Flight 1 - Syrah (8 notes)

Rosé
2011 Amista Vineyards Syrah Rosé of Syrah Morningsong Vineyards USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
90 points
An excellent move forward in quality and profile in the new Amista syrah Rosé. Perhaps influence of new winemaker/consultant Ashley but w/e the reason clearly an evolution.
No tech notes on website, the darker color might lead one to wonder if a saignée, but the 13% alc and acidity and profile come across like a true Rosé.

The color a clear, vibrant dark pink to light red.
The nose is aromatic - ripe stawberry, tangy watermelon, mixed with slight floral undertone. One can leave their nose buried happily in the glass.
In the mouth it shows strawberry, hints of cherry and other red fruit, with other subtle complex layers. It has a excellent mouthfeel,
and a wonderful mouthwatering finish.
It would pair well with most summer fare, but goes down easily solo as one enjoys a summers night.
Well done, recommended buy, 90 points.
Rosé
2010 Eberle Syrah Rosé Steinbeck Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
87 points
A richer Rosé from one of the pioneers of Rosé in Paso Robles.
A saignee (juice bleed off) with some Viognier lees added, fermented in neutral oak barrels.
A very dark pink to light red color, just a touch show of red.
The nose is has darker red fruit and cherry notes.
In the mouth, some minerality, berry, cherry.
Dry and good acidity - this is a bigger Rosé better with food and grilled fare.
Rosé
2010 Shane Syrah Ma Fille Rosé USA, California, Sonoma County
Previous vintage rose' (2011 is current release.)

When I first bought this wine, it was spritzy, so let it sit.
This bottle may have some variation. The nose was a bit funky,
and its simplistic and tart in mouth.
Rosé
2010 Breggo Cellars Syrah Rosé USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
Hands down one of my top 3 Rose' last year. While still very drinkable, like most rose' past its first year, its changing in character and losing that 'fresh' aspect.
Its still bright acid, good fruit, just a bit different now. Time to finish up what you have, and lament they didn't release a 2011. :(
Rosé
2011 Modern Wine Project Rosé USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
89 points
An interesting Rose' if for no other reason its domestic, under $10 and drinkable. But there are more reasons than that.

As I taste through 60+ Rose' wines this month, its not the "one rose' to rule them all and in the pinkness bind them' but its the only one, especially domestic I have seen at $10 that stands out.
And its not what you would normally find for $10 domestic, sweet, crappy wine.

The color is the most electric pink I have seen, surprised more people haven't commented. I have opened up more rose' than I can remember, and never seen one like this.
The nose is filled with Jolly Rancher,(color looks like one too!) , watermelon, and hint of tomato vine.
In the mouth the acidity is pleasant, but not overpowering, good structure, with a zippy front palate, some minerality on the mid palate, and lingering red fruit and acid on the finish.
Strawberry, rhubarb, and a nice texture mid palate.

Similar to other comments, and the Garagiste notes, this wine seems to do better with a bit of air exposure, a bit oddly.
More minerality and depth comes out. Becomes even more quaffable.

What Garagiste had to say:
"To showcase exactly what occurred in the 2011 vintage, I convinced one of the most admired (and adorned) wineries in all of Walla Walla to quickly press and bottle a rosé for us (from arguably the most famous new vineyard in the entire region – the red wine from this site fetches in excess of $75/bottle). The rosé was made from first pass Syrah (not entrail fruit) with a touch of Mourvedre and Grenache – all with the focus of the vintage firmly in tow. While not a serious wine by any means (that was not the intent), the result will more than perk up your interest. It has terrific acidity, actual minerality/varietal tone and a lip-smacking quality that makes it not only fun to enjoy but educational as well – it is the ideal peek into what 2011 has in store for us. In a surprising outcome, the wine actually gains in depth over 1-2 days, which is very unusual for this type of rosé - its a direct indication of why this vineyard and vintage (when matched) were finally able to express what makes southern Walla Walla soil truly unique in US wine culture - a quality that has been masked for too many years by a desire to over-extract and over-oak."
Rosé
2011 Gustafson Family Vineyards Syrah Rosé of Syrah Heritage Tree Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
89 points
A solid Rosé of Syrah, from Dry Creek for $22

