Introduction

This was a small "non-celebration" to mark the last night of a certain age leading to a birthday that is of "no particular significance". We had a marvelous time with some great food and wine!

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Gaston Chiquet Champagne Premier Cru Tradition Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
92 points
Pale gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. This was the best bottle to date, really showing well. Nose is expressive and bright with florals, minerals, pear, and a touch of strawberry. The palate is suave, nice yeast and minerals, just a little impression of sweetness to the fruit, pear, subtle citrus, medium plus finish with just a touch of chalk at the end. At $40ish this Grower really shines. 92+pts.
White
2008 Shafer Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
93 points
Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour plus. Outstanding bottle. Nose is powerful, lemon, butter, toast, earth, minerality. The palate wow's from the start, lemon, melon, round and viscous, full bodied but not at all heavy, tangy with some citrus zest and minerality, medium plus finish. Reminded me of a fine Puligny-Montrachet. Seemingly at its zenith, yet showing no indications of a decline at present. I would be comfortable holding this another year or two. 93+ to 94pts.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Château Doisy-Védrines France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
93 points
Light-medium gold color. Coravined into glasses. Drank a 2 oz pour with Jan's seared foie gras and pears two ways. Nose is spicy, plenty of botrytis, nectarines, light honey, orange marmalade, very floral. The palate is balanced, lively, young, nectarine, citrus, nice acid, vigorous and intense on the palate. Drinking well already. 93pts currently and should gain a point or two with time. 93(+)pts.

Red
2009 Sojourn Pinot Noir Rodgers Creek Vineyard Sonoma Coast USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
93 points
Dark red color. PNP and aerated into glasses. Nose has big ripe fruits, cherry, raspberry, strawberry, briary. The palate is velvety with nice round tannins, ripe berry and cherry fruit, spicy, briar. Medium plus finish and well balanced. This is all about the fruit, but it adds in some nice spiciness and underbrush character. 92+ to 93pts.
Red
2006 Greenock Creek Shiraz Apricot Block Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
90 points
Purple color. Decanted for an hour. Drank 1 glass over an hour paired with some wonderful bbq baby back ribs and drank again 2/15/14. The nose has the requisite minty quality, blackberry liqueur, blueberry liqueur, dark chocolate, spice, oak and tar. The palate is full bodied, lots of glycerin, viscous, blackberry liqueur, blueberry liqueur, pepper, spices, dark chocolate, that follows into a black and blue fruit stained finish clouded by some oak and alcohol. There is much to like here and it was much better 48 hours later, as the alcohol had toned down significantly as had the oak. This drinks like port, and at 18.5% it's pretty close. Score is from 2/15/14 tasting. Will settle with some air time, but I don't think this will get better. Drink now.
White - Off-dry
2007 Joh. Jos. Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
Light gold color. PNP from 375ml, drank a 2oz pour with dessert. I can't believe its been two years sine we had this. Very aromatic and floral on the nose, vanilla, citrus, pineapple, lime, mineral. The palate is lively and tart, passion fruit, pineapple, lime, citrus, nice balance of sweet and acid. Tasty.
