Offputtingly reductive on opening, but once the sulphurous notes dissipate it's extremely appealing, with strawberry fruit leading the charge. The palate is knockout: detailed and delicious, resolutely middleweight with delicate, concentrated red fruit and a refreshing character.

Statuesque. Have you ever looked at a pile of rocks and thought “I wonder what those would taste like if I ran them through a juicer?” Well, drink this wine and find out. I have never had a wine so aggressively mineral. Sharp edges, sculpted from stone, unforgiving, angular. We decanted and let it sit for a couple hours, which softened it a little, bringing out more herbal and tropical notes. Don’t let the 9g/l residual fool you—this is very dry. A lot of phenolic bitterness on the finish. Think quinine, grapefruit pith, etc. Very green on the nose—would have said Gruner.

Recommend letting this sit a while longer and air out thoroughly before drinking.

nose: old apple, brioche
palate: old apple, almond, brioche,

Exhibits what I'm gathering is a Castagnier signature of pure, deep, almost artificially dense fruit. Here it's complemented by darker coffee and animal tones. Spherical, rich on the palate, smooth with acidity lifting the finish. It's not a style that truly excites me but there's no question it's really good stuff

Ripe and spicy, resolved red and blue fruit on the nose with a satisfying oak signature. Excellent purity here. Velvety on the palate, some chew at the end. It's straightforwardly delicious even if it currently lacks a sense of real delicacy and complexity

Got the window right I reckon. The core is 'fruity' but well surrounded by soft furry tannin and game. I suspect the fruity intensity is tailing off but structually plenty of presence.

Incredible assertiveness to the nose, both range and lift: sharply defined Pinot fruit, angular but wrapped in a blanket of luxurious depth. Accomplishes the high wire of serious density on the palate with a sense of levity: beautifully textured with brightening acidity woven throughout. I note early professional reviews of this found a stemmy, pinched character - all I can say is that it must have evolved enormously in bottle because this screams Grand Cru. Would happily pay the asking price for this.

This is an absolute joy to drink. How did they pack it all in there at under 13%??? Cali Syrah masterclass.

Nope did not like this at all. Opens with some promise: a leafy cabernet character, green pepper, sweet herbal tones, blackcurrant, strawberry vanilla. A sense of restraint and detail. The palate isn't good - insipid and tangy. There's no hint of it on the nose but it tastes of wet cardboard, not sure I've experienced this before. It has to be flawed, right?

Dark-toned, spicy, earthy and compact. Blackberry, raspberry, cherry palate - shows good fruit but little else and it's slightly pinched, blocky. Comes across tight and simple.

Rose and violet, smoky strawberry on the nose, an appealing perfumed purity. Tannins are overwhelming and dominate proceedings, both in terms of structure and bitterness on the palate - I wonder if they'll recede and allow the fruit to express in time?

Red apple, ripe cherry, eucalyptus nose with floral overtones. Precise and correct. Approachable on the palate with lots of powdery tannin and a little bitter kick. Really quite pure and delicious - some of these '17s are showing really well. Not one for the long term but great value at around £30

Very nice sweet dessert wine. Striking golden colour being 10 years old yet still refreshing, albeit sweet.

Menthol, mint, and red fruit. Very firm structure, acid more than tannin. A well made wine - just pair it with rich foods at this point. A Nebbiolo Langhe I had recently from this producer had a similar style. Well crafted, firm acidic backbone.

Very nice! Company duck dinner very well.
Soft, berry with slight after tone sweetness.

Incredible nose of violet, mint, pure concentrated strawberry, earth and a sweet decaying note. Quite sweet and full on the palate, moderate juicy acidity. Tannins are spiky but approachable, shrouded by that plump body. Tasty but a bit of a blunt instrument, lacks finesse

Cab Shiraz with still lots of fruit.
Blend of 2 regions.

Plenty going on here. Cherry, strawberry, chalk and dried flowers. Good depth for its level and plenty of flesh overlaying a cool, stony base. Decent structural support. Balanced and certainly over-delivers.

Very good wine. Blueberries, black tea, gentle oak, and a herbaceous element. Medium bodied, and fairly gentle tannins. Really nice, early drinking style.

