June 19, 2004 - Decanted for 1.5 hours. Tasted about 3 weeks after an earlier bottle, this one shows more of the characteristics one would expect of a 2000 St. Julien at this stage. Considerably more austere than the previous bottle, it shows an unmistakable nose of cassis, clay minerals, and graphite. In the mouth, the slightly austere tannins and minerality dominate at this stage, with the ripe fruit that was so prominent in the earlier bottle taking a back seat. The structure for aging and the class of this wine are still evident, but it definitely needs to sit for another 6 years or so.
