Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
1997 Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Duck Muck Australia, Victoria, Central Victoria, Heathcote

Tasted double blind. Ripe and lush black fruit aromas with a trace of eucalyptus also on nose. Same super-concentrated black fruit on the palate with a moderate degree of structure. While I could see others liking this wine, it's not even close to my style.
Red
2004 Domaine Alain Burguet Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
91 points
Black fruit and lots of spice on the nose. Both red and black fruit on palate with same dense, meaty spice on palate. Comes across as quite ripe but without much acidity. Drinking nicely now, most likely close to its peak. I brought this to a blind tasting, and nobody guessed 2004 Burgundy; guesses were mostly around 2002 and 2003.
Red
1988 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Tasted double blind. Dark fruit on the nose with some good background spice and earthy aromas. Lean black fruit from the start through the middle, then lots of structure also with good earthy elements and some interesting and charming funk. Finishes with good spice and lean black fruit again. Others liked this much more than I did today.
Red
1996 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
91 points
Tasted double blind. Red and black fruit on nose and palate. Very balanced from start-to-finish gave this a very classic, Left Bank Bordeaux-like feeling. Some earthy character just starting to emerge, perhaps that will give this wine some more nuance.
Red
1998 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
93 points
Tasted double blind. It's rarely this easy to identify so much about a wine tasted blind, but this was the perfect Côte-Rôtie stereotype. Black pepper and black fruit on the nose. Dense fruit flavors with god lush fat to start, then lots of tannic and acidic structure and a very long, powerful finish. This wine has a long life ahead of it.
Red
2000 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
87 points
Tasted double blind. Incredibly ripe black currant and plum with lots of espresso and oak on nose, giving it a rather New World character to start. Lush black fruit on palate with some good background spice. Big tannins on finish.
Red
2000 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
89 points
Black fruit, cassis and licorice on nose. Palate of moderate fruit and just some interesting background traces of spice. Better start than finish.
