Azienda Agricola Rivetto is a 4th generation Piemonte wine making family situated in the eastern hills of Serralunga d’Alba. The family entered the area’s wine trade in 1902, buying and selling both wine and grapes. Today they have 37 acres of vineyards, all organically farmed, in a top section of Barolo.
The Rivetto story began in Alba when great-grandfather Giovanni opened a shop that became a primary trading post for wine and grapes in region. By 1922 the family business evolved from merchant to wine producer under grandfather Ercole, who insisted on the use of only the highest quality Langhe grapes. The family business expanded in 1938 with the purchase of Tenuta Loirano and its vineyards in the Serralunga and Sinio hills. After decades of hard work and planning, in 1970 father Sergio was able to build a modern winery at their Loirano location, planting new vineyards to expand production.
Today the winery is run by the Sergio’s son, Enrico Rivetto. Under his leadership the winery’s portfolio includes Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo. The Barolo range includes a classic Serralunga Barolo, a single vineyard Barolo Briccolina, and a Barolo Riserva. In recent years Enrico has taken on the revitalization of an indigenous white variety, Nascetta, which neared extinction until a small group of producers rediscovered it in the 1990s.
In 2015 Rivetto released its first sparkling Nebbiolo, Kaskal, another passion of Enrico’s. Kaskal is part of the Nebbione project; a unique winemaking process followed by a small group of producers using the once discarded tips of Nebbiolo. Those tips yield the most acidity, making them ideal for a sparkling wine.
The winery’s evolution, like its wines, continues. The family’s minimalistic approach in the vineyards (using zero synthetic chemicals or fertilizers) was formally recognized with its recent organic certification. After his 2015 launch of Kaskal, Enrico won’t slow down, moving his attention to the installation of two new vineyards of Nebbiolo and Nascetta in the nearby village of Sinio.
