February 21, 2011 - Tasted 12-19-10 at restaurant dinner. 100% Zin from a small vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles near Templeton. Intense nose of fig & ultraripe fruit - like blackberries soaked in port- and a noticeable wet earth/wet gravel/wet cardboard element, plus baking spices. Also alcohol vapors from the high octane; this one is 16.5% ABV. A relative who is not terribly discerning noticed the wet earth aromas & labelled it the "scents of an excavation site" (he is in construction). On the palate, it is a classic big jammy zin, with hint of white pepper [not much], tons of fruit, & a noticeable flinty/mineral/metallic note on the finish. Over a half hour the wet cardboard aromas blew off and left the ripe fruit scents - blackberry jam/blackberry pie plus a chunk of vanilla. Was an improvement. Palate remained consistent as did the metallic/minerally element in the finish. Suggest drinking within the next 2 years.
