This is a very good Chardonnay. A touch of sweetness without being buttery. A set of subtle tart notes in the background.

The other notes are accurate. As usual, do not pop and pour: needs at least two hours. Elegant and just slightly powerful.

I forgot about my note last month to not open the next of these for a while and regretted it. This initially came across as much oakier than I expect with Carlisles, partly the contrast after finishing off the last glass of a very different wine, and partly a reminder of why I thought I should give these more time. Better day 2. Wait or decant.

Typical Patricia Green nose: a mix of earth, creamy berries, some pleasant greenness and a touch of cola in the background. The mouthfeel came off a little creamy, leaving me wanting a bit more acidity.

color shows a bit of age, but still youthfull. Nose a bit reduced initially, then opens up with ripe cherries, sour cherries. Graphite, some mineral notes. Juicy and some bloody notes. On the palate is fresh, with nice structure, blue fruits and ripe cherries, but with sustained acidity. Integrated tannins. Very nice Cabernet Franc.

A bit basic, but textbook brunello. Cherry, blueberry, oak note with gamey, jammy taste and relatively long finish. Not quite interesting for the name of master of Piedmonte but surely enjoyable.

Enjoyed it. You can say it's a typical New Zealand SB, passionfruit, guava, pineapple, and grapefruit aromas with layers of tropical fruit flavors attached to crisp minerality. However, it feels far less generic and displays vibrant herbal energy which makes this wine truly enjoyable. I liked the lingering saltiness as well. Great value. Ultimate crowd pleaser.

Fourchaume, being one of the most famous premier cru in Chablis, definitely has a huge number of followers. If Jean Dauvissat’s Montmains is king, Fourchaume will be the undisputed queen in terms of characteristics. Aroma of soft and elegance strike within the first whiff, along with very mellow and easy-going bouquet. Palate is obviously a big leap forward compared to all the village classification, and rightfully belonged to the premier cru category. A sip and the viscosity are undisputedly much better than a village wine, with great acidity balance, as well as softness and elegance coupled with power. With only 2047 bottles produced for vintage 2021, our allocation for this queen was rather pathetic, thus we treasure every single bottle of this gem we possess.

Ditto the previous several TNs. It has some creaminess, yes, but not a round, coating mouthfeel, nicely balanced with acidity, nice ripe orchard fruit. Domestic, yes, leaning Burgundian. My first experience with this producer and I want to try more.

Bas de Fourchaume is actually located below the Premier Cru Fourchaume, and thus the Lieu-Dit classification. Even though it’s on the lower hillside, it still benefited from the same sun exposure as the premier cru. The vineyards are planted back in 1988. Bear in mind vintage 2021 is a frost vintage, a lot of vines are badly hit, thus the production is vastly reduced. We have very little allocation across the board. Only 2050 bottles were produced for this vintage. However, unlike other producers, due to Jean Dauvissat excellent wine-making skills, the quality isn’t compromised with the frost. Bouquet is rather mild and soft, very atypical Chablis style, accompanied by buttery aroma, implying the oak profile is great. As expected, the wine has gone through a long process of maturation in both stainless steel and 600 liters oak barrels. Mouthfeel is surprisingly powerful fruits with great expression, I like the multi-layer complexity this wine bring forth. Very enjoyable, highly recommended!

This is a new series of Chablis wines coming from Jean Dauvissat, I’m honored to have a chance to taste it upon arrival. The town of La Chapelle Vaupelteigne owns a very rich diversity of terroir. The complexity and diversity of these terroirs gather richness and minerality. The terroir observation is spot on, as the wine is definitely very rich in flavor compared to other Chablis village wines, while maintaining a good balance of acidity. The wine has gone through a long process of maturation in both stainless steel and 600 liters oak barrels. Only a total production of around 2,050 bottles for vintage 2021.

This is a new series of Chablis wines coming from Jean Dauvissat, I’m honored to have a chance to taste it upon arrival. The town of Milly is part of the historical vineyard of Chablis. This 3-hectare site is planted with vines of average age of 50 years old. The wine has gone through a long process of maturation in both stainless steel and 600 liters oak barrels. Only a total production of around 1,400 bottles for vintage 2021. The bouquet was funky, I thought I smelled earth as well as chemicals, perhaps the remnants of fertilizer found its way into the grapes? Content was affirmatively Chablis with good amount of minerality, coupled with elevated acidity, leaning towards slight sourness and mainly driven by lemon fruits.

Full-bodied and flamboyant, with lush dark fruit, spice and chocolate. Good in this style, and well-priced to boot.

If there’s a Chablis village wine that I highly recommend, I will no doubt point you to Jean Dauvissat’s Chablis Heritage series. Tonight I had both the Chablis and Chablis Heritage side-by-side for comparison, it’s a great challenge. Heritage has a very soft and elegant aroma, like a warmly baked lemon juice. Content is also of very good quality, I noted the warmness and softness of the wine, which is very different from most Chablis. Technically, the vines that produced these grapes were 60 to 70 years of age, perhaps these vines are the game changer. Meanwhile, the Chablis version pales in both aroma and tastes. Aroma of minerals and stainless steel, while the content was much harder and stiffer with loads of minerality. It really paled when tasted next to Heritage. I strongly recommend you to try both bottles side-by-side, as I would classify Heritage as a Premier Cru level rather than a village level wine.

Colour: still very ruby, very light, with slight brown edges.
Nose: red fruit, flint, slight earthy notes, herb.
Palate: moorish, red fruit, mint, medium+ length

Excellent. Still lots of life, even for this poorly stored bottle.

my third bottle (tasted the first and second one in 2014 and 2019)

still high-tone floral, showing much less dryness comparing previous bottles. the unique flavors of farmyard, Brett are faded, but projecting a more clean, new world like Pinot with less weight and richness on palate. Delicate and refined, should enjoy it with light seasoning dishes.

Powerful and interesting, spiced apple cider style, but for my preferences it's an odd combination of high (perceived) dosage and strong oxidative/secondary development. For this style I need bone dry like Egly; this lacks drinkability for me.

Chateau Clarke versus Le Petit Haut Lafitte, Bordeaux, 2018
10 Apr 2024

I have previously reported Le Petit Haut Lafittee here, thus I won’t waste time reporting it again (2018 Le Petit Haut Lafitte by Smith Haut Lafitte | Fine Wines Pte Ltd.) Meanwhile, Chateau Clarke is also one of our favorite Cru Bourgeois, we have covered it for multiple vintages, you can read some past tasting notes to get an idea the origination of Chateau Clarke. Chateau Clarke is bold and chunky, predominantly sweet lush cherries, thanks to the heat of 2018. While Le Petit Haut Lafitte is a demure Bordeaux wine, not that it lacks fruits, in fact it’s equally bold compared to Chateau Clarke when it comes to fruits and complexity. In addition, Le Petit Haut Lafitte possesses the kind of finesse and elegance not found in Chateau Clarke. Tonight my heart goes to Le Petit Haut Lafitte as the overall winner of the dual showdown.
