to like. The taste on the roof of the mouth is exactly what you would expect from both Petit Sirah and Petit Verdot with rich roasted blueberry and blackberry. Very fruit forward without much else in the flavor department. Deep purple glass staining color. Rich dark fruit nose. The viscosity towards the finish is the heavy feeling of residual sugar.