To The Eye: Cranberry color
On the Nose: Cherry, Tomato vine, white peach
In The Mouth: Tart cherry, pomegranate, crisp and bright, with good balance, lingering acidity.
Will pair nicely with a wide variety of summer fare, or drink just fine on its own as an a aperitif.
Well done.
Rosé
2011 Cornerstone Cellars Syrah Stepping Stone Corallina Rosé USA, California, Napa Valley
90 points
This Rosé was a hit a the recent Rhone Rangers LA tasting, and its easy to understand why.
The color and nose right away identify it as something unique.
14.1% alcohol

To the Eye: Vibrant Salmon Pink
On The Nose: Complex aromatics, aided by a long slow, cold fermentation in stainless. There is an immediate richness on the nose, that at first its sweetness reminds me of a French oak barrel, but takes on a sweeter, fresh strawberries and whipped cream note, along with spice, lemon zest.
In the Mouth: Complex creamy texture, from 5 months aging in used French oak. A myriad of bright cherry, cranberry combined the acidity and creamy texture, supported by some structure and tannins, not common in a Rosé.

This is a complex Rosé that simply screams for a food pairing to go along with its many nuances. Grilled chicken, salmon, dense fish or crab.

An excellent value, standout Rosé for $20.
Rosé
2011 Pech Merle Ivy Rosé de Syrah Dry Creek Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
91 points
While Syrah from Dry Creek can sometimes be on the edge of my preference in Syrah profiles, I continue to be impressed with the Syrah Rosé coming from Dry Creek producers.

13.7% alcohol. 105 cases made. Case 64 of 105.

To The Eye: A very pale, classic light pink color.
One the Nose: Watermelon, cherries, fresh picked strawberries, rose petals
In The Mouth: Highly quaff-able. Strawberry. white peach, nectarine, inviting mouth watering acidity, and hints of minerality that leads you back for another sip...and another.

If this isn't sold out grab a few bottles. It has the staying power to last through the Holidays after your summer porch sipping is done.

Flight 2 - Rhone Blends (16 notes)

Rosé
2011 Curtis Heritage Rosé USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County
92 points
A standout Rosé as I progress through this months series tasting. I have to admit I have been neglecting Santa Barbara county Rhones, and a personal visit, and this wine is another reminder of why I need to go and spend 2-3 days Rhoneing.

The 2011 blend has changed from the 2010 to be Mourvedre, not Grenache based. (54% mourvedre, 25% syrah, 21% Grenache.)

To The Eye: The color is a light pale pink.
On The Nose: A Fresh fruit bowl of wild strawberry. rose hips, and watermelon
In The Mouth: The wine is a delight; bright, lively, with very quaff-able flavors of strawberry, watermelon Jolly Ranger, citrus and raspberry,
The acidity is bright and pleasing, and the alcohol, while not high at 14.3, is a reminder that numbers are numbers, and a wine, including Rosé can taste balanced
in a wide range of empirical numbers. The finish is long, lingering, and mouth watering....making you want another sip.

Bravo Curtis, and Chuck Carlson, I need to taste through the whole lineup, hopefully this year.
Rosé
2011 Tablas Creek Rosé USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
90 points
Tasting again for my Rosé panel.

To The Eye:Darker pink, with salmon orange aspect.
On The Nose: Strawberry, Cherry, and a hint of wet stone and spice.
In The Mouth: Bright and vibrant, but with good supporting ripened fruit. Strawberry, cherry, lime. Excellent mid palate weight, and a nice finish.
Very drinkable alone, but I'd love to pair it with some cheese, a salad, grilled chicken.
Rosé
2011 Envolve Rosé USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain
88 points
To The Eye: Medium Pink color
On The Nose: Expressive red fruit, strawberry and raspberry. Subtle hint of earthiness.
In The Mouth: A wonderful expression of Rosé; cherry, strawberry, watermelon in the mouth. Its bright and fun on the front palate, it gains complexity and some wet stone minerality mid palate, and finishes nicely with juicy acidity. A wine that makes you smile, sip, and reach for a refill. There is a tiny bit of RS sweetness. I don't think it adds to the wine personally, and would have fermented it dry, or I'd rated it a tad higher.
Rosé
2011 Baiocchi Neophyte USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Fair Play
89 points
An admirable job on their first vintage of Rose' - a super small release I am sure. (It's not on website.)
A blend of 70% Grenache, 30% mourvedre.

