1989 Château Haut-BrionPessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more |
4/14/2024 - sdr Likes this wine: 94 pointsThe maturity level of various bottles of ‘89 Haut-Brion varies a lot. This bottle, purchased near release, was one of the younger versions. Deeply saturated ruby, no orange. A little shy on the nose. Powerful core of intense cassis fruit. Long. Not very complex yet but that will surely come. |

3/30/2024 - Philip67 Likes this wine: 95 pointsDeep and so long. Cedar, spice, underfloor. Bramble fruit. Fruit beginning to recede, balanced now between primary and tertiary. Fully integrated structure. After 2 hours this showed TCA and would had a much lower score at that point. I guess this was only a touch of TCA as normally any TCA ruins a bottle. Never had TCA affect a bottle in this way. |

Cork was perfect even after all this time, a lesson that American wine makers could learn. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

12/14/2023 - DF@GCL Likes this wine: 97 pointsBeautiful nose perfectly balanced between fruit (blackcurrant) and secondary aromas of tobacco and leather. Very smooth tanins, a joy to drink. You can meditate on it for hours but don’t have to. So easy to drink! |

11/25/2023 - sdr Likes this wine: 94 pointsToday it is enjoyable for the purity and beauty of its mature black and blue fruit. Tannins are surprisingly mellow. And not the ultimate in complexity or grip. This bottle purchased near release and in excellent condition was more advanced than any of the previous bottles I have tried. |

However, if the last was obdurate and closed, this one was perhaps best just after it was decanted. A glorious panoply of black cherry, cigar, hickory, mineral, and cedar, voluminous yet detailed on the nose and palate, expanding endlessly in the mouth. |

So in retrospect, Pessac should have been obvious. This was simply so tight, though after the fact I did manage to appreciate some empyreumatic Pessac notes. |

11/13/2023 - joshabramson Likes this wine: 100 pointsLast time I drank this wine was 2 years ago, side-by-side with 1959 HB. Compared to the 59', the 89' was shut down and youthful, really demanding 2-3 hours to open up while the 59' was immediately perfect and ready to go, offering a glimpse of what the 89' might look like in 30 years. With that recent memory intact, drinking this 375ml was so interesting -- of course the smaller format has sped up the aging process, and perhaps as a result this bottle tonight was showing perfectly right away. I've tasted 89' HB a few times now, and this was for sure the best example I've ever had, thanks to the smaller format, perhaps? Seems to be a testament to how much more time this has left to develop in standard format. The 89' HB is indeed a perfect bottle of wine -- as good as it gets. |

10/4/2023 - ricknat1 Likes this wine: 100 pointsthe last flight of the night was the matchup of the 89 La Mission and Haut Brion. The La <ission was the clear winner at first sip after both had been decanted about 2 hours but the HB was catching up quickly in the glass. We should have given them another hour of air. The La miss is prettier, more seductive and is catching up the to the HB over time, however both wines are essentially perfect and it does not get better in 80's bordeaux as of now. Thanks Jim and Rob, the table was split over which was the winner. These will live on longer than i do. |

9/29/2023 - dream Likes this wine: 97 pointsA beautiful bottle of this showing equal to the great '89 La Miss alongside. It's a matter of style as the La Miss is deeper and more concentrated but the HB slightly more refined and complex. This is loaded with classic notes of smoky dark red fruits, warm bricks and a remarkable cedar/cigar, spice-box component emerging late. Fabulous and this bottle was very ready after a 4-hour decant. |

7/28/2023 - remyworldpeace Likes this wine: 98 points2.5hr decant. Extremely concentrated, complex and profound nose. Cassis, Blackberry, dark cherry. Complex tertiary notes of sweet tobacco leaf, unsmoked cigar, a touch of cigar smoke and ash. The complexity continues showing black olives, some liquorice, safron, pepper and spice. |

Very powerful palate, dark fruits, plum, vanilla and spices. Incredible complexity combined with finesse on a very rare scale. I think this is as good as Bordeaux gets, basically, flawless! |

Tight, tannic, strong, minty, bitter, strong, baked, structured. Rare to have more than one perfect wines in the same dinner. In fact, two in tough competition for my red wine of the year but alas the d'Auvenay edged out just a little for my personal taste. 100 |

6/24/2023 - sdr wrote: 97 pointsFinally the ‘89 Haut-Brion has reached maturity from well stored bottles. The color though is a bit alarming with a lot of rust and even brown at the rim. There’s more resemblance than usual to La Mission Haut-Brion from the same vintage since both are extremely concentrated and über Grave-y with lots of smoke and tobacco, excellent acidity and firm tannins. Two glorious great Bordeaux. |

6/4/2023 - dafmd Likes this wine: 97 pointsDnP: moderate sediment; ruby color with moderate bricking; expansive bouquet evolving over an hour, tertiary notes of soil, smoke from a fire with cedar logs added, baseball rosin, gravel, still some dark berry; smooth sweet tannins with plenty of weight still on the palate; lasting finish; wonderfully satisfying; sipped with generous friends and cheese and crackers. |
