The maturity level of various bottles of ‘89 Haut-Brion varies a lot. This bottle, purchased near release, was one of the younger versions. Deeply saturated ruby, no orange. A little shy on the nose. Powerful core of intense cassis fruit. Long. Not very complex yet but that will surely come.

Again disappointed for what this should be. Faded and a little TCA, maybe the bottle.

Deep and so long. Cedar, spice, underfloor. Bramble fruit. Fruit beginning to recede, balanced now between primary and tertiary. Fully integrated structure. After 2 hours this showed TCA and would had a much lower score at that point. I guess this was only a touch of TCA as normally any TCA ruins a bottle. Never had TCA affect a bottle in this way.

Blind with 89LMHB. More elegant and broader, silky soft, meadow grass, violet flowers, current, gamey. Rather easy but this bottle was not decanted as much/as ready. 97+

This is the last of 6 bottles that I owned. Only posted notes on 5 of them I believe. Anyway, opened 3 hours before drinking. Poured a little into a glass. Cork was perfect even after all this time, a lesson that American wine makers could learn.

Nice garnet color in glass, very little bricking. Nose is pencil shaving and some raspberries. Drank over an hour with dinner. This wine seems to be fading from the glory that I once drank. The main issue is the fruit on the finish. The tannins and acid is all great, with pencil shavings nose this wine is known for. The magic of this wine in my opinion, was it finished with a light touch of fruit, that made you believe there is a God. However, that fruit is fading has been over the last 4-5 yrs. Now this wine is top notch still and 94 is a good score in my book, it just isn’t a 99 point wine anymore. Wish I had 34 more years left so I could buy some more and age it all over again, for another run. Super fun.

Beautiful nose perfectly balanced between fruit (blackcurrant) and secondary aromas of tobacco and leather. Very smooth tanins, a joy to drink. You can meditate on it for hours but don’t have to. So easy to drink!

Could last another 20 years easily.

Decanted two hours. Dark fruit, tannins resolved. Some leather and mushroom taste with smoke. Wish it was a religious experience but it wasnt at least today. Have two more bottles to try in the near future.

Today it is enjoyable for the purity and beauty of its mature black and blue fruit. Tannins are surprisingly mellow. And not the ultimate in complexity or grip. This bottle purchased near release and in excellent condition was more advanced than any of the previous bottles I have tried.

My third time with the great 1989 Haut Brion and I'm very glad to say that this was open and singing. However, if the last was obdurate and closed, this one was perhaps best just after it was decanted. A glorious panoply of black cherry, cigar, hickory, mineral, and cedar, voluminous yet detailed on the nose and palate, expanding endlessly in the mouth.

A challenge tasted blind - smells of deep, black-cherry Merlot yet it has structure that surely must be imparted by a substantial amount of Cabernet Sauvignon. So in retrospect, Pessac should have been obvious. This was simply so tight, though after the fact I did manage to appreciate some empyreumatic Pessac notes.

Last time I drank this wine was 2 years ago, side-by-side with 1959 HB. Compared to the 59', the 89' was shut down and youthful, really demanding 2-3 hours to open up while the 59' was immediately perfect and ready to go, offering a glimpse of what the 89' might look like in 30 years. With that recent memory intact, drinking this 375ml was so interesting -- of course the smaller format has sped up the aging process, and perhaps as a result this bottle tonight was showing perfectly right away. I've tasted 89' HB a few times now, and this was for sure the best example I've ever had, thanks to the smaller format, perhaps? Seems to be a testament to how much more time this has left to develop in standard format. The 89' HB is indeed a perfect bottle of wine -- as good as it gets.

the last flight of the night was the matchup of the 89 La Mission and Haut Brion. The La <ission was the clear winner at first sip after both had been decanted about 2 hours but the HB was catching up quickly in the glass. We should have given them another hour of air. The La miss is prettier, more seductive and is catching up the to the HB over time, however both wines are essentially perfect and it does not get better in 80's bordeaux as of now. Thanks Jim and Rob, the table was split over which was the winner. These will live on longer than i do.

A beautiful bottle of this showing equal to the great '89 La Miss alongside. It's a matter of style as the La Miss is deeper and more concentrated but the HB slightly more refined and complex. This is loaded with classic notes of smoky dark red fruits, warm bricks and a remarkable cedar/cigar, spice-box component emerging late. Fabulous and this bottle was very ready after a 4-hour decant.

2.5hr decant. Extremely concentrated, complex and profound nose. Cassis, Blackberry, dark cherry. Complex tertiary notes of sweet tobacco leaf, unsmoked cigar, a touch of cigar smoke and ash. The complexity continues showing black olives, some liquorice, safron, pepper and spice.
Wonderfully long finish showing all of the layers of complexity.

This was a fantastic experience and honour to try. I did not give it 99 or 100pts, as it ultimately did not feel literally "perfect" and not improvable to warrant 100pts, and it didn't quite have the raw profound emotion I associate with the few 99pts wines I have experienced.

Regardless, I must emphasise what a great wine this is!

Slightly lighter colour than the Lafite, bright ruby but more powerful and intense nose. Still immensely refined- dark fruits, leather again, tobacco. Very powerful palate, dark fruits, plum, vanilla and spices. Incredible complexity combined with finesse on a very rare scale. I think this is as good as Bordeaux gets, basically, flawless!

Decanted. Black currant, meaty, rose, violet, game, cherry, chocolate, caramel, citrus, blackberry, primrose, meadow grass. Tight, tannic, strong, minty, bitter, strong, baked, structured. Rare to have more than one perfect wines in the same dinner. In fact, two in tough competition for my red wine of the year but alas the d'Auvenay edged out just a little for my personal taste. 100

Finally the ‘89 Haut-Brion has reached maturity from well stored bottles. The color though is a bit alarming with a lot of rust and even brown at the rim. There’s more resemblance than usual to La Mission Haut-Brion from the same vintage since both are extremely concentrated and über Grave-y with lots of smoke and tobacco, excellent acidity and firm tannins. Two glorious great Bordeaux.

Perfection (Tøyen, Oslo): Wow, wow, wow.

After a superb bottle of Cheval 47 did not compell me to grant it a perfect score, I feared I would never be moved to sign off a 100 points to any wine.

This wine, however, defined the word flawless. Immediately after pulling the cork, it was clear I was in the presence of greatness.

An explosion of a nose, I could smell it clearly 25 cm away from the glass. It featured blackberry, blackcurrant, so much mineral, sous bois, umami notes, freshly picked stone mushroom, clove, white pepper, shoe polish, leather and vine smoke. My god, I literally smelled this in silence for hours into the night..

Full-ish bodied, at first bitter, then a growing sweetness before an intense coda of forest floor and nuts.
Perfectly integrated tannins, still a small bite, countered by on point acidity, keeping it so balanced and fresh. Not at all heavy, power and intensity without any heaviness.
Also here blackberry, as well as plums, a crazy mineralité, wet soil. The finish is literally endless with sweet orange rind and cherry pits.

This was firing on all cylinders until the bitter end, (2AM, as I and my co-host sat 2 hours after the guests had left, drinking the sediment from the bottle, never wanting to let this experience end..) not at all worried it's going to fade, but for me, absolute perfect maturity now.

What an experience, quasi religious..

DnP: moderate sediment; ruby color with moderate bricking; expansive bouquet evolving over an hour, tertiary notes of soil, smoke from a fire with cedar logs added, baseball rosin, gravel, still some dark berry; smooth sweet tannins with plenty of weight still on the palate; lasting finish; wonderfully satisfying; sipped with generous friends and cheese and crackers.