Color: medium pink with an orange tinge
Nose: Interesting nose of Cranberry, cherry, watermelon and spice.
In The Mouth: A nice blend of cherry, red fruit, and Watermelon Jolly Rancher.
A good finish, with some acidity, despite the 15% alc.
A tad higher in alcohol for a rose', Baiocchi pulls it off as balanced, as they do their reds.

Would compliment summer food dishes very well. If you cam get a bottle of this tiny release from a emerging new Sierra Foothills
Rhone producer - you should.
Rosé
2011 Bonny Doon Vineyard Not This Pink USA, California
An interesting, unexpected BDV DEWN shipment.
A blend of 50% mourvedre, 28% syrah, 22% cinsault.

11.9% alc. ( low for a saignee.)

Nose initially was a tad stinky, but quickly blew off, while retaining a bit of a petroleum, Riesling like aroma.
Wild strawberry, spice notes.

In the mouth, its unique. Both bright and ripe, with some structure too boot.

Its recommended you cellar, and will do well over 2 more summers. I believe Randall and will put one to the test in the cellar. :)

Rosé
2011 Halter Ranch Rosé USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
89 points
This Paso Robles Rosé is a blend of 44% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre, 8% Picpoul Blanc (!). 14.1&% alc.

To the Eye: Clear darker pink with orange hue
On the Nose: Subtle strawberry, raspberry, watermelon notes
In the Mouth: Bright cherry, watermelon, citrus. Clean lingering finish.

Enough acidity this will easily last until next season, if not longer.

Nice wines coming out of Halter Ranch. Need to explore their full portfolio.
Rosé
2011 Vines On The Marycrest Summertime USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
87 points
An interesting Rosé blend of 33% Grenache, 33% Mourvedre, 19% Tempranillo, 15% Zinfandel .

Medium pink, slightly cloudy color.
Nose of ripe strawberry, white peach, floral notes.
In the Mouth: Ripe red fruit. Seems to finish slightly off dry.
Rosé
2010 Tapena Vino de la Tierra de Castilla Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla
86 points
81 points seems harsh for a $10 Rose' I think delivers a lot for the price.
Color is dark pink to light red, 12.5% alc.
A nice nose of strawberry, cherry, tomatoe vine.
The mouth shows red fruit and citrus, a touch of green pepper, with good acidity on the finish.
A few $ more for a French rose' will get you more bang for the buck for sure, but no need to kick this one out of bed.
Rosé
2010 Cypher Winery Pistil USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
Normally available wine club only, snagged one of the last fall during a media visit. I believe its Grenache based, but doesn't say.
The light color but 14.8% alc would support that.

Color is light pink, salmon orange.
Nose of ripe strawberry, bright cherry
In the Mouth: the fruit is mellowing as the Rose' reaches prime, like many I have tasted, its best window is in 12 months, but still makes an interesting, enjoyable wine, and becomes more food driven.

If you can snag some of the 2011 release, do so.
Rosé
2011 Peterson Winery Vin Gris Donna Bella Bradford Mountain Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
90 points
A really wonderful rose' made from 50% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 25% Carignane. Co-fermented.
Fermented/ aged in stainless. A splash of C02 gives it some zip.

I loved this wine when I had it and an event, and do so now. In addition to regular 750ml bottles, they have very cool 3 liter bags.
http://store.petersonwinery.com/3l-bag-in-box---peterson-2011-vin-gris-donna-bella-tollini-vineyard-p267.aspx

The color is a vibrant bright, light pink.
Fun nose of strawberry, cherry, pear.
Bright, zippy, fun, and refreshing in mouth. Wild strawberry, fresh cherry, watermelon, grapefruit.

