Introduction

An eclectic wine dinner to show my work colleagues what we wine nuts get up to in the evenings. All the wines showed exceptionally and Medlar was on tip top form with the food.

Flight 1 - with Pig's head croquettes and sauce ravigotte (2 notes)

White
2009 Dog Point Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Section 94 New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
89 points
Nettles and asparagus, earthy and organic, and, for a NZ, markedly warm and round. Very fine
White
2008 Château Doisy-Daëne Grand Vin Sec France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Contrôlée
90 points
Vibrant, gushingly fruited passion fruit and melon palate, finishing with a more classic sauvignon nettle tone. Modern but exciting.

Flight 2 - with White onion soup, sautéed st georges, braised chicken wings and gougères (3 notes)

Red
2008 Waterford Estate Shiraz Kevin Arnold South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
Lots of smooth vanillin oak, but the fruit is well enough defined to make a good match. But there is that off-putting synthetic tone that SA wines seem to have
Red
2005 Ridge Geyserville USA, California, Sonoma County
91 points
The oak has integrated superbly on this, and it's really fresh, complex, not at all heavy, showcasing the herby zinfandel fruit - brilliant
Red
1999 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
92 points
Rich, exotic, a touch of farmyard, gorgeously expansive on the palate - a spectacular Musar

Flight 3 - with Crab ravioli, samphire, fondue of leeks and bisque sauce (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1985 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Oenotheque Champagne Charlie Brut France, Champagne
92 points
Seemed a tad musty to start with, but the musty tone blew off, leaving a fine, toasty, dried fruit champagne, the fizz still lively
White
1981 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Big, fascinating wine, with dried fruit, resin, damp and sharp, ever-changing, exciting bite - super

Flight 4 - with Under blade fillet, braised shin, salad, triple cooked chips and béarnaise (3 notes)

Red
2001 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Classic, restrained, blackcurrant fruit, a streak of graphite, very fine
Red
1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Sweet, spicily fragrant, just a whiff of funk, fruit cake on the palate, but no heaviness - a brilliant, complete Beaucastel, up with the very best
Red
2003 Domaine Fourrier Morey St. Denis Clos Solon Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
94 points
Wow! The raspberry bouquet hits you, but it's not at all primary fruity, just part of an amazing melange of earth, spice and fruit, sappy - leaves me speechless

Flight 5 - with Individual parkin, stem ginger, roast pineapple and crème fraîche (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château Doisy-Daëne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Hard to believe that this is over 22 years old, it's still so gorgeously fresh, the apricots and coconuts all part of a harmonious whole
White - Fortified
1966 D'Oliveiras Madeira Verdelho Reserva Portugal, Madeira
Just the right amount of sweetness to have after dinner, this was amazing with its dried fruits, layers and layer of nuance
