This was an excellent Barolo. A big, dark wine for a La Morra Barolo with a beautiful nose. On the palate, the tannins have resolved but it still seems structuted. Not one sign of old age. Most enjoyable now, and it has many years left.

Pretty much at its peak the bouquet starts with roses, some underwood, truffles, plums and with time some red fruit.
On the palate the iron grip of the tannins develops with 1-2 hours.
Quite archetypical Bricco delle Viole a lot of time to stay at this level.

Beautiful! Decanted. Dried cherry. Licorice. Cherry Luden’s. Orange peel. Almond skin.

Such elegance and perfume to it. And wound up on the palate. Just opened, really so so darn good.

Not a fan. Acidic, made to go with food I don’t like. Prefer wine I can drink on its own. Probably needs more time.

Again with amazing perfume. Precision. intense across the palate, but just absolutely bats above its weight.

Fruit and flowers is the idea. And yes, there it is, very flowery and perfumed. Just so ever perfumed and amazing. Very old vineyard its from his mother's family. Loads and loads of structure, but a truthful sense of structure.

The book club attacks Tolstoy's War and Peace with a multitude of perspectives (Sörmland, lake Båven): I love Bricco delle Viole and Nebbiolo more generally and patience is always virtue when it comes to these types of wines, including from more "modern" producers such as M. Marengo. Honestly, I think we popped this 10 years too early.

Its a great wine and drinking well, but it still has a lot of tannic grip on the back end, a nice softer mid palate, and lovely deep nose but really without any major complexities at this point.

Brooding and powerful. Gave it an hour in decanter and served at cellar temp. Could not get past the 15% abv. Just a bit too hot for me and surprised it’s that high in the 16 vintage.

Decanted for an hour and drank over the next 1-2 hours. Drinking beautifully. Very elegant wine. Velvety soft tannins.

Pleasant after 2 air decant, nose pretty limited, high tannins and acidity that overwhelms and hide the fruit. Curious how it will evolve, will revisit.

Sturdier/tighter on the nose; all about structure currently on the palate, very embryonic. Big grip on the finish.

Garnet color with brilliant orange rim. Opened 1 hour before and enjoyed all the evening. At the beginning it was dark and hard; after 3 hours it got much cleaner, and clear with some link to the Vajra Bricco delle Viole but more on a severe, spicy and serious style.
In the mouth it has great acidity and it’s very long indeed with some new wood notes (varnish) in the aftertaste. Sure it is very young and quite close for now. A wild horse in a cage. A wine to be understood.

Reserved, understated. The violets are there but it’s young yet - a little reticent.
Supple and pliant. Tannins are comely and I think another couple of years this will improve.
No harm now but also no rush - she moved as we went along

Meh. Past prime - I'd guess this is much older, though I bought it and stored it myself. Lots of tar, iron, little fruit left, tannins very drying - should have been consumed much earlier IMHO

Was very closed down. Don't know if I didn't let it breathe enough or if it was in a dormant phase of it's life.

Took an hour or so of decanting to properly start to open up but very expressive florals notes lead by fresh rose petal and lavender followed by ripe and tart red berries. Especially delicious when paired with this braised boar.

Pop and pour at Zino, Edwards, CO.
Pleasant hints of eucalyptus, cherry and roses.
Palate shows fairly balanced bright acidity, red fruits, and reserved but present tannins.
Elegant, light and a great accompaniment to well prepared pasta.

For as much as people want to age Barolo, this one is ready to be enjoyed now.

Cherry, fig, loam and a hint of molasses on the nose after a couple of hours. Great balance of flavors, acidity and tannins (drying but silky), with minimal tar terroir. Good structure and enough fruit to last.

Not much there initially. After being open and decanted for four hours, its personality (dark fruit and wonderful aromas) began to emerge.

Expressive from first pour - needed 20-mins to open but not a huge change over an hour+. Nose of dark plums, anise, leather, violets, graphite, and earth. Full bodied and soft w/ black cherries and plums.

Drinking well but like all Bricco dells Viole needs time. High acid and rustic tannin leads into strawberry, black pepper, oak and orange zest. Medium bodied with nice length on the finish. Good but not exciting.

