Community Tasting Note

  • joshbryer Does not like this wine:

May 30, 2014 - Obviously not to my taste, as I'm completely contrary to the notes here as well as others at the tasting....

Sweet red fruit on the nose, lots of heat. I felt this was a bit bretty as well. Total mess of a wine dominated by alcohol and muddled overripe, sweet flavors.

To be fair, I don't score any of the wines that I taste...no knock on doing so, just not my thing.

6/1/14, 8:34 PM - I think this wine needs years. The 2006 are just beginning to touch drinkability. I had the 2010 Chaupin on a dare, so to speak. It was all sweet Grenache fruit, that held together for a bit over 2 hours then fell completely to pieces into a hot, acidic, tannic mess that was completely disjointed. The VV is even more in need of time.

Many love Janasse, but I don't think they are near the top of the CdP for me at least. I like a good dose of Mouvedre in mine and mouvedre, while a touch bretty, needs time and air time to be a great drinking wine. Thanks for the notes. Best to be honest how you like or dislike a wine. I think the Janasse is very over priced and over rated, compared to Clos du Papes, in the same price range or less.

6/1/14, 10:30 PM - I didn't until I had a 2003 Pegau a few years back. Ripe and opulent, the alcohol was completely in check by the lush fruit, spices, hoisin and five spice... a realm of flavors. Some of the cool years are also better to start with like 2004 or the lean 2005. I still really only go for Pegau, Beaucastel and Clos du Papes, but they need a lot of aging or I don't really get excited. I am definitely not a Grenache junkie, except I am okay with lower priced Spanish Grenache or Priorat. It balances out the rest of my wine cellar. Its also best when served with food that goes well with it. If you like whites, the CdP mix of Marsanne, Roussanne is great and CdR Blanc that mixes in a big amount of viognier and Cinsault for acidity. Floral, filled with alcohol, you need to watch how much you drink as they are some of the few wines that leave me with a hangover. I am a Bordeaux junkie at heart with vintage Champagne, Burgundy PN and Chard, Italian reds from Tuscany, Veneto, Piedimonte and Siciliy or Campania. WA state Syrah and some Bdx Blends. Less Napa than ever before, but some select Cabs and Merlot from the mountains. wA Merlot is good too. Then there is the dessert wine addiction, and riesling, dry whites of Alsace. I like having a balanced cellar but its taken almost 7 years to fill it properly and CdR works for grilling burgers or chops outdoors. Sometimes it works with BBQ with CdP or Northern Rhone Syrah. so much different than other parts. If its not your thing, it might be years later. Just be weary of the more modern styles that fought a lot of over ripe Grenache. CdP lets the maker use 13 varietals and the best makers take advantage of it, and it needs time. Clairette, a white with great florals, cinsault adds the necessary acid in ripe vintages. Brett often comes from the bacon scented smoky Mouvedre, and the Kirsch, Blackberry and peppercorns from the Syrah, but Grenache sometimes adds to much of that herbs de Provence which can be a little weedy, but when it ages right you can get some interesting anise, and hoisin sauce. A few old red burgs have had this too and those are the only places this seems to work well. Peking Duck works really well with aged CdP as well, as does many small birds, if thats something you would like to explore. I hadn't for a long time. Now Duck is welcome on my plate, but TW still is not a fan. she like bone dry white meat chicken and thats as far as bird go other than Turkey. She's not a fan of CdP but likes sweeter inexpensive wines. A cheap date....
