2014 Domaine de Pellehaut Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne Harmonie Rouge

Red Blend more

7/29/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 points

We don't get much red wine from Cotes de Gascogne, so we don't exactly know if this one is typical or not. The nose, and the palate both have a very rustic, evergreen, maybe hemlock, or zinnia style flavor influence. The color is moderate to heavy magenta. Surprisingly rich mouth feel. A sharp, evergreen entrance to the palate followed by moderate blackberry and plum flavors. 12.5% alcohol is easily integrated and capably balanced. The finish leaves something like a stemmy flavor to the ripe dark fruit.

2011 Château Argadens

Bordeaux Supérieur Red Bordeaux Blend more

7/29/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 89 points

A real find, this was only $11 at our favorite locally owned retailer. Easily identifiable, quite typical, expressive, Bordeaux type flavors about half fruit, and half non fruit. Almost perfect Cabernet color. The nose was somewhat shy pouring into the decanter, but did exhibit some really nice rose blossoms meets cherry skin. The palate has a flinty, mineral influence to the red fruit first flavor profile. Lots of secondary flavors like vanilla, wet leaves, minerals, graphite and gun metal. Still young, drying tannins. Seamless acid. Just a touch short of the concentration needed to breal the 90 point glass ceiling.

I'm becoming a big fan of Portuguese red wines. Like many others, this one seems to have nice combination of "New World" upfront fruitiness with some "Old World" mineral enhanced earthy flavors. Though close to full bodied, the mouth feel reminds me of a Petit Sirah, or a Bonardo. The color is really dark purple. Nice blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit. Youngish tannins. Really opens up with some time in the glass. Rich blackberry finish.

2013 Snap Dragon Pinot Noir

California more

7/29/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 points

I often walk past this brand thinking is not a serious offering. Seems to be my loss. This very fairly priced Pinot Noir is not going to blow you away with concentrated layers of flavor, but it is a very solid, fruit forward red wine. The color is dark for a Pinot. The nose has some barnyard in front of some prune and mullberry aromas. Pretty big viscosity. Sharp raspberry, cherry and prune fruit. More vanilla than you would expect, probably from an oak treatment that did not come from barrels. Adequate, but not overpowering acidity = ready to drink now. By the finish, I taste some residual sugar, which I don't think they need to promote this wine, but it is what it is.

5/2/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 points

With no disrespect intended, this Carmenere seems to be made for the International type palate. They have tamed the gamey, sappy flavors without reducing the integrity of this noble varietal. The nose has some typical green pepper, crushed cocoa bean, peppery aromas enhancing the red raspberry, currant and blackberry fruit. That palate has a viscosity that might indicate a touch of sweetness that also seems to appear in the tasting profile. The finish leaves the typical Chilean impression of wet tree bark with some graphite lingering dark fruit.

We just tasted their 2013 last month. This is a nice rendition of California Pinot, but did not impress me as much as the 2013. Pretty typical for a California Pinot. Medium color, we can easily see our two fingers. Mild floral aromas with plenty of maraschino cherry on the nose. Decent viscosity and mouth feel with sharp, spicy cherry fruit. Mild indication of oak. Young. Moderate tannins. Soft and approachable.

7/27/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 80 points

As much as liked the 2013 version of this wine, and also enjoyed their white Terre di Chietti, I am really disappointed with this Chianti. It is easy explain why, they filtered out all the good, tasty stuff. This wine is almost totally sterile, and really never should have been released to the public. Whatever grape growing or wine making flaw they had to eliminate, also eliminated the flavor. Even imagination can not bring any redeeming qualities to this one.

A solid, true to varietal, California style Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep dark color. The nose is mildly metallic with dark cherry, red raspberry and some oak. Close to full bodied palate with nice red and dark fruit, but plenty of supporting secondary metallic, gritty earth flavors. A bit of sharpness and spice. Decent harmonious acidity. Very nice for the price

2014 Washington Hills Riesling Late Harvest

Columbia Valley more

7/25/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 86 points

This is one of those when the label says "Late Harvest" it means it. This wine is a little too sweet for my palate to enjoy. Nothing really wrong, and there are plenty of times to enjoy a wine like this. I just was not ready for this much sweetness, so the refreshing factor my palate needed at 5 PM was not quite there. The color is very golden. The nose has ripe peach and honeysuckle. The palate is cloyingly sweet, but no denying the mouth full of honeyed peach pear and citrus. This wine is really rich and actually has plenty of balancing acid as the lingering flavor on the finish is mostly lemon.

I was pretty sure when I saw this on the shelf, it was a serious wine. Been to their tasting room and know their attempt to produce premium red wine is commendable. This is a serious wine. The color is a little on the light side, shiny magenta. The nose has some mild earthy funk, quite European, with red raspberry, cherry skins and wet gun metal. Pretty decent viscosity. The fruit profile is very similar to other North Carolina red wines I have tasted with a sharp, spicy cranberry, cherry flavor. Some, but not over the top, influence from oak. As you get close to the finish, some very young, greenish, not quite nature, tannis dry the mouth out a little.

They got this one right, this is what Zin is supposed to taste like. Most of those around the $10 price lack the authentic, pure, upfront, juicy red and dark fruit this one shows. Really nice dark red color. The nose is jammy with plenty of fruit, some oak and alcohol. The palate is Zin lovers paradise. Big fruit, close to, but not exactly jammy or flabby. Rich mouth feel for a thin skinned grape. Nice lash of oak which combined with a little bottle age hols things together in harmony.

