White
2011 Alois Lageder Moscato Giallo Vogelmaier Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Lago di Caldaro

Classic moscato nose, grapey. Dry with lively acidity but ultimately a bit one-dimensional.

Flight 2 - Ambrogio & Giovanni Folonari Tenute (4 notes)

Red
2004 Tenuta di Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva La Forra Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
84 points
Ripe, ready with a good fruit aspect and integrated tannins. Tobacco on the finish. Feels a touch flat on the mid-palate and lacks vibrancy.
Red
2009 TorCalvano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Italy, Tuscany, Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
87 points
Tooth coating, firm tannin but not aggressive. Juicy dark fruit trying to burst through but will need some time.
Red
2007 Tenuta La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
85 points
Disappointing, lacks vibrancy and freshness. Muted fruit and obtrusive oak.
White
2010 Tenute del Cabreo Chardonnay La Pietra Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
86 points
Gentle oak nose, fruit driven palate with tropical notes of guava and apricot but a complimentary smoky overlay and nutty finish

Flight 3 - Antinori (3 notes)

Red
2007 Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva Badia a Passignano Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
88 points
Voluptuous, round and full bodied. Firm, mouth filling tannin but has lovely fruit. Powerful and substantial blackcurrant flavour.
Red
2004 Antinori Tignanello Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
Earthy, savoury, tomato, cherry, structured and powerful. More of a bruiser than an elegant wine.
Red
2010 Tormaresca Primitivo Torcicoda Salento IGT Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT
85 points
Fruit and plenty of it but lacks any complexity. Good, simple drinking with satisfying acidity.

Flight 4 - Argiolas (4 notes)

White
2011 Argiolas Iselis Bianco Italy, Sardinia, Nasco di Cagliari
87 points
Much better with riper fruit. Pomelo, lemon with steely acidity. A touch hot (14.5%) on the bitter finish.
White
2011 Argiolas Vermentino di Sardegna Is Argiolas Italy, Sardinia, Vermentino di Sardegna
84 points
Good body with biting acidity. Firm, but simple fruit and a touch bitter. Lacks excitement.
Red
2010 Argiolas Iselis Rosso Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
89 points
Ripe, dark and red fruit nose. Bitter chocolate with soft but powerful tannin. Full bodied, very ripe palate and fresh acidity. Holds the 14% with ease.
Red
2003 Argiolas Turriga Isola dei Nuraghi IGT Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
92 points
Very good wine, refined but powerful. Huge, teeth coating tannins but very silky. Blockbuster dark fruit with blackberries, blackcurrant layered with tobacco and lashings of oak. Still needs another decade.

Flight 5 - Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo (4 notes)

Red
2003 Jacopo Biondi-Santi Schidione Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
Sour, earthy nose. Huge tannins and blockbuster fruit. There's some development but plenty more to come. Tough to broach now and would leave another decade.
Red
2005 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
88 points
Well evolved already, sour cherry and leather. Tannins are well integrated and the lightness of this wine suggests there is little to be gained from leaving it longer.
Red
2007 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Fuller, fruitier nose with a more appealing palate than 2005. Juicy, crisp cranberry, raspberry and blackcurrant. Firm tannins just starting along their path of integration. Long, elegant finish and a fine future ahead.
Red
2009 Jacopo Biondi-Santi Morellino di Scansano Castello di Montepo Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Morellino di Scansano
84 points
Earthy nose, powerful but with little elegance. Aggressive tannin and the wine is harsh and unapproachable. This may come together with time but is painful at the moment.

Flight 6 - Ca' del Bosco (3 notes)

White - Sparkling
2004 Ca' del Bosco Franciacorta Cuvée Annamaria Clementi Italy, Lombardia, Franciacorta DOCG
84 points
7 years lees ageing gives a rich nose backed by apples. Green apple and lees palate with a full body.
White - Sparkling
2007 Ca' del Bosco Franciacorta Vintage Collection Dosage Zero Italy, Lombardia, Franciacorta DOCG
83 points
Slightly yeasty on the nose but palate is bready and appley. Not too bad for zero dosage and is reasonably balanced.
Red
2003 Ca' del Bosco Pinero Sebino IGT Italy, Lombardia, Sebino IGT
83 points
Garnet colour just fading. Evolved nose. Tannic, lacking fruit but not showing any development other than a touch of tobacco on the finish.

Flight 7 - Carpenè Malvolti (4 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Carpenè Malvolti Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore Extra Dry Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Superiore
87 points
Light nose but very fresh and clean.. Good acidity with pears and sweet brioche flavours coming to the fore and comes alive on the fresh finish.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Carpenè Malvolti Prosecco di Conegliano Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Conegliano
84 points
Simple and uncomplicated but well made fizz.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Carpenè Malvolti Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze
90 points
Very good, rich and ripe. Well balanced with good weight and density. Crisp acidity and holds interest through the mid-palate to the end of a refined finish.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Carpenè Malvolti Rosé Cuvée Brut Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT
83 points
Robust red fruit with a bitter finish. Not very subtle!

