1969 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Nose: dried red flowers with a touch of blood, a touch of chemical. Sweet, sauvage. Really special on the palate: cola and brown sugar, roast meat, saline, tomato. Just beautiful with silky tannins all the way through. Elegant and perfumed with a long gentle sweet brown finish. Nose - 4-4.5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5.5-6/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-18/20.
White - Sparkling
1990 Gosset Champagne Célebris France, Champagne
96 points
Medium yellow. Mature nose of creamy brioche, toast, pears, yeast and minerals. A touch cidery and very fresh. Gorgeous on the palate with a soft yet lively mousse. Incredibly sweet and creamy: sweet pear and ripe apple, maybe a touch of creamsicle, lots of toast and brioche. Screaming fruit: pear and cidery. Malt. Rich finish. Perfect right now. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18/20.
White
2002 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Light yellow. Huge Leflaive nose of lemon, brown spices, salty extract, and sweet oak. Deep but incredibly lively and fresh. Very spicy. Screaming on the palate with lots of lemon, lemon curd, minerals and sweet vanilla oak. Finish shows lemon and oak. Probably better in 5 years. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.
Red
1990 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
94 points
Medium orange-red. Beautiful nose of roasted fruit, spice, spice, spice, and barnyard funk. Not as big as I was expected, which is nice -very balanced and even elegant. A touch of heat. Cherry fruit and strudel. Creamy on the palate and very spicy, plush, and plummy, roast meat and more spice. Again a touch of heat. Delicious and balanced. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20.
White - Sparkling
1985 Perrier-Jouët Champagne Belle Epoque France, Champagne

From Magnum. Bready and spicy nose with baked pastry and yeast. Elegant and chunky - very substantial. Creamy malt. Soft mousse - lemon, bright citrus and bread, great grain/mouthfeel. Brown flavors and spice. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

N.V. Jacques Selosse Initial France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

(I have 'Disgorged 7/10 down, but I am not at all sure of that). Light yellow-green. Chalk, minerals, crushed shells. White dust and flowers. The nose radiates this powdery feel that I cannot describe well. Very different from any wine I have ever had. On the palate: very chalky and powdery yet creamy. I could lose myself in this palate and in this wine in general. Where was I? Oh yes, Chalky, dusty, driven and laser-like. Potent. Minerals and tight lemon. A singular wine, austere and focused yet full and round somehow. As I am just getting into Champagne, this wine was an epiphany for me, the perfect wine for my palate to learn from right now - complex, cerebral, austere - a thinking wine. I stand in awe. Game changer. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18.5/20.
White
2002 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Green and lime/lemon on nose, whipped cream or meringue, lots of sweet oak, steel and stones. Enters with lemon and lots of oak, cool, green, herbal, minerals, steel, flint. Finish of sweet lemon, oak, and steel. Very classy, oak needs a few more years to resolve. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5-5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20.
White
2003 Coche-Dury Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Very Coche. Salty, brown spice, good extract and acid, lemon, caramel. A little rough on the palate, but pretty damn good for an 03 - lots of lemon and spice, pretty tight, only a little 03 vibration or roast shows through, and only occasionally. A excellent bottle. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15.5/20.
Red
1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
92 points
Faint nose - some chemicals, meat, rubber. Palate better: roses, meat, good structure and balance, spice. Good but missing something, IMO. Inferior to the 69 Richebourg. A good wine, but not impressive, given the bottle. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.
Red
1993 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
Ruby red. Very rough and sauvage nose - really old school Red Burgundy. Horsey with hosin sauce, spice, earth, some heat. Bright raspberry-strawberry. Very burly on the palate with lots of acid and structure, sauvage and spice, plummy, meat. Good acid and soft tannins: maybe 3-5 more years and it should be perfect, but it doesn't suck now. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.
Red
1990 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
91 points
Bight Leroy fruit: raspberry and strawberry, cinnamon and sharp bright spices, but there is an odd green component that goes along with stemmy aspects that is too much for me. Very chewy on the palate: stems, plum and green pepper. Well made, but the flavor profile is weird. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 0.5-1/2 = 15.5-16/20.
Red
1993 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
88 points
I had high hopes when I got poured a glass of this, and those hope were not fulfilled. Green stems, malt, mocha - definite green pepper, spice. Still stemmy and tight on the palate, dark coffee - not too impressive. This must not be a representative bottle. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14/20.
Red
1988 Joseph Drouhin Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
Now this is more like it! Light ruby. Very spicy nose - old cherry-strawberry fruit, earth, dirt, sauvage. Palate: really pure, with sweet fruit, earth and spice. Elegant, classy, and classic. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18/20.
Red
1988 Joseph Drouhin Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
90 points
A let down after the Grands Echezeaux. Soft nose of violets, soft spice, strawberries. Probably sat too long in the glass: dried flowers, berry fruit and soft tannins. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.
Red
1993 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Partial note, nose only: Very green: vegetal, green pepper and herbal, with some Mouton blue-black fruit. Cocoa, cedar, cassis, blueberry. not impressive. Nose - 3.5-4/6.
Red
1970 Gaja Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
93 points
Cloudy ruby/red. Very secondary on the nose: banyard, plum, sun, citrus peel, tar. Rich on the palate with plum, citrus peel, tar, burnt coffee. Very dark profile with lots of acid. Citrus peel and burnt flavors on finish. Most mature and ready Gaja I have ever had - really excellent. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16.5/20.
Red
1993 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
I did not get a full note on this wine. Herbal nose, tannins, stems, dark sour cherry - pretty wound or tight by the time I got to it, which was after a while. Dusty tannins on the palate - cherry, stems, fine tannins. Still needs time to me, seems to be all structure.
Red
1971 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Just got a small taste, but this is the real deal. Soft nose, red-purple with spice. Really sublime on the palate: mouth filling and creamy with flowers, tomato, lots and lots of spice. Amazing balance. Still has sweet fruit. So plush that I don't know how to describe it. Like a red velvet carpet. I wish I got more. Mean old 71 La Tache made that 85 LT run home to Momma! Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5.5-6/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18-19/20.
Red
1990 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Is there a California wine more consistent that MB? I do not think so. Huge MB nose - herbal, plummy fruit, creamy, eucalyptus. Plummy fruit, cool, smooth mouthfeel. Very old world in feel but more interesting in flavor profile - doesn't have that annoying cedar/tobacco stuff that most Bordeaux wines have. Herbal finish, dusty tannins. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