A perfect 'porch pounder' or aperitif for the acid driven, true Rose' lover. :)
Rosé
2011 Bonny Doon Vineyard Vin Gris de Cigare USA, California, Central Coast
91 points
The 2010 Vin Gris by BDV was one of my favorite Rosé of the season. The new 2011 is also wonderful, (I may have liked 2010 a tad more, but 60+ rose' this month have tainted my brain pink.)
Might improve over the summer with some bottle time, going to let my other bottle sit. (The person giving this a 76 either had a bad bottle or was looking for something not dry..or a personal beef....)

A blend of 73% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 8% Grenache Blanc, 5% Roussanne, 4% Cinsault) Love the 13& white Rhone....
( use of tartaric acid add and bentonite, but bravo for disclosure. If TTB wanted to be useful, THIS is what they would police.)
13.5% alc

A lively, light pink color with a salmon hue.
On the nose - strawberry, wet stone, fresh cherry notes, and touch of citrus
In The Mouth its very enjoyable and bright - if you are an acid hound, like I, this rose' is for you.
Newly ripened red fruit, strawberry, some minerality, pleasing finish.

Another of my faves to stock up and keep a few for Turkey Day, and beyond.
Rosé
2010 Domaine les Pallières Au petit bonheur France, Rhône, Vin de France
I am sure was worth the 90 point mentions last summer when first released, but its showing the typical signs of a Rose' after its first year.
Its still drinkable, and some have a palate even for the style, its not like the rose' goes bad, it just morphs as it loses the fresh aspect.
No score thus.

Still on sale (or was recently) at Kermit Lynch. If you have any drink up. If you see it, wait for 2011.
Rosé
2011 Quady North 4-2,A Rosé USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley
91 points
My first wine from Quady North, a @RhoneRangers producers in Soutthern Oregon, an area I am keen to visit this summer.

This Rosé may be sadly sold out, at $<15 a bottle is a steal for a high quality true Rosé. And fun to drink!
Call to check.

Impressive 12% alc.

The 2011 is a blend of 60% Syrah, 40% Grenache, picked early and pressed for Rosé.
Whatever the 'very small amount of r.s. to offset naturally high acidity' is (numbers not disclosed) its very low,
and/or balanced by acid (#s not disclosed) as I generally am sensitive to RS and not a fan.

The color is a beautiful light to medium pink, like watermelon flesh.
On the nose one gets confection/hard candy notes (very grenache like) , watermelon, and fresh strawberry.
In The Mouth; a fun but not simplistic delight. Watermelon Jolly Rancher, strawberry, white peach and some minerality.

For those pundits who say we can't make great Rosé in the US for <$20, or in this case <$15, eat your words.
I'll stack this against many $15 Provence any day.
Rosé
2011 Zaca Mesa Z Gris USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
91 points
Grenache based rose'.
Bright watermelon pink in color.
Fresh nose of wild strawberry, wet stone, lime zest.
Bright flavors of strawberry, white peach, citrus, some wonderful minerality and lingering acidity.
Highly drinkable solo. Also pair with summer fare, or friends at sunset.

Definitely one of the standouts in the Rose' panel.
Rosé
2011 Bonny Doon Vineyard Vin Gris de Cigare USA, California, Central Coast
90 points
Snagged another bottle at Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa for a steal of $12, b/c I have been too busy to re-order.
Having too much fun drinking to repeat tasting notes, see mine from last tasting :)
Rosé
2011 Lucques Rosé USA, California, North Coast
92 points
I didn't get the story on why Wind Gap bottled this under a second label, guessing the price point. A stunning Rose' at a steal of a price at $18, and some still left online.

Native yeast, 100% whole cluster, concrete fermented, aged 5 months in a mix of stainless, concrete, and neutral oak.
A blend of 45% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 10% Counoise from Alder Springs, and 25% Trousseau Gris, a gray/white grape from Jura, France, grown across the street from me,
in the Fannuchi Vineyard.

