Purchased this magnum at a Napa tasting room in 2012 and stored properly since. This needed about 30 minutes to fully open up. Velvety plush fruits up front led into a decently balanced wine with a nice finish. This was certainly in its prime and best consumed within the next few years. I was pleasantly surprised how good this was. It started to fade somewhat around hour 3. This paired well with northern Italian cuisine.

Decanted for 3 hours at cellar temp. Showing very well right now. Red fruit, mint, smoke, a touch of baking spice on the nose. Medium acidity, medium + tannins, medium-bodied on the palate. I paired this with braised pork short ribs and it was delicious.

First of 2 ($73.50@) from an auction lot about 2 years ago bought as a kind of tribute for dear CT friend Cyclist, who’d recently decamped to the E Coast and who is the world’s foremost apostle of CF, a varietal not always esteemed by sfwl and minimally represented in his collection. On the nose and palate, initial notes of herbaceous grassiness, which ebbed with about 30 minutes of air, sweet blue and blackberries, black currants and cherries, dark soil, chocolate, roast coffee, graphite and a hint of tobacco. Dark purple, medium to full bodied, thick legs. Medium/+ tannins and acidity, both well integrated, no heat. VG+ complexity, persistence and intensity. My first Blackbird of any sort, and in fact, I was so ignorant of the winery, I’d thought TRB was the winemaker (it’s the slightly less modern but still kinda culty Aaron Pott); I’ve had a few Quintessas and have a ‘13 Greer in the collection gather spider webs, but am equally non-knowledgeable about him as the winery. So, I had ample basis for curiosity, and while I’d not shared Cyclist’s enthusiasm for a B Dr. Crane CF, I’d adored an ‘08 Favia Cerro Sur, so maybe it was time to give the CF another chance (this is 84% CF, btw), even if it took me 2 years to pop. This more than rewarded that curiosity, needing just a short amount of time to blow off some funkiness before becoming a wine of lovely contrasts: vibrant with great concentration mixed with suavity, wonderful mouthfeel and a strong backbone, fulsome but impressively lightfooted. This makes this a great pour on its own but with plenty of starch to stand up to the loin lamb chops it accompanied. Held impeccably over 3 nights, giving the impression that it’s early drinking window, likely to hold very well, even if it’s near its apogee now, for +/- 5 years. Terrific value at my purchase price, will keep my eyes open for more. 94-95+

From magnum. Honestly, kinda meh. This is not, as I had feared, falling apart: it still has decent balance and fruit, and tannins are soft. However, it’s also fairly boring: nondescript red fruit, not much lift, not memorable. And it’s not just me: at a walk around tasting, with a few guest bottles thrown into the mix, I noticed this one (my contribution) was the least drained bottle of 4. If you’re in the mood for a Ferrari — or even a Miata — this is an Altima. On cruise control.
Score: 89. Relative to expectations: -

On the nose we got graphite, pomegranate. On the palate dark berry, toffee, plum, dark chocolate, finish black licorice

Delicious. Strong palette and nose of smoked meats, cigar box and leather but also still getting the primary red and black fruit as well. Great balance between the flavors and still has good body after 14 years. Loved it.
Red
Medium ruby color. Moderately intense aromas of ripe fruit, oak, very Napa. Dry, with elevated acidity but surprisingly modest tannins. Raspberry fruit on the palate, and maybe a little heat, although only 14.1% abv.

Consumed over several days. Cab franc really shines through and the merlot adds some nice softness to the mouthfeel. Well balanced wine that was enjoyed by all who tasted it. Still very fruitful, but secondary notes are starting to peak through. Drink now through 2030.

Nose: not much there after aerating, cherries and raisins.
Taste: a little tight. I’m going to give it some time and aeration. Wow, a lot of flavor like I thought it would be. Raisins, blueberries, black cherries with a long finish and no tannins.

Big, soft and flabby. Black and red fruits, all over done - soft but not a ton of structure. A sweet toasted oak aroma w/ black currants and raspberries. Def drink now - not getting better and probably on the down slope.

Decanted for about an hour. The wine initially came off as austere, maybe a bit hot, but with air and time became a hit. Paired with grilled ribeye, baked, potato, and salad. It initially had herbal notes on the nose, and there was a worry in the beginning that it may have lost some fruit. it initially finished a bit hot. All of that went away with time in the decanter, and it was a terrific pairing for this meal.

Giving demerits for the lack of value. Nice but very mundane for the price tag.
Red
Very dense dark fruited nose of blackberry and cassis with vanilla in the background. Similar flavors with some bitterness that went away after an hour (Popped and poured over 2 hours), lush buttery mouthfeel, surprisingly had some acidity, long finish, a very nice big bold Napa cab, wish it had more cab franc character (82% cab franc 15% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon). Definitely a crowd pleaser but not in a bad way.
Red
A little bigger structure wise than I expected, but nice.

