Introduction

Ben and Laura were in town for one night. So, we needed to celebrate his birthday with a trip to goosefoot.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2008 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Côte USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
flawed
There was a creaminess to the nose, but it was slightly corked
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. H. Billiot Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
91 points
Nose: Perfumed and balanced nose filled with tones of cherries, roses, warm dough, red fruits, and a touch of citrus.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity. Very well balanced with good and refreshing tones of cherries, roses, red fruits, and some citrus.

Overall: This is a really good NV rose. There is very good balance with great attractive red fruits on both the nose and palate.
White
2010 Jemrose Viognier Egret Pond USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley
91 points
Nose: There is a real fatness to the nose along with gorgeous tones of white florals, lychees, hot oils, white fruits, and some sea spray tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is fatter with bigger and balanced tones of white florals, hot oils, white fruits, sea spray tones, and some vanilla on the back end.

Overall: This is a really good viognier. It has a fatness on both the nose and palate with good depth as well.
Red
1993 Jean-Jacques Confuron Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
92 points
Nose: This takes a little bit to get going, but it then revealed balanced and perfumed tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, brown spices, earth tones, a touch of balsamic, and dark florals.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Very well balanced with silky and layered tones of dark red fruits, brown spices, earth tones, and a touch of balsamic tones on the back end.

Overall: This is a lovely and mature Clos Vougeot. It leaned to the more nuanced side with a real silkiness and layering on both the nose and palate.
Red
1998 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
flawed
This was very disjointed on the palate and very muted on the nose. It was hard to tell what was wrong with it, but something was off.
White
2005 Weingut Knoll Traminer Smaragd Loibner Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
92 points
Nose: There is a real succulent quality to the nose with layered tones of quince, peaches, apricot, star fruits, and with some racy minerals lying underneath.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity and some very good depth. There is a layered and slightly honeyed feel with tones of quince, peaches, apricots, and some real good mineral tones.

Overall: This is drinking really well. There is good depth and layering with real good balance on both the nose and palate.

Closing

Too bad Ben's two wines were flawed, but Goosefoot was great yet again.