Explosive smell, orange peel and violet, peony. Medium bodied, cool and fresh but no hint of greenness. This has shed some of the grainy tannin it had when new but is still very much a baby. Polished and long, slightly sticky texture. Excellent.

Le Langhe 2021; 8/21/2021-8/28/2021 (La Morra): Pale translucent purple, no orange yet. Muted nose but identifiable raspberry and dried flowers, some rose. Crunchy and substantial tannin. Medium bodied and surprisingly high acid. Darker fruited than the previous vintages. Very good but needs more time.

Really open knit, with plenty of sweet cherry and smoked meat action. It has a polished feel and is showing a hint of leathery development. There's some oak astringency to the back-end but in the main it is a delicious, modern interpretation of Barolo that drinks well.

Too young and not that balanced for a 2016- the main negative point was a spike of new oak mid-palate that just threw me- much preferred the “Classico” from this producer and vintage (which was a delight and fantastic QPR). Perhaps it will integrate well in the long term with some cellaring?

I underestimated this wine initially (actually not the first time I have done that with a wine, and yes, I do realize I am alone in this). More structure than I originally thought carrying plenty of honest fruit. But that said, there is heat in here. A wine in, as many wines are, in a perplexing mid life.

Such a magnificent nose. Like perfectly roasted black peppercorns and fruit. And a beautiful violet character as well.

Opened, decanted, and poured back into a washed bottle.
Ruby garnet color.
Nose offers a lovely violet floral element with some dark cherries.
Dark fruit, some tar elements and the floral notes on the intro. Some tannins on the back end but neither bitter nor overpowering.
The wine was tasted outside and temperatures were a bit cool. Warmed up the wine by cupping my hands around the glass and it was much more expressive.
Enjoyable.

Gareth's Post-lockdown Piedmont (Noize): Rich and floral, at first sniff this brought to mind a ripe Beaujolais. Although certainly a warm, dense wine, it had sufficient acidity to keep it in balance. A pleasure to drink but not particularly complex.

Marengo Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2016.
Tight her også, kjenner fatet.
Kommer seg litt.
Blomster, krydder og kirsebær.
Bra frukt, konsentrert og fresh.
Flott munnfølelse.
Strukturert og har alt på plass for en lovende fremtid.
Sitter lenge med fine modne tanniner. 91-92p

Slow oxed all day And as I put it into a decanter I pour a small glass. Fresh cut flowers and hay surrounding some rose pedals. Black as night. Wow this is still a tannic beast that’s hiding most of the fruit which emerges just at the end. Some lingering tar and bitter coffee. Did I pop this bottle too soon? I’ve been slowly working thru my other 2001’s and with a long slow ox and decant, they have been spot on. I will revisit at dinner of brined pork ribs, roasted beets with blue cheese and homemade biscuits.
In just 20 minutes this has totally opened up. The tannins have resolved and there is a tremendous sweetness of strawberries and cherries what a transformation. Wow right in the sweetspot. Air is magic. As we sit with it, it keeps building Tar infused sweet strawberries. The color is still totally Impenetrable. Not a bit of bricking. If your lucky enough to own any, there is no rush to drink and this will get better.

Complex smell of iris, violets and rich fruit, cherry, fig, liqourice, black tea, a bit of wood spice. Medium to full bodied, really quite ripe fruit smell. Higher toned in the mouth, bright and plenty of acid. Good structure and tannic bite. Long sweet fruited finish. Excellent.

This wine isn't ready yet, give it at least 5 more years.

Fine rich nebbiolo flavor, but it is a bit on the fat side, lacking just that bit of acid that brings out the best in nebbiolo. A good wine for sure but seems to me more reflective of an off vintage in Barolo than a 2013.
Four hours in, the acid appears, bugt the wine still remains on the "dull" side suggesting they didn't quite get it right in 2013.
Red
Pronounced nose of roses and cherries with a touch of earth. Powerful Nebbiolo. Shows a riper vintage but in a good way. Tight on the palate - tight in the body but just opened.