This strikes me as representing the mid-way point between the ‘old Wendouree’ and the new. The cool long 2002 and mild undervalued 2004 vintages presaged the more refined wines seen in the 2010s on (including the elegantly powerful 2009). The hot, unforgiving 2003 season shapes what the winemaking team could work with it, but the absence of astringent tannins, jaded overripe characters (raisins) and heat (it’s 13.2%) tells you they picked at the right time.

Brick rim to faded red, then dark core. Once you let it breathe (an hour or so) and work through the secondary walnut, caraway seeds and aniseed, surprisingly fresh fruits appear - chopped dark cherries, dark plums, blackberries - then a sprinkle of brick dust. Distinctly Wendouree that tastes 20 years old plus, yes, but gnarly or burly, no.

Palate continues the theme. Sinewy tannins snake their way through more cherry, plum, raspberry. There’s an understated darker, dry vintage port note too, reminiscent of the 03 Shiraz and older Wendouree - it complements, not dominates the other characters. Hints of beef brisket, or is that my belly saying feed me brisket with this wine? Only upper medium bodied at most that carries itself well. No heat, no edges, no teacher, but guru, yes (apologies to Van Morrison).

I’ve ranked it just below CT Outstanding, mainly relative to scores for the more prodigious vintages of this wine (2004, 2012, 2013, 2019).

The 2003 Sth Australian vintage is one at this point I’d be wary of, but this is an exception. I searched for signs of decline but found none. It’s still vibrant. The road may not go on forever but the party has yet to end (thanks Robert Earl Keen).

Artisans of Sardinia - April 2024 (London): Dark colour and a very prominent nose. Loads of tangerine and grapefruit oil that are followed by honey, apricots and marmalade. Viscous and decadent with enough acidity to make it fresh. Beautiful

Compared to the ‘16 served alongside this was obviously more complex and had a nice secondary nose of game, but was actually the weaker wine. Not as much depth on the palate as I would have hoped, a lot of ‘01s are getting tired now. Some soft fruit left on the palate. Medium finish. Still a good drink 92-93 and better drink up…

Nose: pineapple, red apple, red berries
Notes: disgorged 2022. I've always enjoyed wines from this address as they've continuously demonstrated finesse and elegance while the winemaking style of less bubbles is both subtle and intriguing. Drink superbly now. With hints of tropical fruits and red fruits this is displaying plenty of complexity and shows good characters of Pinot Noir. Drinking quite nicely now and I certainly don't feel this is too stiff or young.

This was obviously very young but drinkable. Lot’s of power on the nose and palate. Dark and brooding black fruit, nice balance. No secondary notes yet. Drink now with air for the primary phase but I would hold. 94 for now.

As always, this wine was rock solid. I believe this wine is one of starts of 1990 vintage and does not get the recognition it deserves. Tertiary notes present but no signs of this wine tiring. This wine will easily last another decade or two.

This has incredibly fine mousse and bracing acidity. This is easily in my top five champagnes I have tasted. Drinks like a grand cru white burgundy but with super fine bubbles. This wine has the structure to last easily another decade but I do not see it getting better than it is now so time to pop a cork.

Artisans of Sardinia - April 2024 (London): Just entering its drinking window and showing really well if still in its infancy. Old leather, mulberry and a light mocha note on the nose and then plenty vibrant fruit, acidity and tannin on the palate. Loads of energy here and it will evolve beautiful for 10-15 years

Second time tasting this vintage. Compared to the 2015 and 2017, this is the most elegant but could be a good sign that there is even more depth to come in the future as this could be tightly wound. Simply incredible to drink right now. Gave this an hour in the decanter. Last vintage of the original owner Foucault.

90-minute decant. Deep dark vibrant magenta color. Blackberry, dark raspberry, dried mushroom, bay leaf, toffee, and subtle fig. Smooth, dry palate. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

This is nicely aged and easy drinking. It’s got very pleasant tertiary notes. After spending several days in the Balkans, this was a nice transition back to American wine (and by “American” I mean Napa CS).
