Introduction

Met up with some friends at Domaine Wine Storage for the usual end of month wine fest. This Friday, however, also featured some wines from the VinConnect portfolio. Gabe Barkley poured a nice selection of young Italian gems from their portfolio and the rest of us brought along a wide ranging selection of bottles. A fun evening as usual.

Flight 1 - Opening Wines (4 notes)

Rosé
2011 Bedrock Wine Co. Mourvèdre Ode to Lulu Rosé USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
90 points
An excellent bottle of rose. Fresh red fruit tones with elegant floral and spice tones gave this great energy and elegance. Well done.
Red
1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Another strong showing from this much overlooked vintage. Had really earthy tones on the nose with a brambly red fruit core. The palate was in great harmony with softish tannin, spicy red fruit, and the ever-present earthiness. Loved it.
Red
1995 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Drank alongside the 1994, this was far more primary. The fruit had a deeper pitch to it and the wine was less funky overall. The palate was packed full with dark fruit, subtle tobacco, tilled soil, and game. This probably has more life left than the 1994, but wasn't as approachable for my palate. Still great stuff.
Red
1999 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
This had been slow oxidized for about 5 hours. Nose was elegant and rich with good red fruit - mostly cherries and cranberries. The palate was in a great place. Tones were elegant, and it had a beautiful weightlessness to it that I always look for with Burgundies. Definitely got some Gevrey hung game and dark spices on the palate which were a nice treat, too.

Flight 2 - Piedmont (3 notes)

Red
2007 Massolino Barolo Parafada Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
Still very primary this was showing off subtle tar and cranberry notes on the nose. Palate was rich and inviting with warm spices, dark fruit and some truffles. Fruit seemed to be powerful and pure...with time, can see this rounding into something excellent.
Red
2009 Giorgio Pelissero Barbaresco Vanotu Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
89 points
Holy tannin! Really rock-hard at this point with some red fruit peeking out from behind the ironclad facade. The fruit was actually VERY sweet - some were commenting how it almost felt borderline desert-like! I didn't think it was that sweet, but the fruit did have a rich and powerful twang to it that seemed to speak to the quality of the material. I have very little experience with Barbaresco that is this young, so I'm not sure what this will inevitably turn into but I was enjoying it.
Red
2006 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Barolo Vürsù Vigneto Campè Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Couldn't get a real read on this one. Was almost all acid and tannin at this point...like chewing on a wool sweater. Seemed like there was some dark fruit...somewhere...underneath the wall of tannin. Hard to really tell.

Flight 3 - Tuscany (3 notes)

Red
2004 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Santa Caterina D'Oro Vigna di Pianrosso Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
A big and muscular Brunello at this point. Dark, floral and powerful this seems to have the material to be a long distance runner. Along with the rich dark fruit profile, it had exotic baking spices some tobacco, earth and sweet floral notes woven throughout. While I don't usually think of myself as a fan of bigger styled Brunello's, this seemed to hit my palate in the right way.
Red
2007 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
This is an impressive wine. From start to finish it was the most complete wine of the day for me. A great blend of rich fruit, truffle tones, lots of exotic spices and elegant floral notes. Beautiful acid and medium tannins on the finish give this some energy and the sense that it has many, many years of life ahead of it.
Red
2008 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
90 points
Was I seduced a bit by this wines exuberant fruit? Probably. Along with a beautiful fruit profile, this had great balance with nice floral lift and subtle truffle notes on the mid-palate. Nice complexity, nice wine.

Flight 4 - Leftovers (2 notes)

Red
1999 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Superiore
92 points
This was a complex wine from start to finish. Nose had deep, dark fruit; blackberries, cherry, and plum. Complementing the dark fruit was nice minerality and herbal tones that gave the wine a nice freshness. Would have liked to spend more time with the wine, but I got the sense that while this was showing some secondary characteristics, there are still a solid 20+ years ahead of this wine. Very nice showing.
Red
2004 Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
89 points
Time will do good things to this wine as it seemed pretty closed down at this point. Nose did have some earth, tar, and floral notes but it was just too young to feature the classic Barolo tones that make it such an exciting genre of wine. Check back in 2017.
