Introduction

Eight of us gathered at a new promising Mpls restaurant called Heyday. Many of the crew there are alumni of La Belle Vie. The event centered around CDP with a nice mix of whites as well.

Flight 1 - Whites and Champagnes (6 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Forget-Brimont Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
91 points
Pale pink color. Drank 1+ glass over 30 minutes. 2.5yrs bottle age in the cellar. Nicely yeasty on the nose with cherry and berries, good minerality as well. The palate is perfectly consistent, fresh, nice fruit, clean with a medium finish. I would look to purchase again. 91+pts.
White
2010 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
89 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Fairly bright and fruity on the nose, grapefruit dominant. The palate is tart, grapefruit dominant, citrus, medium finish. This was very good, especially at the price point. Not quite as polished as the previous bottle.
White
2010 Château Simone Palette Blanc France, Provence, Palette
88 points
Light gold color. Followed 1 glass over 40 minutes. Mildly oily, waxy, herbs, citrus, acidic, sharp finish. Others seemed to enjoy more than me. 87-88pts.
White
2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 2 hours. This was slow to open and continued to evolve over the evening becoming increasingly more appealing and complex. The nose brings lanolin, earth, nuts, spice, marzipan, honey. The palate has honey, mineral spirits, big and full bodied, marzipan, minerals, and a long finish. Very good, but still has a long way to evolve, I'd give this several years; 93(+)pts.
White - Sparkling
1996 R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Saint-Vincent France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
94 points
Medium gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 30 minutes. This was delightfully good stuff. Loved the nose; earthy, nutty, toasted, apple, mineral - very Dom-like. The palate is full bodied and intense, nice mousse, creamy, lots of crisp minerality, earthy, nutty, citrus, orchard fruit, and long complex finish. This was in great shape and absolutely beautiful to drink.

Flight 2 - CDP's (10 notes)

Red
1998 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Very dark red color. Double decanted about 3 hours before the event. This was quite big, lots of cherry fruit, herb de provenance, kirsch on the nose. The palate was a bit green, herbs, lots of kirsch and spice, black cherry, cassis, full bodied. Lacks some finesse, but solid.
Red
2001 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Very dark red color. Double decanted 3 hours prior. Drank 1+ glass over 2 hours plus. Wow, this really blows up in the glass, great nose with a wonderful leathery, floral perfume with garrigue, kirsch and dark fruits. The palate is big and full bodied, but stays fresh and pure, deep black fruits, black cherry, spicy, deeply earthy with mushroom overtones and a long finish. loved it, outstanding, 94+pts to 95pts.

2005 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Seemed a bit muted on the nose tonight, opens more over an hour, dried herbs, ripe berry, currants, intense and big on the palate.

2006 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
Dark red color. Drank 1 glass over 70 minutes. This was the best bottle to date, lovely savory roasted meat qualities, lots of spice, but not over the top, dry herbs, floral, good balance, black and red fruits, very promising. 92+ to 93pts.

2007 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Very dark red color. PNP, with 1-2hr slow-o. Followed 1 glass over 60 minutes. This just struck me as too young and still in need of time to settle down. Big body and concentrated black fruits, very spicy, oak, licorice, alcohol, blackberry, black cherry. This is a very big spicy wine. Will have to see where this goes. 90(+?)pts.

2004 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Very dark red color. Checked prior and recorked; then slow ox for about 1.5hrs at the event. This was simply beautiful on pulling the cork. I hadn't had this in 4 years and it is even better than I remember. Beautifully floral nose with violets, perfumed, garrigue, meaty, very earthy, bright berries. The palate is full bodied, elegant, intense, garrigue, bright fruit, black cherry, black raspberry, spices, dry forest floor, leather. This just has a great blend of spice, fruit, and earth. All in perfect balance with a 90+ second finish. 95+pts.

2004 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Secret des Sabon France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very dark red color. PNP, followed one glass over 1 hour plus. This was definitely the most disappointing of the group. I certainly was expecting more given the reviews and CT notes. But this was a disjointed mess of a wine tonight, alcohol on the nose and palate, oaky, very spicy. Not something I could drink on this evening. No score, impression mid-80's.
Red
2005 Domaine Roger Perrin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve des Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Dark red color. PNP I think. Drank 1 glass over 60 minutes. Didn't take a lot of notes on this. Full body, big, licorice, very spicy, dark red fruits, somewhat hot on the palate.
Red
2006 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Dark red color. Same bottle as Chablis28's note. Double decanted and recorked. I love Charvin;, elegant wines that always seem to impress. This too was impressive, floral, leather, garrigue, berries. The palate is also elegant, forest floor, berry, lovely mixed spices, garrigue, nice balance and silky tannins. Should improve and have a long life. 93+pts.

2008 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Medium dark red color. PNP, Drank 1 glass voer 60 minutes. Lots of very barnyardy brett initially that later evens out fairly nicely, savory, roast meat, red fruits, . The palate is consistent, spicy, a fair bit of heat, intense and long finish. Not as good as the last 2 bottles. 90+pts.

Overall the food was well executed and very tasty. The wines provided a fine mix of styles.
CDP highlights were the 2004 Clos des Papes, the 2001 Le Vieux Donjon, and the 2006 Charvin and Le Vieux Donjon.
The whites of note were the 1996 Legras BdB Champagne and the 2005 Chave Hermitage.