Flight 8 - Donnafugata (4 notes)

White
2011 Donnafugata Contessa Entellina Vigna di Gabri Italy, Sicily, Contessa Entellina
87 points
Delicious fragrant nose, lightly elegant palate, stone fruit and a splash of florality. Could do with a touch more acidity but this is delicate and appealing.
Red
2011 Donnafugata Sicilia Sherazade Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
84 points
fresh, crunchy, simple fruit. Light tannin with fair acidity but dies on the finish.
Red
2008 Donnafugata Contessa Entellina Tancredi Italy, Sicily, Contessa Entellina
88 points
Tannic, full bodied, grippy, earthy, oaky. Blackcurrant dominated. Young wine and needs much more time but should integrate eventually.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2010 Donnafugata Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé Italy, Sicily, Passito di Pantelleria
93 points
Superb. A wonderful example of how ripe, fresh, rich and exciting Zibibo can be. Apricot, honey in abundance with Seville orange like acidity. It has a wonderfully rich texture wrapped around the long marmalade finish.

Flight 9 - Gaja (4 notes)

Red
2007 Gaja Barolo Dagromis Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
Fragrant and perfumed nose with a powerfully structured palate. Tannins are firm but not too obtrusive and give the fruit a chance to come through. There's some elegance that should become more apparent with time.
Red
2009 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
86 points
Perfumed nose, palate is tannic and tough but lacks the fruit to power through and fades quickly.
Red
2010 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Magari Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
88 points
Riper fruit and less tannin although there's still plenty in there to give support and is much more integrated silky. Blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum. Long, structured finish.
Red
2007 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
89 points
Smooth, firm structured tannins framing the full fruit profile that is dark and brooding. Powerful wine that should have a long future.

Flight 10 - Jermann (3 notes)

White
2011 Jermann Pinot Bianco Venezia Giulia IGT Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
88 points
Very pleasant, balanced, creamy bright fruit with firm weight. An insistent finish that displays elegance and finesse.
White
2009 Jermann Capo Martino In Ruttaris Venezia Giulia IGT Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
92 points
Striking nose reminiscent of a Clare Valley Riesling. Lime, chalk and a pleasant rubber character. Well balanced palate, elegant, weighty and serious. Long flinty finish full of minerality.
White
1997 Jermann Vintage Tunina Venezia Giulia IGT Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
95 points
The nose is almost like a Clare Valley Riesling, full of lime, chalk and tension but with a veneer of light smoke. Fascinating palate right from the first sip with a profusion of meadow flowers and ripe fruits with a rich vein of honey and just edging into maturity. There's a remarkable richness to this wine that apparently doesn't see any oak ageing or undergo any malo, but perhaps that explains the clean and focussed acidity that balances the wine beautifully. Elegant whilst retaining an electrifying power that suggests there is more to come.

Flight 11 - Masi (3 notes)

Red
2009 Masi Campofiorin Italy, Veneto, Veronese IGT
85 points
Fruity, juicy, velvety light tannins. Decent effort.
Red
2007 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Costasera Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
86 points
Powerful nose, rich, ripe and dark fruit. Light tannin and high acidity. Big and powerful, huge weight but a bit sluggish.
Red
2006 Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Costasera Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
86 points
Powerful nose with an even bigger palate. Touch tannins and big fruit with very apparent alcohol. This is a big wine that will always be obvious and struggle to reach elegance.

Flight 12 - Michele Chiarlo (4 notes)

White
2011 Michele Chiarlo Gavi Rovereto Italy, Piedmont, Gavi
82 points
Playful nose with an elusive quality. Simple flavours that are quite extracted with a non-existent finish. Disappointing.
Red
2009 Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza La Court Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza
86 points
Ripe, rich red fruit supported by blackberry. Fair tannins with crunchy acidity and a sympathetic oak treatment balances the wine well. Young and needs time but is way overpriced at £36
Red
2009 Michele Chiarlo Barbaresco Reyna Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Delicate, transparent colour belies the intense nose. The palate is sheer elegance, it's light but with complexity and has an underlying tension and depth. Constantly evolving through the mid palate and on to the delicious finish.
Red
2006 Michele Chiarlo Barolo Riserva Cerequio Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
95 points
Wow, what a nose, beguiling, floral, red fruit and a whiff of oak. Firm tannin wrapped around the light but insistent fruit, strawberry, vanilla and a splash of balsamic. Needs more time of course but this is a truly great wine.

Flight 13 - Pio Cesare (4 notes)

Red
2000 Pio Cesare Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Very pretty nose with an elegant, refined floral character. Developing well and tannins are softening and moulding into the wine. Fine tobacco character and a long finish but remains powerful rather than elegant.
Red
2008 Pio Cesare Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Chewy! This is an assault on my palate with brutish force. This could have potential but right now I can't get past those tannins.
Red
2008 Pio Cesare Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
87 points
Firm tannic grip with quite juicy fruit and high acidity. An obvious wine with plenty of oak.
Red
2010 Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
88 points
Fruity nose which is also carried through the palate by light tannin. Juicy strawberry, chocolate and oak with a fine finish.

Flight 14 - Tenuta San Guido (4 notes)

Red
2009 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
93 points
Wonderfully silky and polished. Compelling wine with elegance and grace. Lithe supple tannin in harmony with layers of fruit and supporting oak.

Red
2010 Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
Rich, silky and ripe black fruit with a mocha coffee stratum lying over toasty oak, cedar and tobacco.
Red
2010 Tenuta San Guido Le Difese Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
82 points
Sour nose, soft tannin and red fruit. Lacks composure or style.
Red
2004 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
94 points
Developing nose, nuanced and elegant. Palate is weighty yet light, powerful but elegant. Integrated and balanced already but this has a long future ahead. Superb
