We enjoyed this wine over a two hour period. The wine demonstrated a broad mix of fruits which evolved over the time. Soft and subtle, requiring focus to really study what was going on. Medium body with a remarkably long finish (considering how subtle it was).

I purchased this a little over a decade ago for what now seems like a bargain at $1,600. I'd repeat at that price, but don't think I'd go for the $4k that seems to be the prevailing market price today.

Decanted for 2hrs. Decadent and rich yet incredibly elegant with plenty of finesse. Legendary.

1989 in the Rheingau (Eltville, Rheingau, Germany): A spectacular bottle of 1989. Nose of herbs, tar, malt. Creamy palate, densely textured, smoke, lots of fruit left. Unbelievably fine and elegant.

Almost black in color. Monumental in the glass. The nose is complex with truffles, red berries, smoke and bay leaves. On the palate this is granite-like and years from its peak but with some coaxing shows all of the potential of this powerful wine. Deep flavors of black cherries, exotic spices and firm, smoky minerals flow over the tongue in this gorgeously delineated and layered wine. Big and burly but also fine and elegant at the same time, this feels like a coiled animal of immense power and grace holding back its secrets for another day. This will need many years but there is no doubting that it will take its place among the greatest vintages of this wine. 98+

An un-equalable elegance. Read the other member's comments for details. I just need to add that this wine is still a baby and just entering its stride.

When you drink the 1989, you will understand what the Petrus worship is all about.

this is my first, and possibly only, experience with Petrus....my wife splurged on a bottle years ago when it was less than half the price it is today. Valentine's Day seemed like the perfect occasion to share it.

we were both immediately impressed by the aromas of black cherry and truffles which came roaring up from the glass, but the real enjoyment came from drinking it. the richness of the red and black fruit is captivating, i would guess is has not lost any intensity based on the freshness and concentration of this bottle - it's neither primary nor mature but in that perfect place and the finish lasts.

there is a tannic edge that tells you you're drinking an 89 not a 90, which i happen to enjoy - we decanted the wine for an hour and it was more present at first. after 30 minutes it dissipated to a level where i thought it was in perfect balance.

not sure if or when i will come across another great vintage of Petrus, but at least this one didn't disappoint my very high expectations

ps...i just read the other reviewer's tasting note and was surprised at how consistent it was with my experience. this is indeed a special wine and I'm glad to see it's consistently brilliant considering the investment one would need to make
