Introduction

Annual mondo double blind tasting suggesting entry of $150+.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Interesting start to the evening.

Red
1990 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
96 points
Cloudy, reddish-brown tint; Cigarbox, initially thought it had lost fruit, but digging further it had it in spades, tart cranberry and blueberry, sweet liqueur, gravel, ash; palate is syrupy and fat like a ripe vintage, but acid showed well; in a great place right now. Reminded me of '90 Cheval Blanc (it's neighbor 2 doors down the block).
Red
2009 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton-Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
95 points
Ruby all the way through; cool pinot fruit, smoke, berry fruit both red and blue that is slightly candied; incredible purity, good tannic wrap, sexy fruit on the palate; a wine of subtle power, excellent balance, and sheer elegance.
Red
2001 Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Célestins France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Red core with bricking at edge; almost pure grenache I'm sure, sweetness, spiciness, and some bitterness make for a very balanced and interesting wine. Taut structure, cranberry fruit, red radish, rhubarb, and a slight green note. Having had a few other Celestins I was surprised how clean, slightly boring, and it seemed older.
Red
2003 Château Cap de Faugères France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux
90 points
Inky; oak still prominent, really ripe almost overripe, black licorice, sappy texture, alcohol showing through, blackberry, dark cherry, and firm blueberry. Good fruit and some vanilla. The ringer. I feel this showed well...even though nobody had a clue what it was.

Red
1994 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Dark core with 1/2" bricking; youthful, raw meat nose, tobacco, ash, tart berry; luxurious mouthfeel, hinting at a sandy soil, sexy and toned. By far the best example of this bottle. I even thought it could improve with some bottle age where other bottles were very ready.
Red
1996 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
97 points
Wow! The nose on this was amazing. It hits you like a freight train of sheer power and 1st Growth quality. Rich fruit, iron, blood, cigar box, mahogony, earth, stank, and leather. I just wanted to smell this all day long. Also a rich wine on the palate with fruit, chocolate, and a little green note. I thought this was Latour. Others thought Mouton. A great bottle for sure. Won the tasting ('82 won last year).
Red
1988 Domaine Trapet Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
Little color change to the light red color, looks aged; sweet, ripe, red fruit on the nose along with some rhubarb and raddish; still rich yet delicate, very nice; nearing the end of its drinking plateau, reminded me more of a Burgundian Chateauneuf ('89 Centenaire) than a Burg due to the weight and fruit profile.

Flight 2 (5 notes)

We took a break for dinner which was really delicious and came back refreshed ready to drink more.

Red
1997 Antinori Solaia Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
93 points
Dark core with 1/2" of bricking; spicy, Bordeaux nose, dark fruit, tangy berry, rich and voluptuous nose; still very tannic, extracted, fleshy, sandy soil notes, juicy and young. Must have missed the subtle Italian nuances because I was pegging this for 2000 Figeac.
Red
1990 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
Cloudy and a dark core with 1/2" bricking; sandy, rich, fat, sexy, sweet, soy; some tart fruit on the palate, cranberry, pomegranate, red currant, along with mushrooms and forest floor. I like it, but to me this was not a complete wine. It lacked a little balance as it was very fat. Prior bottle was much better and everyone was disappointed with the showing today.
Red
1986 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
flawed
Corked.
Red
1990 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
Translucent color; cedar, sandy, red fruit, red flowers, ash; tobacco is long on the finish, tannin lingers but not tannic, tails off on the finish. Palate lackes, but the nose is great. Thought it was '88 La Mission Haut Brion. Everyone was shocked when it was revealed. Another disappointing showing for a historically great bottle after the '90 Montrose. Bummer.
Red
1995 Château Trotanoy France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
94 points
Lighter red in color than other Bordeaux that evening, 1/4" bricking; pretty nose of floral red fruit; tart cherry pit on the palate, rich, long finish of red licorice, a little heat that could have been toned down by a little more chill, ashy, sexy and seductive even though the tannins are still kicking hard, sweet and slightly bitter finish for balance. Not ready yet in my opinion.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

These were backup bottles that some wanted to open. My Marcoux was trash.

Red
1995 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
flawed
Completely done. Didn't even want to taste it. Not aware of provenance.
Red
1999 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
93 points
Reddish brown color with some cloudiness; stanky nose, aged grenache-like sweetness and richness, tart berry, taut yet aged, spice, sappy and fat, and an herbal note that is overshadowed by the fruit. Lacked a little elegance for my taste. 92.5
Red
2002 Camus Pere & Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Light color to where you can read through it; tart fruit, stank; rich on palate, sappy yet tart fruit, griotte cherry; tasty, balanced, and very drinkable, but this is not a top example of what Chambertin offers. Lightest Burg of the evening.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Nothing like a little dessert at the end of things. Nice to see these as most are not fans of sweet wines at all.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Tokaj Hétszőlő Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji
92 points
Tropical and sweet with lots of peach pit and orange peel, spicy to the point of almost being tannic, balanced finishing with nice acidity. Auslese richness. Very youthful.

White - Off-dry
2000 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Herrenweg de Turckheim Vendange Tardive France, Alsace
92 points
Golden brown color; nose of creme brulee, low acid, apricot marmalade; something that reminds me of soda on the palate, and some interesting exotic fruit notes. Was told they used wild yeasts and fermentation took forever. Sweet, sappy and very rich. Thought it was '95 Pinot Gris SGN. Interesting wine.

Closing

Some interesting wines tonight. Glad we had a few more Burgs, but as usual, Bordeaux controlled the evening. You have so much Bordeaux you start thinking Solaia could be Bordeaux.