2013 Robert Mondavi Winery Zinfandel Private Selection

Central Coast more

5/20/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 85 points

I'm not super excited about this wine. Mondavi Private Selection occasionally overdelivers, rarely disappoints, but usually is true to the varietal, clean and well made. There is nothing wrong with this Zin, it just does not have that "pop" of in your face fruit us Zin lovers crave. Decanting did not accomplish much. The oak seems artificial. There is a mild tree sap flavor I am not a fan of. Superb dark color. I would not call the nose fruity, but there is a nice component of fruit. The palate has mulberry, vanilla and tree sap. Typical Zin acidity. A little weak, at least on the mouth feel, darkj fruit finish.

7/22/2015 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 89 points

We don't get much chance to taste a California Viognier, but when we do we can rest assured the producer is committed and enthusiastic about the varietal, or else they would not bother. This is serious Viognier. They don't mention much about the winemaking process, but I will bet some of this wine has seen neutral oak barrels. The color is clearish golden. The nose has wet shale with lemon and grapefruit. The mouthfeel is really generous without being flabby. The acid is super crisp but at the same time civilized. There is a lifted brown spice component. The finish has more acid than any Viognier I have ever tasted. I think we opened this way too soon. This wine has at least 10 years before it is mature.

An old friend, we have been buying this rose for close to 20 vintages. This is what rose is supposed to taste like. They seem to raise the bar almost every vintage, and this one is at least as good and probably better than anything previous. The vineyards and the winery only exist to make rose. The color is perfect Provence salmon pink. The nose is sharp and expressive strawberry, roses and minerals. Splendid large mouth feel. The red fruit is completely balanced with appropriate acid. The terroir shows influence with minerals and shale. Super crisp finish that still allows the strawberry to show through.

A very impressive improvement over what I tasted in the 2009 offering of this wine. This one has a seamless streak of concentrated, juicy fruit from lips to finish. The nose has brooding, almost stewed like dark fruit aroma. The fruit on the palate ranges from mulled to candied cherry, blueberry, plum and red raspberry. Lively, good solid mouth feel. Nicely balanced and integrated tannins, oak, acid and alcohol. Really strong finish of spicy maraschino cherry.

I agree this is very decent value for a $12 Pinot Noir. Just like their Petit Sirah program, this Pinot is a solid, well conceived, almost distinctive wine that doesn't blow you away with layers of complexity, but hits most of the points we expect with Pinot. The nose and palate are full of expressive, bright fruit like plum and cherry. There is a spicy sharpness from the lips trough the finish. Decent, appropriate acid. A hint of oak. A bit of sappy evergreen and graphite with the red fruit on the finish.

Really nothing special, but also not too bad for around $10. The fruit is authentic, ripe, typical Monterrey County long hang time, deep sunshine lemon meets apple and pear. Clean and well made if not overly exciting. Crisp acid while still buttery and creamy. Some vanilla from oak. A bit rustic on the finish which leaves a crisp lemondrop impression.

As my palate has developed, my appreciation for this type of Pinot has subsided. Always under $10, and from a non noteworthy Pinot growing area this red wine is not a disaster, but also not very inspiring. We poured it through a vinturi, and swirled like crazy to get to the point where it is OK, Light to moderate magenta color. Candied nose hard to discern as Pinot. The palate is mildly tannic, and well acidified as we would expect for a Pinot. The fruit is a little artificial, and the mid palate a little weak, but I have had lots worse expressions of this grape.

This is a superb example of the potential for great Syrah grown and made in California. A vibrant, rich and concentrated wine with ripe explosive dark fruit nose, full bodied palate and lingering complex finish. Deep glass and teeth staining purple color. Fruit first, especially blueberry preserves on the palate, but tons of secondary supporting flavors like licorice, rum, raisins, brown spice and lead pencil. Plenty of medium heavy toast oak. Still very young with gritty tannins and awesome balancing acid. Drinks fine now but has a long life ahead.

It takes a minute or two in the for this one to open up. The first tastes is rustic and rough, but then: whoosh, there is the expected big rush of maraschino cherry. This Pinot has some real backbone and structure, yet overall is very civilized and mellow. Swirling and time in the glass really make a difference, could really use a decant. Deep, rich, brooding dark fruit with nice balancing acidity.

This is what can happen in Monterrey with a great growing year. This Pinot starts off with a very dark, deeply extracted, concentrated color. The grapes achieved perfect ripeness, and with minimal intervention wine making a quick hitting, deep rich, juicy red and dark fruit impression on the palate. Minimal use of oak brings a Pinot experience. Still some youthful tannins. Nicely balanced and integrated. A bit of a sappy influence to the red fruit on the finish.

This is a very exciting white wine. The nose and palate have explosive and vibrant floral and juicy fruit characteristics. Freshness just jumps out of the glass. Like most wines from Portugal we have never heard of and certainly cannot pronounce the grape varietals. The package gets the 90 point score simply because of the harmony and integration. Big fruit is capably balanced by big acid. The flavors on the palate are just as intense as the nose. Layers of citrus and orchard fruit with melon.

Kind of a compromise New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Those expecting big herbal grassiness will be disappointed. Those expecting a "red hot" spiciness will be rewarded. The color is relatively clear for a NZ Sauvignon. There is also a somewhat atypical minor spritz visible on the glass and noticeable on the palate. Definitely a hint of that herbal spiciness only a NZ Sauvignon can do. Big, but not all that big acid. Lacks the renegade explosiveness of a really high scoring NZ Sauvignon, but we are gladly going to finish this bottle.

Wow, this is the real thing. Almost 8 years off the vine and still needing at least 5 more years to reach it's peak drinkability. Even after about an hour decant, still very much in it's "dumb" stage where the fruit refuses to surface. It is easy to project it's potential as some serious red raspberry attempts to break loose amid a sea of very young tannins and serious new French oak. The structure, character, and fruit that releases is tremendously focused with an elegance instead of power. Still raw oak and tannins needing more bottle age.