Nose: none today
Taste: raisin, prune, berries, very smooth with a great finish. The cab franc is not over powering after being aerated. I like this wine.

Also smelling totally oxidized and pickle juice on day two. Slightly better on the palate. Truly, a rough ride.

2nd go around with this and it was significantly better. 2 hour decant helped. Early on vanilla aroma then that burned of to a more earthy tone. Quite nice!!

Needs 1-2 hrs in decanter to fully open. Once open it was really singing. Tasting notes consistent with other reviewers. Don’t think it needs any more time and is drinking close to peak.

Excellent!!!! This is different than most big expensive napa blends. I would call it a perfect combination of new and old world. Reminded me more of Bordeaux than the typical Cali stuff. I am guessing the cab franc plays a big part in that. Grateful to have another bottle.

I had this 2 times from the same bottle over a week period, first using a Coravin. Hard to say if the bottle was off but it was very tight, never opened up and had a hard lingering aftertaste. Was really disappointed but I have several more, maybe longer time in the cellar.

Retail $135. 82% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. I do not get a ton of samples with retail prices north of a hundred bucks, but giddy-up! Fairly dark in the glass with blackberry, black pepper, and just a hint of green pepper (which I love). The palate is, surprisingly, even more inviting: rich red berry fruit, more than tantalizing acidity, and several layers that evolve well beyond the first sip. Peppery, fruity, but also reserved. Yowza. Decidedly angular instead of muscular, this gets a Whoa. Delicious but worth the tariff? That's a tough one for me since, well, I am a fairly cheap son of a biscuit maker.

Nose: some raisin (my smell is coming back slowly)
Taste: a little tight than I thought it would be after aeration and and being open for 2 hours. Dark chocolate and chalk, blackberries and boysenberry. I’m guessing it will be better tomorrow.
It must be the cab France staying tight.

PnP. Needs time to aerate to fully open up. Cherry cola and sweet blackberry jam flavors initially predominate. Plenty of pepper and spice notes. Given time to aerate, the sweetness tones down and this wine turns into an unctuous beast. Some years of aging potential remaining, but very enjoyable now.

Wow really deep and dark nose is a bouquet of earthiness dark ripe fruit leather and cedar. I think this wine right now was a perfect balance of tannins acid fruit and secondary flavors Lots of spice quickly mellowed by soft fruit lingering finish with hints of anise. One bottle left has a couple of years but it will make a special dinner in July. Enjoyed with some humbolt fog cheese and fig spread.

Most magnificent. Ran through illo filter and aerator, decanted for 45 mins. Taste at 30min mark was beautiful, floral, spicy pepper, berry, stong tannins. Started drink with salad, Riley steak, ,a berry bomb, subtle, amazing and long finish. Softened to red berry compote. Absolutely stunning. Had it aging in my cellar while overseas, have 3 more bottles that will age. Vwhat a fantastic wine.

Modern, rich, and beautiful.
Intoxicating black fruit, anise, vanilla, and baking spice. You’d guess Cabernet Sauvignon by the nose aside form a slight bit of pepper.
Silky on the palate with solid grip, medium plus acid and a great finish. This is a powerful wine and would be hard to pick as CF dominant (the acidity being the giveaway). Delicious and able to age for decades. Very nice.

Well-balanced. Opened the bottle 2 hours prior to consumption, very soft tannins. Fruit dominant nose.
Spicy on the palate.

Typical fruit of a well made California cabernet in the middle of its life. Dark cassis and black plum skin. Flavors integrated now with the tannin that is still present but subdued. Some tertiary flavors emerging. This was paired with roasted game hens with classic French recipes. My alternate choice was an aged Bordeaux. This did just fine.

The nose was intense upon opening - a very good first impression. It settled to a nice cola nose (some fruit, some sweetness, and a little herbal) which carried through to the long finish. The medium-bodied wine was also supported by good acidity and well-integrated tannin. A solid wine all around. (I kind of wish it had a little more pop on the palette.)

This was coiled up at first, but soon released some classy aromatics and a European-styled savory tastiness, driven by ripe Cab Franc.
I agree with Kteelak_Buffalo's impression that this is transitioning from primary state, and in a pleasing and complex way, and I don't think it will take long to be in its best drinking window, likely 2021-2023 and beyond. 92-93+

A bit passed its prime. Blackberry, raspberry, cassis and cedar on the nose. Slightly hot on the nose and palate, probably because fruit has faded. Still good with food but if you have bottles, drink up.
