Chicago Wine Flock..."Wines that Bill B Loves"

goosefoot - Chicago IL

Tasted February 6, 2014 by Burgundy Al with 526 views

Introduction

Sensational smaller "Wine Flock" dinner at goosefoot. Great food worked amazingly with these wines, served in flights of 2 wines each, with the overall theme nothing more than wines that Bill Bucklew really likes, thought we'd like, and so he wanted to share. Thanks, Bill!

Flight 1 (11 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
90 points
Served blind. Seemed obvious from Champagne, slightly mature, and seemingly from a producer with a bready house style. Lots of apple and some lemon with modest intensity.
White
2005 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
Served double blind. Seemed clearly from Burgundy, with lots of energy and brightness. I thought Chablis 2007 Grand Cru, so was very impressed when this was unveiled. Lots of lemon throughout with racy acidity and very good density.
White
1985 Joseph Drouhin Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
86 points
Served double blind. Clearly seemed to be old Burgundy. Lots of very mature and ripe fruit with good intensity. Still enjoyable, even if slightly long in the tooth.
White
2010 Edmond Vatan Sancerre Clos la Néore France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre
93 points
Served double blind, but easily identified as Loire Sauv Blanc because of a slip-up in the prior blind flint. Very powerful with great, fresh lemon and lime (fruit and zest) with chiseled minerality. Impressed with the layers and nuance already coming through so young.

White
2010 Yves Boyer-Martenot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
90 points
Tasted double blind. Seemed very Burgundy, but to me 5+ years older than a 2010. Fat and forward orchard and stone fruit, very easy to enjoy, but not seemingly very Meursault to me tonight. More fun than interesting.
Red
1993 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champs-Chenys France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Served double blind. Meaty and powerful mature black fruit that came across more ripe than I expect from 1993s. Good balance of red and black fruit with mushroom character and very appealing spice. Moderate length. Very impressive Villages wine. I thought it 1989 Grand or 1er Cru.
Red
1969 Domaine Jean Gros Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
94 points
Served double blind. Everybody was immediately focused on this glass in the flight, with its sensational mature fruit and equally charming spice. Incredible freshness as well. Several of us thought this top notch 1985! Elegance personified with sensational textures and balance.
Red
2000 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Served double blind. Basically popped and poured. Amazing accessible and friendly. Blackberry and plum with everything well integrated and charming spice throughout. Clearly lots of tannin, but so elegant and fine, no harsh elements anywhere. Nobody was surprised this was Bordeaux, but everybody was surprised by 2000.
Red
1986 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
90 points
Served double blind. Earthy, but lots and lots of powerful black fruit, showing just subtle spice. Firm but with fruit that isn't about to fade away. Maybe it was just late in the evening, maybe it was the pairing with a wine obviously Bordeaux, but this was difficult for most of us to figure out.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Alois Kracher Chardonnay TBA #9 Nouvelle Vague Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
90 points
Tasted double blind. Came across as rather extreme, with an ultra lush and ripe character that made me think this was New World. Very impressive depth of flavors, but this just came across as top heavy and slightly off kilter. Once unveiled, it confirmed my historical preference for Kracher TBAs that weren't at the extreme high end of the numbering scheme.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K The Noble Man USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
92 points
Tasted double blind. Lots of dried apricot with impressive concentration. Botrytis is not particularly dominant here, but everything work together in good balance and a textural lightness that can be very enjoyable in sweet wines.
