Introduction

A departure for Linden's tastings in that there were both whites and reds. The Laville an old style white that was lovely after a bit of time in the glass. The reds showed a marked vintage character - a good spine of acid, lightness, spice and grip, and the wines showed their characters well - the Ausone showing metal and iodine, the Lafite ethereal, the Latour broad and butch. I enjoyed them all immensely and was more enthusiastic than most present. But all agreed that the flight of sweeties at the end were uniformly fantastic - luscious, fresh and long.

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
1962 Château Laville Haut-Brion Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Earthy, musty nose, fat and ripe on palate, citrus, wax, lanolin, very long and once the mustiness blew off, this was glorious

Flight 2 (10 notes)

Red
1962 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Fresh, lifted, medicinal, pencil lead and cedar, precise, fine and satisfying
Red
1962 Château Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Very similar to the Canon, light, fresh, medicinal, graphite, earth, iodine, lots of bite and grippy finish - bracing
Red
1962 Château La Lagune France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
89 points
Another one that is strikingly fresh, reasonably ripe, not distinctive, but very attractive mid-weight mature claret - developed a sweet smoky fragrance
Red
1962 Château Haut-Marbuzet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
flawed
Corked
Red
1962 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Swedish bottling: Gently cedary and spicy, good spine, some leafiness - vital, very attractive
Red
1962 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Pronounced meaty nose, fresh and full on the palate, layered, lovely balance
Red
1962 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Less on the nose than the Ducru, dusty entry, cedary, substantial, fresh and grippy.
Red
1962 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
89 points
Gentle, malty nose, nice textured, sharp tomato fragrance, not pretty, but decent
Red
1962 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Pale, elusively fragrant, silky, though there was a grip on the finish, classic ethereal Lafite
Red
1962 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Amazingly dark, a bit oxidised on the nose, dense, liquorice palate, grippy finish - big, but lacking the focus I remember

Flight 3 (5 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1962 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
93 points
Fresh, youthful, mouthwatering nose, coconut and apricots on the palate, brown sugar finish. Glorious
White - Sweet/Dessert
1962 Château Climens France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
94 points
Quite nose, but broader and richer on the palate than the Coutet, lots of coconut, fantastic
White - Sweet/Dessert
1962 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Smooth, fresh apricot style sauternes, elegant for a Rieussec, sweet caramel finish, long and lovely
White - Sweet/Dessert
1962 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
More weight than the Rieussec, fresh, spicy, explosive on the palate, and showing lovely balance
White - Sweet/Dessert
1962 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
95 points
Deeper and more dimension than the preceding wines, smooth, unctuous, cream and coconut, all seamless and integrated, palate caressing, perfect
