Community Tasting Note

  • ElSol Does not like this wine: 80 points

March 16, 2016 - I opened this bottle tonight, thinking I was opening my '04 bottle. The color is opaque purple, with perhaps a little bricking. It was heavily sedimented, leaving lots of sediment behind in the bottle and the filter of my decanter The nose was almost nonexistent- all I could smell was alcohol. On the palette, the fruit was subdued and there's an extremely tart acidity- too tart to the point of tasting harsh and artificial. Its been decanting an hour and doesn't seem to be improving. I went ahead and opened the '04 bottle and already its much more promising than this one. I'm guessing this was not as good a year. I'll update if further decanting improves this one.

3/16/16, 9:52 PM - Could it be corked? Your note is an outlier, the last note sounding shut down was from 3 years ago. TCA can flatten a red wine (no nose, subdued fruit, the remaining acidity throwing things out of balance) without being overt like it would be in a white.

3/17/16, 12:31 PM - It didn't smell corked- though I suppose it could have been damaged- I purchased from an online retailer and had it delivered in the winter, but you never know how it was kept before I bought it. The only off taste I noted was the extremely tart acidity. I agree it seems an outlier compared to previous reviews.

3/19/16, 7:30 AM - I experienced the same tartness, but it subsided after about 1.5 hours in the decanter. I think it's a great wine that is still too young.