Color is a blend of light strawberry and orange, just slightly cloudy.
The nose is a fragrant mix of tomato vine, strawberry, raspberry.
Its bright, crisp and refreshing in the mouth with watermelon, strawberry, bright cherry, lingering finish that leaves the mouth watering, and the glass quickly empty.

12.2% Alc means you can finish the bottle. Likely quickly.

A brilliant summer sipper, I'd throw a few in cellar for the holidays as well. Drinks wonderfully solo, but would pair well with many summer lighter & grilled fares.

Flight 3 - Other (10 notes)

Rosé
2011 Gaia Agiorgitiko 14-18h Greece, Peloponnisos
91 points
A Rosé made from (Greek) Agiorgitiko varietal. The clever name refers to the number of hours on the skins - 14-18. (packaging note - one of the better looking screwcaps.)
(Yes, this is my 2nd tasting note; its also part of my ongoing May Rosé panel.)

Color is a vibrant light to medium pink.
Expressive Nose of Watermelon, Strawberry, Hint of Wet Stone
In The Mouth: Bright but not overwhelming acidity that makes this an easy quaffer. A fun picnic right on your tastebuds with
watermelon Jolly Rancher, fresh strawberry, some notes of minerality. A pleasing finish that makes you want more.

A Wonderful Rosé that will delight almost any wine drinker with half a palate, your wine geek friends will go 'ooooo' over a varietal they have never had.
Do buy some if you can.
Rosé
2011 Pueblo Del Sol Tannat Rosé Uruguay, Canelones, Juanicó
91 points
Looking for an inexpensive, interesting Rosé - look no further. The Pueblo del Sol Tannat from Uruguay is a keeper, and it's Rosé is one as well. Best of all, Bay area and LA wine lovers can get it at K&L. (<100 bottles left.)

At <$10 it drinks as well as most Rosé twice the price.

Color is a medium pink with faint salmon tinge.
On The Nose one gets watermelon, bright cherry notes, rose petal.
In The Mouth its a burst of mouthwatering of tart watermelon jolly rancher, young strawberry, pomegranate.
The wine delivers bright fruit on the front palate, nice balance mid palate, and a lingering acidity on the finish, that makes you reach for more. And more. And more.

Recommendation: Buy a case. Now. This will easily hold, and deliver through Christmas and the Holidays, and all Turkey needs some tart, bright Rosé.

I am very impressed with this brand, ordering their Sauvignon Blanc as well, for my June SB panel.
Rosé
2011 Field Stone Petite Sirah Rosé Heritage Block USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
91 points
A rare beast, this Rosé of Petite Sirah is wonderful, and unexpected.

The color is a dark pink to light red, vibrant, clear and smile invoking.
On the nose one picks up freshly picked strawberry, rose petal, and a hint of wet stone.
In The Mouth - its bright and zingy. Bing cherry, cranberry, hibiscus agua fresca.
Its bright front, mid and finish. The good acidity numbers show through, and the 4 months
(surely neutral) barrel aging give it some complexity that softens the acid and helps some
minerality, concentration s and roundness.

Bravo, buy some before gone.

Note to self - always thought of Field Stone as a Alexander Valley Cab house, must get out and taste more of their portfolio, if it follows like this.

2011 Muscardini Cellars Sangiovese Rosato Alice's Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
91 points
Another standout Rosé and evidence the Italians need to be shifting more Sangiovese grapes to Rosato! (and Californians!)

To The Eye: A pale, vibrant pink that captures the light and your eye.
One The Nose: Fragrant layers of Apple, fresh strawberry, citrus peel.
In The Mouth: A cornucopia of flavor profiles: citrus, watermelon, fresh tart cherries, green apple, newly picked strawberries.
The finish is bright, and expressive and mouthwatering, making you come back for more. And more.

12.8% alc. Only 300 cases made. Recommend grabbing a few bottles at winery or Bottle Barn, pronto!
Rosé
2011 Acorn Rosato Alegría Vineyards USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
90 points
This Rosé is a wonderful vineyard blend of 54% Sangiovese, 25% Dolcetto, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Viognier
Partial Barrel fermented (Dolcetto) and stainless, and then combined and aged in neutral oak. A blend of Saignee of Dolcetto, 20%, the rest field blend crushed, with over night skin contact then pressed.