1998 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Cuvée Creation France, Champagne
Didn't get a full note: good spice on the nose, with yeast and pear.
Red
2001 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Way way too young - tried this a couple of times tonight. Like trying to drink a red brick wall. Give it 20 years, then try again.

1999 Harlan Estate USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark with roasted blue-black fruits, dark cherry and plum, blackberry and chocolate. Too much heat. This wine is not in balance at all. For an entry level wine, this would be fine, but at this level, nope. A reminder of why I don't drink these wines anymore. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 13/20.

AP #15. Lemon and creamy nose, botrytis, baking spices, apricots, petrol, apple. Classic prum WS nose. Lovely on the palate, spice, apricots. Perfect balance, great acid. Creamy apricot finish. Sweet. Perfect. Love it. Simply one of the great wines of the world. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 18.5/20.

AP #16. Auction. From Magnum (Yes, I was drinking with Justin C tonight). A step down from the Prum. Sweet, some smoke, brown sugar and baking spices, apple. Creamier than the Prum, but less active. Palate of spice, lemon, apple and pear - soft. Spice on the finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1967 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Red-orange. Spicy on the nose. Very mature nose and palate with flavors of caramel, cinnamon. Really spicy - almost like those red atom ball candies. A mostly elegant older Sauternes. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2000 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
86 points
Lots of oak, sweet caramel and butterscotch. Not great balance - too much heat for the fruit. Not a great Yquem IMO - more ripe/roasted aspects than lively. May get better, but will never be great. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 13/20.
Red - Fortified
1977 Graham Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
85 points
Decent but not great. Shows a standard port profile, and the palate is decent, but just not an impressive showing. Nose - 3.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 12.5/20.

2001 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Partial note: nose only. Very sweet and young. Waxy and thick nose of creme brulee, marzipan, nuts, vanilla. Very creamy but clearly needs time. Seems to have the right stuff however. Nose - 5.5/6.
