March 11, 2014 - From 37,5cl; uniform leakage along cork to capsule has caused drops of brown gunk to form a kind of seal under the foil. Nature sometimes finds its way. Less thrilling than I remember from my previous (75cl) bottle, this is nonethless a regal Hochheimer. Fresh, almost saline scent; slender pricklingly acidic entry with lime-mineral intensity rather than the apricot/tropical fruit I was expecting; the acidity persists through the linear, fresh mid-palate on to the immensely long, tingling, quite bitterly mineral finish. Beautifully mature, but no hurry. 91P
I always try to buy a few halves of my favourite wines, partly in the hope that they'll give a kind of preview of what to expect from the 75cl bottles, partly just to have something nice to drink with dinner on evenings alone. But more and more I am struck by the frequency with which I experience larger formats as distinctly superior (and as I very rarely consume more than half a normal bottle on my own, it can't just be the influence of alcohol).1,342 views