12.6% alc.

To The Eye: The color is a lively bright medium pink.
On the nose: Cranberry, rose petals, fresh cherry.
In The Mouth: Bright front palate of cherry, raspberry, a pleasant textured mid palate, with a bright lingering finish of citrus and plum.

This Rosé drinks wonderfully standalone, will pair with a nice range of summer foods, and has the acidity to easily last into the 2012 release, if not overlap it. In fact it might even get a bit better. You'd be remiss not to drink a few bottles over the summer, and lay 1-2 down for Thanksgiving and Holidays. (Rosé is a very versatile pairing wines.)

2011 Alexander Valley Vineyards Sangiovese Dry Rosé of Sangiovese USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
89 points
My first Rosé from AVV and pleased. A great QPR at only $14.
5 hours skin contact, fermented in stainless.

To The Eye: A bright light pink.
On The Nose: Strawberry, cherry, plum, hint of banana notes (yeast strain selection?)
In The Mouth: At first I thought it was the acid, but there does appear to be a A tiny bit of effervescence, done by intent with a little C02 I am sure, for a little extra mouthfeel.
Zippy front palate, good weight mid palate, and a good finish. Bright cherry, strawberry.

An easy drinking, fun porch pounder, to take to a BBQ or Picnic.

Not sure how one calls a wine with a pH of 3.43 and a TA of .67 'lacking acid' though.

Rosé
2011 Peterson Winery Rosé Bradford Mountain Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
89 points
Love Peterson's zero manipulation statements on their website. "No soul-less wines" shows through.
This Rosé is a blend of Mourvedre, Zin, Cabernet, and tiny amounts of Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah.

The cool 2011 Vintage played well for making Rosé, even from warmer climates like Dry Creek.
This blend, harvested between 13-18th, is only 12.5% alc, and amazing acidity.

To The Eye: Color is fiery bright pink
On The Nose: Strawberry, White Peach, and some wet stone.
In The Mouth: Lots of bright red fruit, that make the mouth water. Pleasant strawberry on the front palate, some minerality, lots of acidity on the mid and finish.
This Rosé I think will do even better over the late summer and fall months as the acidity softens and integrates.

Another Rosé to buy and drink now, and leave a few bottles hidden until Thanksgiving.
Rosé
N.V. Graveyard Vineyards Tombstone Pink USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
86 points
This non vintage Rosé is my first wine from Paso Robles producer Graveyard Vineyards.
Its a saignee (bleed off) of 50% Syrah, 50% Cabernet.

The color is bit dark for a Rosé, a light raspberry red.
The nose has ripe strawberry, ripe red fruit, raspberry, plum. Faint minty/herbal note detected.
In the mouth its viscous, with very ripe fruit, rich strawberry a slight sweetness mid palate, that finishes dry.

It's not my personal style of Rosé, but I represent the minority of wine buyers geeky palate.
Its a very drinkable wine for $15 that many will enjoy, and should be tried, and if one likes it, purchased.
The world has many shades of pink!

Another standout wine during my May Rosé series tasting. Rosé can be hard to pull off, so kudos to winemaker for their first.
I haven't gone through all my Pinot Rosé yet, but this one is one of the best so far, and stands in the top of the overall pack.

To The Eye: A light pink, with a pleasant salmon orange hue
On The Nose: Expressive nose of fresh strawberries, white peach, rose petals.
In The Mouth: Bright, fun, and (too) easy to drink. A red fruit bowl of strawberry, fresh raspberry, bright cherry, pomegranate.

Previous vintage, showing very well.
Color: slightly cloudy light orange

A saignée of their 2010 Pinot Noir. Very age worthy.

A decent, but not remarkable rose' for the price, and I assume larger qty. Whomever made the comment 'best state side rose' yet) really must not have tried much.
Dark pink color, nose of watermelon and cherry.
Slight perception of spritz and heat, but decent mid palate and finish.
If the grocery store has French, buy it. Otherwise this will do.
Rosé

A fairly simple Rosé, saignee style (juice bleed).

