Nose initially came across as a little closed. It’s certainly not an open, giving, aroma but it is quite complex and interesting with quite potent herbal, nutty, and slightly mineral notes. A bit unusual and hard to pint down - raw peanuts, mixed with raw sage and lemon rind? Some slightly more floral notes start to come through with air and increasing temperature.

Quite dense and powerful on the palate. Compact, with intense flavours which bring more fruit to the party than is found on the nose. Quite sweet and tropical but not in a cloying way, a slightly salty finish. Sage coming through too. Structure is all in check and the length is there, this can stand up to big-ish flavours.

It’s somehow not the easiest wine for me to love, but I respect it! Very well made and interesting, commands attention.

I continue to be disappointed in this wine. For a 50$ bbottle it needs to be 90+. None of the bottles I have had has been close

Brused plum, marcipan, camomille tartness, very Chenin. Ok I can see why one call out oxididised, but as I have come to taste, its more a character of the varity, area and style of the winemaker. Stating the obious, but I have come across a few lately that can be given the characteristic of ox flabbiness.
Coming to the point this has a beautiful acidity that keeps it fresh and the ripe mature apperance is balanced out. This tension is apparent from the nose out.
Gode greier (good stuff)

Similar to my 2023 notes. After double decant and sampling a glass we decided to save 3/4 for next day. It was superlative with similar taste profile.

Rest in peace, Stuart.

Light on its feet but intense. The subtle skin contact adds structure and yeasty complexity. Steely acidity, lemon curd, very good varietal typicity, convincing finish. Much more generosity and charm than the skinny Le Coulezain 2021. At restaurant Caves Madeleine, Beaune, France.

The wood is imperceptible on the nose, which features an expansive array of berries wafting from the glass. The palate is fairly elegant and quite plush, with subtle flavors of raspberry, cranberry, and strawberries lifted by exotic spices. A little chewy at present, though approachable with a slightly tart floral finish. Good value and very easy to enjoy today, though it should develop more complexity with further cellaring, and hold for two decades.

Fresh and ready to drink now. Tastes like: fruity and acidic up front with some peppery Syrah notes further on.

Coravin pour, this is a beautiful fragrant barbaresco, on the palate red fruit, lots of tannins, and tar. Dry compared with the juicy serraboella. Needs to be properly decanted, I will come back to this. 91/92

Excellent wine - I've gone through a half case of it at sale prices below $20 per bottle, and at that price it's an outstanding value. Light bodied like a Jura red, but the fruit is darker and there are peppery notes too, and something leafy. This comes from old vines and has good intenisty without any real weight. Needs a bit of air but not so much, especially now. Two years ago it needed a decant, it's pretty much good to go now.

My third wine from this guy (after a Syrah and Pinot) and my third that was totally majestic and wonderful, on the cusp of perfection. As with the two reds, this showed an unreal and extremely rare combination of true exuberant power and truly intricate complexity. I think this was maybe the third best Chardonnay I've ever tasted when considering quality alone?- when QPR is taken into account, it's possibly at the top, or maybe silver medal.

This is what 95% of "buttery chard" wants to see when it looks in the mirror. Sure, it has a bit of the butter tone that seems forbidden to enjoy if you're a wannabe wine geek with toxic sommelier influences, but it's a part of a much larger picture. To sum it up, it has an effortless perfume and vibrant palate completely loaded with golden buttered toast, lemon zest, orange bitters, vanilla bean, almond pastry, peony, and some faint stony minerality...not a super flinty/minerally chard which I also love, but it's there...and although it's waxy and dense, it has more than enough fresh acidity to cut right through the creamy textures. It's "big" but not even close to overblown- just confident and expressive, and bullied a lot of really incredible (but also generally much younger) Chardonnays in the same price range for me.

Honestly, this feels like it could sleep even longer, and it continues to cement my belief that (quality) Chardonnay is the most important grape to age, even more than most quality reds.

Haunting aroma, the nose is quite spectacular, like old leather bound books with dried flowers. Really remarkable
Palate doesn't quite match up to it though it's still impressive with a piercing freshness, extraordinary intensity and a walnut finish that goes on for a good ten minutes. I can still taste this 3 days later.

Consistent with other notes. Red fruit (strawberry) on the nose. Tart cherry - almost a note like strawberry rhubarb pie - spice. Light body for NSG with medium quick finish. Front of the palate has great promise, but the total journey doesn't live upt to it.

30 year old wine
Green brown colour
Big volatile acidity on the nose, rancio with that peach pit earthy/ nutty quality
Intense and earthy, walnuts with a oloroso type earthy quality.
Big funky sort of wine.

Very distinctive nose which I couldn't quite put my finger/ nostril on. Something like a peach kernel with an earthy and also floral quality,
Intense acidity on the palate, apricots, brown sugar, raisin and toffee. Coming back to this after trying older tawnies and that stone fruit note was particularly vivid, like a viognier.
Really nothing at all like Port or any other fortified wine.

Certainly very tasty, although a bit overpriced- feels more like a solid $25 Bdx blend than something $35-$40. Kind of small-scaled and simple. Good balance of fruit and freshness. Faint and a little thin, but there's a suggestion of carefully ripened blackberry and some vague chocolatey baking spice, kind of "high and tight" with gentle tannins. I like that it feels fairly fresh and gentle without being "green" at all. If you find this for $25 (such as at Total Wine) its maybe a 93, but it's more often about $10 more than that. 2020 definitely isn't my favorite WA red vintage either, especially for Bdx varietals. Even if I haven't been "blown away" by any, I've had a generally positive experience with all the Mark Ryan I've tried so far.

Full-bodied, smooth, and almost completely lacking in acidity, with flavors of plum compote, strawberry jam, and vanilla ice cream. For a budget Zinfandel, it's actually quite alright. But not to my taste anymore.

(It’s hard to imagine that once upon a time, Zinfandel was actually my favorite grape... 😅)
