Introduction

Wines are tasted double blind, the obvious exception being those you bring. Each flight is tasted, discussed and unveiled prior to moving on to the next flight.

Flight 1 - Warm ups (3 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
2009 Gérard Bertrand Crémant de Limoux Rosé France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Crémant de Limoux
89 points
This has got the palest yellowish pink color I have ever seen- this looks like a rosé only by the slimmest of margins. Aromas of melon, pear and florals. Has a subtle Riesling-like petrol quality, but also peach, melon and mineral nuances. Bright acidity with a fine bead. I guessed Languedoc (and should have ended the night right there on a high note). L1236 5165.
White
2010 Gérard Bertrand Chardonnay Réserve Spéciale France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
88 points
Pale color. Notes of apple, white fruit, perhaps marzipan, and citrus. Tangy acidity; flavors of pink grapefruit and orchard fruit with a decent finish.
White
2010 Gérard Bertrand Viognier Réserve Spéciale France, Languedoc Roussillon, Vin de Pays d'Oc
86 points
Straw yellow color. Pear, white fruit and mineral notes with a floral overtone. Flavors of pear and tropical fruit- has a sweetness akin to fruit cocktail syrup but enough acidity to balance it out. Guessed Grenache Blanc.

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

I should note that others enjoyed this flight, particularly the first three wines, much more than Domino and I.

Red
2007 Paul Hobbs Syrah Kick Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County
86 points
Inky purple color. Aromas of incense, dark fruit and garrigue with meaty undertones. Also shows quite a bit of alcohol, perhaps served a touch too warm. Full-bodied, with flavors of syrupy black fruit, roasted herbs and blackberry; cough syrup. Guessed Petite Sirah.
Red
2007 Robert Biale Sangiovese Nonna's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
85 points
Deep ruby color. Cherry and red currant notes with pine resin and medicinal overtones. Medium-bodied with flavors of cherry cough syrup and candied red fruit.
Red
2010 Domaine Brusset Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
87 points
Electric purple ruby color. Smells of cherry cough syrup, blueberry and blackberry. Gets more syrupy/spoofilated as it sits. Medium- to full-bodied with flavors of cherry, clay, garrigue and ripe red fruit with way too much alcohol. Guessed Syrah.
Red
2005 Vitanza Brunello di Montalcino Tradizione Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
Deep crimson core, turning much lighter toward the meniscus. Lovely bouquet featuring black fruit, lavender, rose petals, tobacco and red currant. Medium-bodied, with a nice mix of red and black fruit on the palate, as well as flavors of herbs and white pepper. Lengthy finish. Quite a bit of acid too- needs food- guessed Sangiovese.
Red
2006 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
90 points
Opaque inky crimson color. Notes of black fruit, incense, blue fruit and roasted herbs. Full-bodied with flavors of roasted meat and dark fruit. Shut down quite hard as it sat in the glass, dominated by vanilla qualities and really nothing else. Guessed Syrah.

Flight 3 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2008 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
Garnet color. Red and black fruit notes, also herbs/garrigue, with an earthy undertone. Develops a subtle vegetal quality as it sits. Medium-bodied with herbs, red fruit and pepper flavors. Guessed S. Rhone.

The vegetal note does have that wet hay/horse blanket quality (brettanomyces), though it wasn't too distracting here.

Red
2007 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Garnet color. Initially a bit reticent, this took some time in the glass to open. Herbal, with green bell pepper overtones and hints of black fruit and cigar box underneath. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced featuring black fruit, cherry and currants. Medium+ finish. I thought this was Cabernet that was just a bit underripe, but I did not think old world.
Red
2008 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
86 points
Crimson color. Aromas of cherry cough syrup, herbs, grapefruit and sour red fruit. Medium-bodied, with high acidity and weedy red fruit flavors that develop a sour edge as this sits in the glass. While a few of us found this sour, some did not. I was shocked when this was unveiled.

Red
2008 Martín Códax Bierzo Cuatro Pasos Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo
86 points
Inky crimson color. Meaty red and dark fruit notes with vanilla overtones. Full-bodied with firm tannins and flavors of red fruit, new oak and vanilla. Simple.
Red
1998 Paloma Syrah USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District
91 points
Deep crimson color. Lovely bouquet of garrigue and black fruit, with an enjoyable funky/barnyardy undertone. Medium- to full-bodied with flavors of dark fruit, herbs and earth. Finishes well. Until we began unveiling the wines, I thought this was our Beaucastel.

Flight 4 - Nonblind dinner/dessert wines (2 notes)

R&D made pulled pork and slaw, and others contributed with potato salad and from-scratch cherry pie.

Red
2005 Robert Biale Petite Sirah Royal Punishers USA, California, Napa Valley
85 points
Inky purple color. Hot. Perfumed black fruit notes but high alc too. Firm, sweet tannins, with lots of dark fruit and alcohol on the palate. I don't know that more time will bring this in balance.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1999 Grande Maison Monbazillac Cuvée du Château France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac
88 points
Golden honey color. Aromas of pineapple, tropical fruit, honey and orange zest. Medium-bodied, with tropical fruit, honey and apricot flavors carrying through the finish. Decent acidity; finishes on the short side though. Drink now-2017.
