Wine Discount Center tasting notes - Jan 2011

The 2005 Haut Bergey [is] at a very exciting point in its life. While the experts expect these wines to drink well through 2025 or beyond, both of these wines are now in what we'll call the 'pre-maturity' stage. What this means is that, while they are still young, they can offer an immense amount of pleasure for those who own a very important tool - a decanter!

If you open these bottles and take an immediate sip, you'll be impressed by their balance, but will miss out on much of their power, nuance, finesse and silkiness. Let these wines breathe in a wide decanter for an hour, and you will be absolutely blown away by the true beauty and pleasure that will come from the glass.

Priced at $33.99, the 2005 Haut Bergey is a serious bottle of wine and a very serious value. We tasted it last month and were knocked out by the sheer pleasure that we got from this wine. We tasted it along with 11 other 2005 Bordeaux and, more so than any of the others, this wine put big smiles on our faces. We scored it 92 points, which incidentally was the same score that Robert Parker gave it when he last tasted it. It is exciting for us to be able to offer a wine that shows the beauty, character and compelling nature of the 2005 vintage for such a reasonable price!

The 2005 Haut Bergey is a very serious bottle of wine. Powerful and well structured, it displays copious amounts of dark red and dark black fruits and gripping, well integrated tannins. When we opened a bottle of this wine last month, we found it to be good when the cork was first popped but to be absolutely outstanding the next day. (And the day after that too!) We really loved this stuff, and think that you will too. Make sure, though, to give it an hour in a broad based decanter so that you can enjoy its full potential!

Haut Bergey has come on very strong in recent vintages, and this 2005 is a serious value. Though it will be very hard to resist now, this is a cellar worthy wine - easily capable of being laid down for another 15+ years! On the Wine Discount Center scale, this rates a very solid 92-Points.
