Krug Dinner

Yusho - Chicago IL

Tasted July 23, 2012 by Burgundy Al with 601 views

Introduction

Great dinner from the folks at LVMH and Knightsbridge. Fascinating cross-section of the Krug lineup at one of my favorite Chicago restaurants. It was quite warm today in Chicago and just a little too hot even in the restaurant.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
92 points
Pale strawberry aromas followed by strawberry and apple flavors. Great textures with a light sensation, but at the same time also a powerful finish.

Flight 2 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
2000 Krug Champagne Clos du Mesnil France, Champagne
94 points
Lots of fresh citrus aromas with background floral hints. Flavors of poached apple and pear as well as candied lemon peel. Very powerful and energetic on finish.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1998 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
92 points
This is a very rich, very powerful Krug. Slightly floral with ripe apple and intense spice. Apple and pear on palate with some toasty, bready character. Dense, nuanced finish. Great side-by-side with its 2000 counterpart; today I preferred the 2000.
White - Sparkling
2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Apple and lemon aromas, with similar fruit on palate. Very vibrant fruit, racy and lean. Very well textured. great contrast with the more powerful, more rich 1998. I preferred this 2000 tonight.

Flight 4 (1 note)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
91 points
Big, fat fruit aromas and flavors. Lush and slightly tropical. Perhaps the temp in the restaurant (slightly warm) and the temp of the wine (not quite cold enough) didn't optimize the overall experience.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut Collection France, Champagne
91 points
Perhaps not my preferred style of Champagne, or more accurately 1989 might not be my favorite vintage given its overall ripe character. Sweet with a cake-like character, others thought it showed like shortbread. Big and fat, great in this style if you like the bready and fat styled Champagne.
White - Sparkling
1985 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Very clean lemon and apple aromas, followed by similar fruit on palate. Modest spice, but very clean and precise from start-to-finish with great energy and textures. Surprisingly fresh.

Flight 6 - A few Bonus Bottles (4 notes)

White
1980 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
91 points
Great color and fill level of approx 1.5 cm. Summer flowers on nose followed by ripe fruit and some charming earthiness. Palate also showed sweet orchard and stone fruit with an equal complement of earthy flavors. Very well textured, very good finish. I was amazed at how fresh this still showed, given both its age and the quality of the 1980 vintage.
Red
1954 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
92 points
Decanted an hour+ before serving. Incredibly dark color. Black fruit aromas with good floral background. Starts with big and powerful fruit on palate with a slightly sweet, slightly caramelized character. Picks up elegance from middle to end, finishing with a real sense of charm and finesse.
Red
1976 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
94 points
Very glad this was decanted. Much like another bottle from last summer, this was both incredibly powerful and harmonious.
Red
1978 Maison Leroy Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Library release, probably from 2008. Started with great baking spice and earthy aromas that immediately made me think of a great Vosne-Romanee. I was off by a narrow lane! Slightly more advanced on palate, but this showed an elegant, spicy finish.
