Patience has paid off with this delicious and extremely rich, buttery Macon. It is far better now than in earlier tastings, and I'm sure the rest of this case will not last long in my cellar.

Always pays to put a bottle or three of these away for a bit. Absolutely delicious.

Opened with no decant for a milestone birthday dinner at the Inn at Little Washington, this was a stunning bottle. Gorgeous wine at 35 years. Neck and neck with the D'Yquem for wine of the night.

This 30 year old cab is an elegant, well balanced beauty. It is not quite an old world style, nor a typical California cab classic ... but the best of both. Dark red color, wonderful nose and a very well rounded palate. Drinking really well at 30 ... I loved this wine. I wish I had more.

Held for a year and this improved tremendously. So rich and deep in flavor. Long finish. Can continue to hold or pop now.

Bottle #1 of 3 (375 ml). Decanted 90 minutes. Medium-dark ruby, watery rim. Aromas of cherry, mocha, peanuts. Flavours of under-ripe strawberries. Full bodied, high acid, XD, medium tannin, m-h alcohol (14.5%). Fine but nothing special at this stage - hold. Will try my remaining bottles in 2032 and, perhaps, 2040.

Pale golden hue in the glass.
Flinty reductive notes on the nose with crushed rocks and fresh apple slices. Nose does not show any signs of age. Really remarkable.
Full body, med acid, low tannin.
An absolutely pleasure to drink this. More fruit in the palate and some nice vanilla notes as well.
Outstanding and probably going to be in its prime for another 5-10 years.

Needed significant decant to start showing, was much better on the second day (after using a pump to pull air out after day one). Floral start with a mix of red and black fruit, cedar after that. Tannin but well integrated, medium finish.

So, I wasn’t expecting greatness. I was aiming for drinkable. It exceeds that admittedly low bar. It’s a lot better than I expected. Real candy-fruit nose but not in an unpleasant way. Tastes of strawberry and a little cherry but not too sweet. Short finish but all around pleasant. Think of it your neighborhood Thai place. It’s neither expensive nor stuffy but does just enough to hit the spot.

On a road to nowhere.

Linear, compact and straight. Beginning to exhibit some aged characteristics but not one to get excited about. Talks a good game initially but then one finds there is no depth and it repeats itself over and over again. Quite a bore and to be avoided at parties.

Drink now 5+ years.

Black pepper and strawberry still. Nice wine.

Unctuous on the palate, this smells of bacon fat and beef drippings. Black raspberry compote and black figs on the palate with a hint of lavender in the finish. This is a three-course meal in a glass. So complete. So delicious. The tannins sneak up on the back end; so this might be worth revisiting in five years. Drink now to 2033. Outstanding.

Tasted after 30 minutes of air. Woody. This was a potentially good wine destroyed by a heavy oak treatment. Some sweet pineapple with some balancing acid. The oak dries out the finish. At least I only paid $20 for this. Can't imagine paying $70.

Exceptional value for an excellent wine.

In its sweet spot now, very balanced wine with everything in place. Mid-weight with redcurrant, cassis and cigar on the nose. Lovely free flowing palate that enhances the bouquet accompanied by fine tannin. Supple. Finish has lovely earthy complexity.

Drink now to 3+ years

The wine looks straw colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like iris. It tastes like pear. The body is light. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has low acidity.

Brilliant light gold fading quickly to a clear watery rim. Green apple, lime, white peach, and mineral on the nose. In the mouth it is Light-to-medium bodied, with medium-to-high acidity, flavors of green apple, unripe pear, and sour patch kids (minus the sugar). Medium long aftertaste of mineral and pucker.

Recommend. A very good presentation of the grape from a top producer. You will be rewarded if you have held yours this long. Drink now through 2028.

Joven. Reservar 2 o 3 años.

1st borrow of a six-pack and opened to pair with the middle courses of Popped to a milestone birthday dinner at the Inn at Little Washington. This was the only bottle opened that was not at its peak. Decanted at the start of dinner, this was still a big wine - big fruits, and tannin still evident (tho not overwhelming). But it had finally opened up when I revisited this at the end of the meal and you had a sense of how stunning this will be in a few more years.

Excellent after a long decant.

Very light weight upon opening and ruby red. Once in full stride, dark berry, cassis, some cigar and mineral tones. Lovely body that is supple and powerful at the same time. Black currant, cherry and some brightness for contrast. A long spicy finish. Fine tannin and very smooth.

Drink now to 6+ years.

I am a bit perplexed. It’s lighter in color and body, par for the course this vintage perhaps. However it’s not as aromatically expressive as I would have hoped to get “in trade” for the lightness. At present this strikes me as a bit thin, my least favorite vintage of this wine that I have tasted thus far. I am rooting for it because I have several more bottles, will hope for the best and see where it goes…

Very much a Bevan-style pinot, by which I mean it's deep and ripe and luscious, but with acidity and tannic structure. Not going to appeal to Burg fans at all, but a solid example of Cali pinot turned up to an 11.

Light straw; bright. Shows typicity to cool vineyard pinot Gris: Apple, honeydew melon, pear. Good mid-palate fruit intensity, crisp acidity on the finish.

Smells amazing - peach, lychee, and ripe tropical fruit. On the palate, there's just enough acidity there to be exciting. Finishes medium and a little hot.

Had over 3 nights. First two nights was pretty closed with more of an herbal / dill / vegetal taste. Night 3 it (finally) showed more of a fruit profile that was more promising, albeit cloaked by tannins. Glass half full says that’s a sign of long aging potential. Glass half empty says it’s a bit of a gamble whether everything harmonizes and emerges in 10yrs. I might pick up another bottle but certainly not backing up the truck.

Likeable because the acidity is there, but it otherwise lacks the qualities I love about Puligny-Montrachet and instead has bright color and ripeness closer to California chardonnay albeit higher-end California chardonnay. Don't think it would stand out as French in a line-up with the likes of Failla and Ramey.

Decanted just 30 minutes. This is now a beautifully complex wine from a vintage which continues to demonstrate it was perhaps underrated at the time. The style is on the firmer side but the balance is impeccable as I so often find with Elio's wines. There is licorice and balsamic and tar and some herbal and floral notes - the pronounced floral notes being a marker of the vintage - framed by a certain austerity that it's Perno origins supply. Elio told me he prefers to drink his Barolos starting at about the 15 year mark. So I have waited and the reward is now in the bottle. In fact I would say this is tasting younger than it's 15 years. Authentic unhurried winemaking in the most traditional style. Very happy with this. Suggest a longer decant - this got better and better over two hours. The first of 15 bottles. Absolutely no hurry to drink this. Bought on release.

Beau vin 9