To the Eye: Medium pink color.
On the Nose: Hints of watermelon, cherry, tiny hint of spice
In The Mouth: Bright acid, a tadit thin in flavor, texture. Surprised not more complexity in mouth for neutral oak partial ferment.
A reasonable summer quaffer, that should last until next spring.

fermented with native yeast

Light pink color
Muted nose, hints of watermelon, citrus
Super bright acid, that mellows after opening. Tart finish with bright lemon.
This would benefit from a bit more bottle time to soften, and will easily last until the 2013 season and beyond.

Flight 5 - Bordeaux (3 notes)

Rosé
2011 Kelley & Young Kathleen Rose Robert Young Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
90 points
This is the 3rd year I have enjoyed this Rosé, it was one of my introductions to the warm and gracious Kathleen Rose Young at an event. I was impressed then, and remain so now.

I find that Bordeaux based Rosé can be a challenge, especially when coming from hot CA climates, and trying to stay true to a lighter, low alcohol style.
The cool 2011 Vintage should help produce some stunning Bordeaux wines, in a more old world style, if Vintners don't over monkey with it.

To the Eye: A vibrant pink with salmon orange tinge
On the Nose: Notes of watermelon, strawberry, raspberry
In The Mouth: Bright and Vibrant. Bright cherry and strawberry. Pleasant fruit on the front palate, mid palate combines both texture (bravo for neutral oak) and brightness,
with a finish that is zippy, lingering, and fun. I don't get any hint of oak on the finish, although tasting notes mention this.

A wonderful summer wine to watch the sunset, pair with light fare. The brightness and acidity will easily carry this Rosé through the winter and beyond, so don't hesitate to put a few bottles away, Rosé is a must for Thanksgiving.
Rosé
2010 Château de Fontenille Bordeaux Clairet France, Bordeaux, Bordeaux Clairet
89 points
I am not am expert on Bordeaux, the region and varietals not being my fave, but a Clairet it appears is not really a rose' - although damn close.
Other than being a darker red, which logically one would assume means longer skin contact after crushing, its not clear to me if anything else is truly different, or what would, vinfiication wise, seperate them. Nonetheless, since I am not doing a 'clairet panel, it will go into the Rose' one .:)

In many ways a hybrid of rose' and red wine, and perhaps closer to a light red, there is indeed a distinction from Rose'. (Is saignee allowed..?)

This Clairet is 100% Cab Franc, which gives some unique character.

To The Eye: A light, clear red, with ruby tinge.
On The Nose: Expressive red fruit, black cherry, plum,
In The Mouth: Black Raspberry, spice, the most subtle hint of green pepper. It has a pleasant front, mid palate, and finish. Always approachable and enjoyable.

This would pair very well with BBQ, marrying the fruit and acid, with smoked meat and sauce.

2011 Inspiration Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
89 points
I was in the winery when this Cabernet fruit came in; small berries, ripened to 23-24 brix, with lots of hang time, picked at the end of the season.
It had all the makings of a great Rosé (not to mention an old world style balanced Cabernet.)

Barrel fermented, this very small production is a gem.

A clear, pretty, medium orange/cranberry color.
On the Nose: Rose petals. tomato vine, plum and spice
In The Mouth: Cherry mixed with Jalapeno and Bell Pepper notes. Excellent acidity buoyed by a round mouthfeel.

Nicely done!

Rosé
2010 Anaba Grenache Turbine Pink Sonoma Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Although the new vintage has been released, the 2010 release is still showing fairly well.
100% Grenache Rosé
Darker Orange-Pink color.
Pleasing Nose of cherry, strawberry, citrus peel.
In the mouth it shows strawberry, spice,
Finish has a touch of heat, but good acidity that lingers.
Would pair well with food. Recommend drinking any left.

2011 Cline Cellars Mourvèdre Rosé USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County
87 points
Interesting, rare Rosé of 100% Mourvedre. 13.5% alc.

