Introduction

This was a nice tasting. A bit chaotic in the organization with expectations poorly managed. super funny as people started complaining that not all wines that were promised were served at the end as they completely lost sight of what great wines actually were served. I just sat in my little corner with a good friend and we enjoyed what we drank.

Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2008 Constantia Glen Five South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
92 points
Turf, leather, forest floor, lots of espresso and vanilla notes, creamy and fairly rich, medium long finish
Red
2000 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
91 points
Tasted double blind. This was surprisingly advanced and it felt more like a 95 or even a 1990. Camomille tea, wine gum, smoked bacon, long but not super long finish. Not impressed, sadly. Hope this was an off bottle.

Red
2010 Diemersdal Private Collection South Africa, Coastal Region, Tygerberg, Durbanville
89 points
A bit restrained, caramel, cassis, nearly chile-like cassis, a bit rough, might turn around, but not excited about this
Red
2008 Clos d'Agon Tinto Spain, Catalunya
91 points
Lots of tanin, a tad lactic, lots of oak but nice with quite some potential.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Château Péby Faugères France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Awesome stuff. Nearly a tad over the top in terms of sweetness in the nose, blackberries and blueberries, insanely intense. creamy super rich and really really long. Need to buy this for my cellar!!
Red
2007 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri
93 points
What a stunner, served blind and really really liked it. This has a great qpr! Chestnut purée, chocolate, dense and surprisingly fat yet retaining a certain elegance.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

Red
2009 Eagles' Nest Shiraz South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
88 points
A tad restrained, very light style of Shiraz, cranberry and slight farmhouse smell. This has that biodynamic touch, even though I don't know if this is farmed biodynamically. Not my wine as it lacks a bit concentration to my taste
Red
2002 Bodega Noemia de Patagonia Malbec Argentina, Patagonia, Río Negro
89 points
A sweetness that feels slightly artificially added, herbal tea, watercress which could be what I usually get as dried hay from older malbecs. Medium length but a tad disjointed
Red
2010 Haskell Syrah Pillars South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
94 points
Lots of oak, wherters pastilles, roasted bread, espresso and a massive finish, well done!

Flight 4 (3 notes)

Red
2001 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Tasted single blind in a series of 18 wines, now way to tell this was the Petrus. Chewing gum, banana a bit of oak whichis very well integrated. Nice length and a beautiful elegance.
Red
2009 Vilafonté Series C South Africa, Coastal Region, Paarl
93 points
Banana, nice restrained oak and roast aromas, very elegant!
Red
2010 De Toren Fusion V South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
90 points
Blackberries, a hint of green bell peppers indicating not fully ripe cabernet other than that it has a nice sweetness and a typicial south africa espresso note. Good but not great

Flight 5 (3 notes)

Red
1999 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
93 points
This was a clear Vega Sicila,as I had tasted some of them quite a lot recently and initially mistaken them often for mature bordeaux, but the hightened acidity and autumnal sweetness gave it away this time.
Red
1999 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
86 points
While there is a signature mouton graphite perfume, this has massive brett. Smells literally a bit like cow shit some other great bordeaux notes in there as well but you know, nothing mixes really well with cow shit if you are honest. Tasted blind and thought that it was a nice little 30 bucks bordeaux...
Red
2005 Clos Mogador Priorat Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
92 points
A hint of burnt rubber, figs, lots of dried figs actually with a hint if chamomile. Pretty good and true to its terroir.

Flight 6 (3 notes)

Red
2010 4G Wines G. 2012 L'Aube de la Vigne South Africa, Western Cape
92 points
Beef seasoning, blackberries. Very elegant with a nice touch of oak.
Red
2010 Glenelly Estate Lady May South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
91 points
Lots of tobacco, cedar wood, touch of firewood with a lot of oak. Nice
Red
1990 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Turkey drippings, sunday roast, really long and beautiful great end to a nice tasting
