Flight 1 - Bubbles and Whites (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
1985 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon France, Champagne
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Golden color. Nose was full and expressive, with rich/strong baguette note and a faint aroma of oxidized apple. Medium-light bodied on the palate; very richly-flavored, but quite dry; nice freshness, despite moderate oxidation. Very nice.
White
1999 Verget Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Vieilles Vignes des Minots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Brilliant green-gold color. Rich green apple aroma, with notes of banana leaf and flint on the Nose. Medium-light bodied, with good acidity. 13% alc. not noticeable; rich; well-balanced; a bit high-toned; more zest and verve than the average Chardonnay; I like this a lot (and am amazed when it’s revealed as a Chablis, for which it is quite rich).
White
2009 Domaine Jean Monnier & Fils Puligny-Montrachet Les Petites Nosroyes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Very pale green-yellow color. A bit sulphury on the Nose immediately after uncorking, but this ultimately gives way to a clean, fresh and crisp presentation that comes across as lightly powdery. Medium-light bodied. Lots of smoky leather on the palate, with some mineral on the finish, which is short and of medium-light intensity; lean; 13% alc..
White
2007 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Golden yellow color of medium depth. Nose is tangy, with a nice note of freshly-cut grass. Medium-light bodied. This comes across as if it’s relaxing into some age now; sufficient acidity; a touch oaky. Surprised at the reveal to see a wine this young.
White
2002 Jean-Jacques Vincent Pouilly-Fuissé Château de Fuissé France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Golden yellow color of medium-deep depth. Hint of sulphur on the Nose, along with a strong minty note. Tropical/mango flavor on the palate.

Flight 2 - Reds (5 notes)

Red
2000 Domaine Jean Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Slight bricking. Beautiful nose – lovely mix of spice, leather, and lavender – quite open and expressive. Medium-light bodied. Open and giving right now: leather; spice; earthy; soil; a bit funky; 13% alc. not noticeable. Very obviously Burgundy --- a comfortable wine. I enjoyed this.
Red
2002 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Lots of red fruit on the Nose – cherry and strawberry; nose was moderately expressive; hint of glue paste on the Nose, too. Medium bodied. Tannic; sufficient acidity; red currant and cherry fruit flavors – reminds me of Robitussin; 14% alc.; needs time yet.
Red
2002 Louis Jadot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
flawed
TCA.
Red
2008 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
-- decanted for 10 hours before the event --
-- tasted a single pour non-blind --

Nose was deep, bassy, spicy and a bit oaky. Medium bodied. Purple/red fruit on the palate -- moreso purple than red; oaky; a bit big, but the alc. is not noticeable; kind of reminds me of a Carneros or RRV Pinot, but with more acidity and the fruit a bit more tart than what I would normally expect from Carneros or RRV. Others at the table thought it was very good --- a few surmised it was a 1er – one person was guessing Gevrey, specifically, but – to be fair – nobody knew I had thrown a ringer into the lineup. I thought this was very obviously a CA Pinot, albeit a very good one.
Red
1998 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combe aux Moines Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a single pour blind --

Lovely, savory aromatics – celery seed; spirity red fruits; deep cherry; expressive. Medium-light bodied, with flavors of woodsy spice and medicinal red berries; wonderful acidity; 13.5% alc. not noticeable; red-fruited and spicy. Excellent.

Flight 3 - Dessert (2 notes)

White - Fortified
N.V. Rey Fernando de Castilla Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Palo Cortado "Antique" Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
-- popped and poured --
-- tasted a couple pours non-blind --

Very solid Palo Cortado here. Tawny/salinic nose. Medium-full bodied. Strong bite on the palate; pecan flavor; dry.
Red - Fortified
1963 Fonseca Porto Vintage Portugal, Douro, Porto
-- double-decanted before the event --
-- tasted a couple pours blind --

Slight bricking throughout. Nose is very expressive, with tons of mint and of a touch of greenness. Medium-full to full bodied. Very spirity on the palate; loads of mint; pipe tobacco; dry; fruit is fading. Excellent.