Color is a pretty, very pale pink.
Nose was a bit funky at first pouring, but quickly blew off. Still has a petrol like quality, that I would attribute to a Riesling, odd, but nice.
Underneath is watermelon, cherry notes.
In The Mouth: A medley of cranberry, plum, citrus. Its simple, clean, and bright, a nice summer quaffer.

Great price, worth a bottle or two for your summer picnic in the park.
Rosé
2011 Minassian-Young Rosé USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles
88 points
The first wine I have had from Minassian Young Vineyards: do need to try more. Great website and stated philosophies.

Previous vintages are called a 'grenache' rose' - since this is 65% Grenache and 34% Cinsault, I input it as a blend.
13.3% alc

To The Eye: light-medium pink color.
On The Nose: was a bit funky when first opened (tad high sulfur?) but with in a few minutes blew off. One now gets ripe red fruit, strawberry.
In the Mouth; watermelon, apple, red fruit.
Rosé
2011 Caves d'Esclans Whispering Angel France, Provence, Côtes de Provence
87 points
While the 2011 Whispering Angel didn't live up to some of the buzz I had heard, and haven't had some of the previous vintages, the CT 'scores' here are harsh.
14% alc
Its light in color, aroma and flavor, but drinkable overall...best in mid 50s temps.

Color: a very very pale pink. Skin contact had to be very short.
Nose: a bit muted, notes of confectionary sugar, cherry, tomato vine
In The Mouth: cherry, spice.

Pair with a salad, pizza, or simple summer fare.

2010 Domaine de Terrebrune Bandol Rosé France, Provence, Bandol
91 points
I cant claim a lot of experience with Bandol rose', and the new 2011 is released it appears, but this has held up better than most of the other 2010 vintages I have tasted, US and Rhone.

Light Orange-Pink color
Nose is unique, and interesting: tangerine, cantaloupe, wet stone
In The Mouth: excellent roundness and mouthfeel, one of the best I can recall in a Rosé this panel, combined with good acidity.
Peach, melon, apple. Nice. Must compare to a current vintage, but one of the best examples of a Rosé going into its 2nd year, have has this year.

2011 Quivira Rosé North Coast USA, California, North Coast
92 points
As I come to the final lap of the Rosé tasting, doubling back to one I tasted and loved in March, before the May/June Rosé series.
With so many Rosé behind me, the standout quality of the Quivira release is noteworthy.

A blend of 51% Mourvedre, 18% Carignane, 18% Counoise, 7% Grenache, 6% Syrah

To The Eye: Light salmon pink
On The Nose: Fresh strawberry, watermelon. Notes of wet stone, citrus, white peach.
In The Mouth: A delight, especially for the bright acid driven Rosé fan, but one almost anyone who has a decent wine palate will enjoy.
Bright, fresh, fun, but also layered with nuance. Cherry, strawberry, lingering citrus, and pleasing notes of minerality.

One of my favorites of the panel, and one I want to stock a case of to last now through December.

Interesting, complex, bit unique Rosé in the May/June series.

100% Grenache Rosé

Color is darker for a Rosé, light red
Nose of red berry, pomegranate, herbal notes
In The Mouth: Salinity, red fruit, and spice

Good food pairing wine; will stand up to burgers, BBQ, hearty summer fare
Rosé
2010 Gérard Bertrand Vin de Pays d'Oc Gris Blanc France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
90 points
A wonderful rose' from a varietal almost non existent in the US, Grenache Gris.
The wine has a very pale color with just a tint of orange.
The nose is soft, with notes of orange dessert like sherbert or jello, candied citrus, and honeysuckle.
In the mouth it tastes dry, although the faintest bit of RS may be present to balance the wonderful acid.
The mouth feel is soft, with pleasant notes of tangerine and white peach. The finish lingers.

13% alc.

Very pleased to see tartrates in the bottom of the bottle, also known as acid crystals, or 'wine diamonds' which means the wine wasn't cold stabilized.

People thinking this isn't worth $12...? not sure what you wanted for the modest amount.
