Scholium Off-Line

Trestle on 10th (NYC)

Introduction

Robert Dentice did a super job setting this up. In all, about 25 people attended, including Abe Schoener. Abe brought some great old Scholium relics along with some new releases. Quite an interesting tasting. Not all Scholiums are hits with me, but each has a unique story and they all are thought provokers. To hear the stories behind some them direct from Abe was a lot of fun.

Flight 1 (21 notes)

Interesting wine. An incredible amount of tropical fruit. Coconut, mango, pineapple. You name a fruit from the tropics and it is in there. Acidity nice on the palate. Loses a little steam on the mid-palate and the finish fades.

Surprising. This has aged quite nicely. Still nice fruit and acidity. White peach and some waxy fruit. Easy to drink.

Incredibly solid value at this price point. Bursting with sharp crisp acidity. Lemon, spice, tropical fruit. Really sharp.

Better a bit chilled. This is really an interesting wine. Very perfumed on the nose. Floral notes, spice and minerals. Nice and concentrated on the palate, as the spice and tropical fruits developed. Nice weight on the palate. Very nice length on the finish.
White
2005 Scholium Project Cena Trimalchionis Farina USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain

Probably my white WOTN. Really interesting. Very nice nose. Sweet spice, orange peel and big citrus fruit. Very nice weight on the palate. This stood up very well. Nice acidity. This had the lip smacking juicy appeal, but very nice complexity and development.
Red
2001 Scholium Project St. Harry's Chapel USA, California, North Coast, Solano County

A very food friendly Syrah. Really sharp black pepper and even a bit of chili pepper. This had a good amount of earthy funk as well. Paired well with food. Nicely integrated tannins. This was consumed from a magnum that apparently had sat on Abe's deck. It was cool to drink a relic like this.
White
2004 Scholium Project Glos McDowell USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Really well done. This had a nose with a ton of minerals and fruit with a shade of oxidation. The was is tremendous and was a star. Quite nice and unique character, with a touch of sweetness. Very nice long building finish.
Red
2005 Scholium Project Babylon Tenbrink Vineyards USA, California
94 points
Candidate for WOTN. Big robust wine with great structure and finely integrated tannins. Spicy dark fruit with sweet cocoa. Silky smooth on the palate with a crescendo finish. Really lovely.

This paled in comparison to the 05 but was still a very nice wine. Big and delicious, with a bit of heat. Jammy fruit. Tannins a bit rough around the edges. But all that said, this has nice dark fruit with dark chocolate. The 05 was more concentrated with better balance.
White
2007 Scholium Project La Severità di Bruto Farina USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain

Very nice tropical fruit with some good zinging acidity, but I thought it could use even a bit more acidity. Enjoyable wine.

From the same bottle as ews3. Maybe it was a slightly off bottle, as my notes from the previous bottle I've had are more positive. Too much heat, with some stewy. jammy flavors. Not bad fruit, but lacked a little bit of structure and there was some heat.
White
2006 Scholium Project The Sylphs Guman Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville

A lot of red and green apple, citrus and acidity. I did not taste through the mini-vertical that was being circulated, but I got the distinct impression, from some of the comments, that my preference is definitely to drink this wine with a bit of age to give it time to mellow. The flavors were well integrated and the acidity was still there. The newer vintages, from the comments around me, were a bit hot.

2009 Scholium Project Rhododactylos USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi

Very interesting. Extremely faint rose color. Nice aromatics on the nose. Floral and tropical. A nip of heat on palate and finish. Nice character, refreshing and should calm down a bit over winter.

Slightly oxidized character. Some salinity. Smoky. There are some secondary chardonnay notes buried down there though. Candied fruit, brown sugar. Really nice flavor profile.
Red
1973 Mastroberardino Taurasi Italy, Campania, Taurasi DOCG

Thrown into middle of Scholium tasting. Very interesting nose. Big tar and leather. Nose is really interesting. Palate flattens out completely. The nose is crazy for a 37 year old wine. If only the palate could have stood up through time.
White
2000 Scholium Project Les Ténèbres USA, California, Napa Valley
86 points
Darker yellow color. Honey and candied fruit. Oxidation on the palate. A bit flat on palate with slightly shorter finish.
Red
2008 Scholium Project Gardens of Babylon USA, California
87 points
The comparison between the Babylon and the Gardens of Babylone was obvious after tasting them side by side at the tasting. This has the nice flavor profile. Bigger Petite Sirah notes. Dark fruit, mocha, and wood. This lacks the structure and concentration on the palate, though, and the finish is shorter. Still, this is a nice value.
Red
2006 Scholium Project Margit's Master Blend USA, California

This is the "second" of the Margit's Master Blend. I believe a bottle of the A1 was floating around at the tasting -- the smaller production wine. Missed that one. This wine is something else and is right up there for WOTN. Floral nose with dark fruit. Some delicate notes on the nose. A bit of a surprise there. Palate is robust but structured. This apparently had been decanted for many hours before the tasting and it certainly appears to need it if you are considering opening one of these. Otherwise, I'd wait several years before opening. I will certainly keep my lone bottle in the cellar until 2016 at earliest.

2006 Scholium Project The School Of The Plains Elsa's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

Massive white. The alcohol tips at close to 17% but it is not obvious. Nose dense sweet creamy notes on nose. Tropical fruit, honey and floral note. Creamy palate with brown sugar and a touch of sweetness. The acidity is there, but I could probably even go for more. This is as unique a Scholium wine as they come.

2007 Scholium Project Androkteinos Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley

Another candidate for WOTN. Black pepper, meat and smoke on the nose. This had been opened for several hours by the time we tasted it and was showing brilliantly. Dark fruit, mocha, smoke on the palate. Really lovely texture. Well structured. Not over the top. Everything in right balance.
White
2006 Scholium Project Gemella Lost Slough Vineyards USA, California, Central Valley, Clarksburg

A lot of citrus dominates this, with nice floral undertone and a touch of brown sugar. Nice mid-palate weight. Very enjoyable.
