June 29, 2014 - 92? Yes. Just an awesome bottle vintage to vintage.

When we began to expand our drinking experience we tried Spanish wines but thought they were too tight and astringent, so we gave up on them and I went down the path of busting on Spanish wines, unfortunately, and to my eventual chagrin.

Then one day, Bonnie was getting her hair done and I walked to a nearby tapas joint in the west end of Richmond (it's gone now, couldn't sustain. The tapas joint not west end Richmond :), and it was there, where they had a giant paella iron, that I sat down at he bar and randomly order this wine, a 2010 I think.

    Wow!

Later, Bonnie arrived from her hair appointment and had a sip...she loved it!

And that's when we learned that Spanish wine can be fabuwus!

The owner then recommended a wine that ended up being about $30 at Total Wine, and we were like, "uh, not so much", which just goes to show, you have to find your own way.

But the Juan Gil was enough to get us exploring Spanish wines, and we're very grateful we did. That's how we discovered Toros...different story.

But Juan Gil continues to impress us, vintage after vintage. Has the depth, fruit, acid, minerals, balance, and finish we love in red wine. Can't find any fault with it, considering the price.

Glad my shortsightedness was derailed by serendipity.

3/29/16, 7:02 AM - I agree wholeheartedly. I found this the way I find many wines - by asking the owner of a wine store what he thought was great value. That was five years ago and this has become my go-to wine in unfamiliar wine stores. It's widely available in NYC at between $15 and $19 and i am yet to find anything remotely as good under $20.

If you like this its worth looking for the 18 Meses (blue label). Other wines that are plumbing similar veins include "Coup de Grace", Mollydooker's "The Boxer", Venge's "Scout's Honor"
